Mike Trout wants to stay. A trade “hasn’t even crossed my mind.” Instead, he seems hellbent on not only proving he’s still elite, but that he can do what few believe he can:
Lead the Shohei Ohtani-less Angels into the playoffs.
“He’s just mad.”
Elly De La Cruz touching Shohei Ohtani to see if he’s real and Ohtani giving him crap for where he hit a ball with an off-balance swing.

"He gets overshadowed by Kobe a little bit, but he was his own Kobe of the junior college baseball world." ...
With Yoongi in the stands, Hyun-Jin Ryu threw a Maddux, shutting out the Braves through nine innings on only 93 pitches. For the season: 2.03 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 22.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Padres gave away a dog calendar for today’s game. Every month features a picture with a player and his dogs — except August. Juan Soto, who has pet allergies, instead went to a nearby pet store and took his in front of a fish tank.
11:45 am: Angels announce Mike Trout fractured the hamate bone in his left hand.
4:40 pm: Anthony Rendon fouls a ball off his leg and leaves the game.

Six innings of one-run ball, with 12 strikeouts, against the Astros tonight. And a huge two-out, two-run triple.
It is continually unreal.
Sandra Scully, the wife of Vin Scully, passed away on Sunday night due to complications from a long bout with ALS, the Dodgers announced. She was 76. She had 6 kids, 21 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The Dodgers provided this photo ...
Source: Shohei Ohtani has not made a decision yet.
That’s not to say it won’t ultimately be the Blue Jays; my understanding is that, at this point, that decision has not been made.
The death of Tyler Skaggs has taken my breath away. One of the coolest, nicest, most down-to-Earth people you could ever meet; someone who was really starting to come into his own, too. Devastated for his family, especially his wife and his mom.
Feel for Jared Goff. One minute you’re young, rich, good looking, with a smart coach and a cool stadium on a good team in a great city, the world in the palm of your hands. The next, you’re off to Detroit.
How Tyler Skaggs was honored today: His teammates all wore his jersey, his mother threw a strike to his best friend for the ceremonial first pitch, then the Angels scored 7 first-inning runs and pitched a combined no-hitter, from Taylor Cole and, for the final 7, Felix Peña.
Shohei Ohtani was asked which All-Star impressed him the most.
His answer: Mookie Betts.
"He's so versatile; he can play the outfield, play the middle infield. He's very, very talented."
An amazing nugget by ESPN Stats & Info: Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer have put together back-to-back postseason starts of five no-hit innings. The only other time that ever happened was Games 1 and 2 of the 2013 ALCS ... with Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer.
Shohei Ohtani's top of the first: Retired all three batters he faced, two on strikeouts.
Shohei Ohtani's bottom of the first: Home run, his major league-leading 27th this season and his 12th this month.
Joe Musgrove bought a Polaroid camera, started a unique dugout celebration and sprouted a massive mural. Some day it’ll make for a good coffee-table book — but it isn’t finished.
The Padres’ season, told through their favorite photos:
The A's announced that fans can pay to have their cutouts at home games this season, with prices ranging from $49 to $129. The most expensive gets you a baseball if a foul ball hits your cutout. Proceeds go to local charities.
The AL Rookie of the Year field will include Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt Jr., Spencer Torkelson, Adley Rutschman, Shane Baz, eventually Riley Greene, among others.
The amount of young talent in this sport is mesmerizing.
On Altuve not wanting jersey ripped: “I don’t know what human hits a walk-off HR against Aroldis Chapman to send your team to the WS,” Bellinger said, “and 1, has the thought to say, ‘Don’t rip my jersey off.’ But 2, go into the tunnel, change your shirt, and then come out ...”

This clears two 40-man-roster spots to make room for Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly.
The Padres win, 5-3. They won three straight NLDS games, the last one in epic, come-from-behind fashion, and have slayed the dragon up the freeway. They’ll have home-field advantage in the unlikeliest of CS matchups vs the Phillies. The Dodgers and their 111-win season are done.
As a Dodger, Shohei Ohtani will make $20M from 2024 to 2033 and $680M from 2034 to 2043. He is deferring more than 97% of his historic contract, made easier by the fact he makes close to $50M annually in off-the-field revenue.

Shohei Ohtani sent one 443 feet … to the opposite field … to extend his team’s lead against the first-place Rangers … on a night when he pitched … for his sixth home run in a stretch of seven games.
The Rams hired a 30-year-old head coach. They traded 7 first-round picks. They took chances on the likes of Suh, Peters, Beckham. They replaced their franchise quarterback. And now they’ll play in a Super Bowl that they will host. Pretty cool to see boldness rewarded like that.
Clayton Kershaw is through six perfect innings on 69 pitches in his season debut from Minnesota, with 12 strikeouts. His fastball is averaging nearly 92 mph, and he has induced whiffs on 16 of the 23 sliders that have been swung at. Amazing.
Shohei Ohtani has been voted an All-Star as a hitter and a pitcher for the third straight year.
I’ll have to check my research, but I think he’s the first six-time All-Star in a three-year stretch.

Mike Trout noted that the Angels scored 7 first-inning runs and finished with 13. Tyler Skaggs' birthday is 7/13, tomorrow. "You can't make this stuff up," Trout said.

Gabriel Moreno lofted a fly ball to right that was initially called a home run then ruled foul after a crew-chief review. On the very next pitch, he homered to left-center field -- and flipped his bat like 20 feet into the sky.
4 home runs in 6 batters -- and Lance Lynn is out.
Diamond Sports Group had until the end of today to pay the Padres their scheduled rights fee and has decided not to do so. Tonight will mark the final Padres game that airs on Bally Sports. Moving forward, MLB is expected to take control of broadcasts.

Yu Darvish stole Anthony Rizzo's walk-up music when he came to bat in his first start against the Cubs today. It was his way to honor him.

Just said this on SportsCenter: Shohei Ohtani will be with the Angels in New York, and it looks like he’ll continue to hit while he decides the next course of action with his UCL tear.
Feel like this needs to be said today: Mike Trout takes more time to sign for kids and pose for selfies with them than practically any baseball player I've covered. Most of those interactions are not captured on video, or at least they're not shared. But they happen constantly.
People: I can report that every Angels player will walk up to Nickleback tonight. The coaches decided it as a way to shake things up. So, if the Angels snap their losing streak tonight, you can thank Nickleback.
Ronald Acuña Jr. approached us today leaning on his bat as if it were a cane and then cracked a big smile and started walking normally. He feels fine and wishes he could play today.
Shohei Ohtani will not pitch in the Angels’ season finale against the Mariners on Sunday, Joe Maddon said today. He will continue to hit this week, but his season is over as a pitcher.
The final line: 9-2, 3.18 ERA, 156 SO, 44 BB, 130 1/3 IP.
Ronald Acuña Jr. planned to get married in the offseason. But his fiancée’s visa was set to expire, keeping her and the kids away for 3 months. He wanted them here for the stretch run. An LA wedding was arranged in 24 hours.
Then Acuña made history.
MLB announced that “earlier today” their department of investigations “began their formal process investigating the matter” involving Shohei Ohtani and Ippei Mizuhari.
The Lebron-versus-Jordan debate, and any other like it, should only be about comparing resumes. To not believe LeBron James is better at basketball than Michael Jordan is to basically not believe in human evolution.
The Angels announced that Shohei Ohtani has been placed on the injured list with his oblique injury and won’t play any more this season.
We expect to get more on him from the ballpark today.
After Mike Trout homered off Jacob deGrom at the All-Star Game, Bryce Harper was asked, from the outfield, whether Trout should be considered the best player in the game. "If you don't," Harper said, "then you're not watching."
Ippei Mizuhara surrendered to law enforcement this morning and is in federal custody. He is scheduled to appear in L.A. court at 1 p.m. PT. The expectation, according to what I was told yesterday, is that he will be let out on bond at that point.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team met with Shohei Ohtani in Los Angeles a couple days ago for two to three hours.
“Clearly,” he said, “Shohei’s our top priority.”
Shohei Ohtani said he is “very confident” he’ll be DH’ing for the Dodgers when they open their season in South Korea. He said he’s right on scheduling on the hitting side and will start hitting velocity when he reports to Arizona.
