two weeks ago, i published an investigation into allegations of mismanagement and misrepresentation at Life House, a hospitality startup that raised $100M+ in venture capital to reinvent the hotel industry
today, the CEO resigned
bob iger just sent a company wide email telling all disney employees they have till 5pm tomorrow to decide if theyre ready to go ‘mad for the mouse’ or take severance
never not thinking about that time the menswear guy got called out for dunking on some right wing grifter’s suit, only to uno reverse it and reveal he actually called the dude’s tailor

i seriously need to know what was going through the daily harvest social team's mind when they decided that the best way to make their FOOD POISONING recall announcement was via an ~aesthetic~ overhead shot of the bad food w/ a vague caption directing followers to a link in bio!!
uhh so there's a small group of twitter users that keep getting logged out of twitter for desktop and when they log back in the only thing they can see is this tweet (not a joke)
with the vice rumors sending a new batch of journalists scrambling to archive more than a decade's worth of work, i've been thinking a lot about link rot and the insidious ephemerality of digital media
the internet is forever, except when it’s not, and that's kind of terrifying
after ~2 years
@WIRED

(who reported on the meeting!) for more. while musk's gizmo comments did not make it into the final draft she did give me permission to share this quote with the people bc she understands that democracy dies in darkness
in an apparent attempt to copy the popular app BeReal, Instagram is rolling out its own feature (called ‘Dual’) to take disappearing photos using the front and back cameras simultaneously
left is IG stories, right is BeReal
prediction: AI will displace the quiet beauty of the first nice day of spring, the ecstasy of knowing others and being known, the thrill of a perfectly timed joke, and the wonder of little quotidian discoveries
Prediction: AI will displace social drinking within 5 years
Just as alcohol is a social disinhibitor, like the Steve Martin movie Roxanne, people will use AI powered earbuds to help them socialize. At first we'll view it as creepy, but it will quickly become superior to alcohol
some personal news: i’m joining the phenomenal team of scoop machines

3 years ago today, 30+ journalists published a coordinated series of articles about Facebook's "war room" for election interference. To get inside it, outlets had to agree to FB's conditions & schedule
FB shuttered the war room a few weeks later once it'd gotten press coverage
Right now 30+ journalists are finishing up a coordinated series of articles based on thousands of pages of leaked documents. We hear that to get the docs, outlets had to agree to the conditions and a schedule laid down by the PR team that worked on earlier leaked docs.
I spent the last 2mo talking to 20+ employees at the tech unicorn Patreon. They described a mission-driven startup crumbling under the leadership of YouTuber turned CEO Jack Conte
There's 6-figure discrimination settlements, sketchy stock sales & more:
screaming, crying and throwing up bc ive been asked to pay $1 to read an investigation that took 8 months of labor from a team of journalists, fact checkers, editors, and lawyers
why yes, i did purchase a hoodie that tricks automated license plate readers into injecting junk data into their systems specifically to make the surveillance state less effective, it’s called (adversarial) fashion baby!!
absolutely obsessed with this person who is charging $1900 for a 1 bedroom apartment in Inwood where the renter is expected to vacate the apt during the workweek so the owner can wfh IN the bedroom from 9-5 monday to friday
@tomgara
i thought it was a fun movie! a modern version of the door slamming farce, in the style of agatha christie. i think people who praise it as The Best Movie are being OTT, but i really enjoyed watching a fun romp with campy jokes and outlandish Capital-C Characters
people aren’t “fleeing” NYC. i personally have been challenging each and every new yorker to hand to hand combat and the losers (rightfully) understand they are no longer welcome around these parts
it is cheaper because it is being manufactured by imprisoned people who are being forced to make goods by a company that routinely pays them 65 cents an hour for their labor. absolutely horrifying.
@thelauralewis
there are multiple airbnb listings online for this complex and a stream of people with suitcases coming in and out of the building regularly
as the summer marches on, there are a few simple things that everyone can do to stay motivated and connected to the present moment:
take a long walk without your phone. try cooking something new. leak something to a reporter
the first ever webcam was put online by the university of cambridge in 1993. it was pointed at coffee pot in a room near the computer lab so workers could check how much coffee was left
The news today that the death of Bob Lee wasn't a random act of violence — he was allegedly killed by a fellow tech exec who he knew — should be a wakeup call to all the newsrooms that baselessly amplified claims tying his death to the homelessness crisis
i wrote about this a little bit back in 2018 for another now-nonexistent digital media outlet
though our digital lives may feel hauntingly permanent, as the years go on, these records that many of us take for granted become harder and harder to pin down
the biggest US mask manufacturer gets 200+ calls & emails a day from desperate hospitals, fearful elderly people & parents of immunocompromised kids, & wannabe price gougers
it used to make 250K masks a day. now it makes 1M
it still turns down 100M+/day
even “paid” internships box out lower income students. $10-$15/hr, capped at 30 hours a week, with no stipend for housing or food is non viable in NYC or SF
only students with a significant safety net or already established housing can afford to intern at most major outlets
Ever wondered why newsrooms/mainstream media outlets are disproportionately white? Especially when it comes to leadership?
The unpaid internship.
They could afford to live in NYC for a summer w/o pay; they then had the necessary experience/contacts to stay & rise the ranks
for a month at wired (back in the Before Times) my colleagues graciously looked the other way while i constructed a 7 foot tall murder board in the middle of the office...
today, i published the insane story that the board led me to:
medium is pivoting to what appears to be a substack like model, leaving the future of its pubs up in the air.
every editorial staffer is being offered voluntary buy outs.
in may 2021 i published an investigation into the deadly toll of amazon's trucking boom, today, a year+ LATER, the WSJ published a report on the very same topic, featuring the same crash and similar statistics and methods — not a single reference to the reporting that came before
amazon has spent the last 5 years quietly muscling its way into the trucking industry. it doesn't just want to carry its own goods, but everyone else's too
the goal is to become a top five freight brokerage, and it's already well on its way.
my latest:
i can tell i have a brain disease because i immediately recognized this couple as the ones from that iconic 2019 era 10k word BuzzFeed story, The Time I Went On A Lesbian Cruise And It Blew Up My Entire Life
New: Amazon is expanding a program to turn some of the most routine aspects of warehouse work into a video game
Workers in at least 20 US states can earn virtual currency by working quickly & "raise" pets in a Tamagotchi-like arcade game called Tamazilla
tech companies that have long relied on ukraine as a source of cheap and reliable talent are now racing to evacuate workers
uber suspended services in cities across ukraine & is providing employees with funds to flee the country. lyft and others are too
please hire me to report for you so i can tell you (and your readers!!) the story behind this 8 ft tall board of incriminating documents + the map i made + the knee high stack of [redacted] company’s files i obtained . it’s an absolute doozy i promise
today i bring you a tale from the land of ZIRP. how MasterClass raised $335M during the pandemic and still ended up overwhelmed by expenses
featuring: a $100K replica of bob iger's office, private quarantine jets to iceland & a 70 person film crew for BBQ
