BREAKING
After just 24 hours, the government has dropped its commitment to reopen the Leamside Line. It was included yesterday in the initial Network North announcements, now it’s gone.
Roads minister Richard Holden tells me Govt is now just ‘committed to looking into it’.
Full details of this to follow
@ChronicleLive
later, but here is what a social distancing Grey Street is going to look like. Parking spaces removed to create cycle lane, extra pavement space for walking and for cafes and other businesses. Traffic southbound only.

Okay, I'm done. Thank you so much if you've been following my coverage in Newcastle yesterday and of the North East mayor election today (and the whole campaign!) here and on
@ChronicleLive
- hope it's been helpful!
Now, time to have a beer and go to bed.
Labour sources have suggested their seats lost in the North East to the Tories tonight could be Bishop Auckland, Blyth Valley, Sedgefield, Sunderland Central, NW Durham, Stockton South, Hartlepool, Darlington.
#GE2019
So… the web page with this list of Network North projects in the North East appears to have vanished. And there is no mention of the explicit commitment to reopen the Leamside Line in the government’s 40-page policy document.
Good to catch up with everyone at the
#LDReporter
conference at Media City today. Very humbled to come away with this for my constant banging on about Tyneside’s clean air crisis - cheers to everyone who read and took notice... there’s still loads more to come on that!
*Breaking*
Go North East bus workers have voted to end their strike.
Unite confirms that its members have accepted a new pay offer, after 5 consecutive weeks of industrial action (7 total in the last 2 months).
Normal bus service will resume tomorrow.
Massive news in the North East mayor race. Labour longlist of candidates for their candidate selection contest has come out - and
@MayorJD
Jamie Driscoll is not on it.
Three names: Kim McGuinness, ex-MEP Paul Brannen, and Newcastle councillor Nicu Ion.
Very cool morning getting inside the Tyne Bridge scaffolding for a look at just how rusted a state it is in.
Restoration work starts in earnest on April 2 and will mean bridge going down to one lane in each direction.
The race has long been seen as Jamie Driscoll vs Kim McGuinness. He is described as the last Corbynista in power, she is very much alligned with Keir Starmer.
Stunning development to see him, as a sitting metro mayor, excluded from party's longlist for current selection race.
My LDR colleague
@BillEdgarnews
reports these totals from Durham:
Paul Donaghy (REF) - 9,679
Jamie Driscoll (IND) - 25,074
Andrew Gray (G) - 2,396
Aidan King (LD) - 3,907
Kim McGuinness (LAB) - 43,084
Guy Renner-Thompson (CON) - 11,627
Here we go then. Three hours of sleep later, I’ve made it to Sunderland for the North East mayor election count and declaration.
This is a historic day for our region.
All updates here
@ChronicleLive
It's been quite a day. More reaction here to the Leamside Line U-turn.
@SharonHodgsonMP
says it shows "the total contempt this Government has for the North East".
It’s official. The North East’s multi-billion pound devolution deal is done, the legislation has passed through Parliament.
Mayor to be elected on May 2 to head a new North East Mayoral Combined Authority covering Northumberland, Durham, and Tyne and Wear.
Just awaiting the final confirmation now, but everyone here knows Kim McGuinness has won the race to be North East mayor.
Spoke to Jamie Driscoll, who says he has come a strong second and is already talking about running again for this job in 4 years' time.
Takeover confirmed.
Yes, Pam Smith will take over as chief executive of Newcastle City Council in January.
That's the big news everyone was waiting for, right?
Sorry.
So good to spend some time chatting to the lovely people in the
@graingermarket1
this morning.
Feels like a totally different place with light shining through the roof again and vibe among traders is most positive I've heard in years.
More on
@ChronicleLive
over Easter weekend
Massive news here - Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes faces being axed. He lost a selection battle in his Arthur’s Hill ward tonight, so won’t be able to stand for re-election in May unless he finds a new seat.
Numbers from SUNDERLAND:
Paul Donaghy (REF) – 11,563
Jamie Driscoll (IND) – 11,009
Andrew Gray (G) – 1,801
Aidan King (LD) – 4,727
Kim McGuinness (LAB) – 27,469
Guy Renner-Thompson (CON) – 7,037
Huge for Reform, beating Jamie into second on Wearside.
The news that we’ve been waiting for… £35m finally being handed over by the Government for Tyne Bridge restoration.
After an increasingly bitter public feud between local councils and DfT over who’s to blame for the delay, this really is a relief.
Big news in Jesmond this morning.
Low Traffic Neighbourhood being axed, bollards will be taken out next Monday.
Council says LTN achieved many of its aims, but 'clear' that it did not work for everyone.
Not back in the office yet and sitting in (socially distanced) in-person council meetings still feels a bit weird, but coming to work in Newcastle city centre again on days like this is just great. Even for us gingers with a crippling fear of going outside in the sun...
Here's the detail on Grey St/city centre changes (as much as we currently have anyway). Judging by my timeline today, this is probably the most popular thing
@NewcastleCC
has ever done!
Worth briefly interrupting my Christmas holiday to write this up… At long last, the North East has a new devolution deal agreed.
Deal worth £4.2bn, new mayor to be elected in 2024, covers all of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and County Durham.
"This is going backwards, it is life in Gateshead being harder than it was when I was growing up."
Big thanks to
@DavidOlusoga
for speaking to us about his memories of Gateshead Leisure Centre after it was closed down.
@Save_Leisure_GD
Right, that's it from me. Off for some much-needed sleep. Thanks for following my election ramblings since last night, hope they were coherent!
Still plenty more to come over the weekend from my colleagues
@ChronicleLive
.
And so this sorry saga over the Tyne Bridge restoration funding continues.
DfT claims it could not start fully assessing the project until last month.
That has NOT gone down well with local leaders.
Remember, this money was pledged in June 2022.
Here’s my favourite moment of today so far…
A Lib Dem source tells me that one of the votes for Aidan King was a drawing of someone urinating on a windfarm. That is some creative effort in the voting booth.
James calls the hustings a “total farce”. He says Truss and Sunak are trying to outdo each other with “outrageous” policies instead of addressing the cost of living crisis.
Oooooft - Rail plan says London to Leeds will take 113 minutes under revised plans - 32 minutes longer than it would have done if the city had got HS2.
Great to have the North East mayor candidates in the
@ChronicleLive
offices this afternoon for our election debate, hosted by
@RobParsonsNorth
.
It will be released as a
@NorthernAgenda_
podcast over the weekend and I'll be doing a write-up summarising the highlights as well.
Incredibly brave and deeply moving speech from Cllr Jason Smith at
@NewcastleCC
this evening, announcing that he is suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Half of people diagnosed die within 3 months and one-year survival rate in the North East is just over 25%. Utterly tragic.
In an emotional address to council Cllr Jason Smith of Lemington ward reveals he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Despite this Cllr Smith says he has been blessed to spend time with his family and is "fighting for every day".
BREAKING:

Unanimous vote, 11-0.
Not a bad way of getting some steps in on your lunch break! Also saw a seagull pick up a full Greggs pasty off the ground, so a great time was had by all 👍
Labour spokesperson tells me: "The Labour Party holds its candidates to a very high standard. During this process, some applicants did not meet the threshold required to proceed to the longlist stage. We do not comment on individual applications."
Castle ward by-election RESULT:
Thom Campion (Lib Dems) - 1306
Andrew Herridge (Labour) - 773
Brian Moore (North East Party) - 89
Andrew Thorp (Green) - 250
John Watts (Conservative) - 657

My other main first impression - air con, sweet, sweet air con! Shame we won’t have one of these running by this summer (target date is now ‘by the end of the year’ for first new train to enter service…)
In position at Sport Central in Newcastle for tonight's local election count - and the start of a big 24 hours that takes me to Sunderland for the North East mayor count in the morning.

Louise tells me she has seen ‘no evidence’ of Levelling Up in the North East and thinks things are instead getting ‘much, much worse’, particularly worried about today’s latest predictions on energy bill price rises.
Had this in from NEWCASTLE:
Paul Donaghy (REF) – 3,653
Jamie Driscoll (IND) – 25,018
Andrew Gray (G) – 3,671
Aidan King (LD) –6,778
Kim McGuinness (LAB) – 26,429
Guy Renner-Thompson (CON) – 5,012
Closest result between Kim and Jamie that we've seen.
Newcastle's Levelling Up bids to build a new West Denton pool/leisure centre and to restore the Grainger Market and Old Eldon Square have been approved
THE NORTH EAST MAYOR ELECTION AND WHO’S IN THE RUNNING:
A thread that I hope is helpful (and even fun!) for people, especially voters who aren’t super-engaged with this very important thing…
⬇️⬇️⬇️
Big news of a potential breakthrough in the Go North East bus strike.
Unite has confirmed to me that it received a new offer from the company in today's negotiations and will put that to members in a new ballot this week.
Workers are in the 5th week of a continuous strike.
Asked
@NewcastleCC
today if they will follow some other councils in providing free meal vouchers during half-term.
@NewcastleLibDem
now calling for it to happen - "If it can find the money for big pay rises, it ought to put its money where the mouths are on child food poverty."
This was Jesmond this morning as
@NewcastleCC
ripped out the Low Traffic Neighbourhood bollards. As has been the case for the last year, local opinion very polarised.
Intriguing to see what comes next.
30% of the vote in Byker went to
@TheGreenParty
, doubling our voteshare from 2022.
A strong second. It’s clear that more and more people are turning to
@NCLGreenParty
to represent their communities.
Thank you to everyone who supported us and congratulations to Hayder Qureshi.
It's a really big election day tomorrow in the North East and one that will have huge implications for our region.
The North East mayor is a super important thing - so, please, go out and vote on Thursday and have your say on our future.
Just spoke to Jamie Driscoll.
Not giving much away in terms of what he expects today. He’s annoyed at lack of national attention on the North East mayor race.
The next motion, from Lib Dem Wendy Taylor, calls on the council to end its twin city relationship with Taiyuan in China, over the treatment of Uyghurs by the Chinese government.
Norma Redfearn, mayor of North Tyneside, appointed interim mayor of
@NorthTyneCA
today. Asked if she is endorsing any candidate for May's mayoral election, she said Labour has "one or two who I think are very capable" but that
@nick_forbes
is "well experienced, let’s be honest”.
He tells councillors: "Do you want to be the committee that, in 10 or 20 years, is the reason Newcastle United is forced to move out of the city centre and pursue a new stadium at Leazes Park or the Town Moor?"
In 2019, her majority was around 6,000.
Today, it's 66,000.
A positive for Labour on what has been a difficult day with results elsewhere in the North East.
