This is an extraordinary, gross invasion of her privacy. Her right for deeply personal information to be kept confidential sacrificed in Lancashire police’s desperate attempts to justify their approach. This ‘news’ was released to aid their reputation, not the investigation
And please, let's not do the 'not even in rape' argument. Women shouldn't have to undergo violence to 'deserve' ownership of their bodies. It should be afforded to all women, regardless of the circumstances around conception. That's why it's called a right to CHOOSE
Just worth saying that
@BootstrapCook
’s contribution to the fight for people in poverty is incalculable. She will have saved lives, will go on to save more. And I hope the love and support is felt above all else
Knock Knock!
Who’s there?
A memory!
A memory who?
A memory of the time I was drugged, bitten and assaulted, fearing I’d be killed as he stood over my paralysed body deciding what to do with me next.
Oh gosh, I’m terribly sorry! Have I ruined the joke
@JamesCleverly
??
Have I mentioned that only 2% of journalists have a parent in the lowest two occupational groups? And that 80% come from upper-class backgrounds? HAVE I? (Yes)
A SERVING MP. Publicly backing a broadcaster facing serious allegations (and undermining those making them), while an investigation by employers and assessment of material by the police is happening. I know all standards are gone, but it still somehow, sometimes, manages to shock
Brave, heartfelt & powerful speech by
@danwootton
The left will stop at nothing to try to destroy those who have different views. We have your back Dan. You and
@GBNEWS
are a light of common sense in the political cancel culture we all find ourselves facing. Keep going.
Just a woman being called a slag for looking out of a window while smiling and tell me again how she’s just being subject to usual journalistic scrutiny
Absolute perfection. Every word. Every breath. I’m not going to say much more because not everyone watches live, apart from…the way Sally Wainwright writes villains and victims is entirely radical. And every single breathless plaudit is deserved and still not enough
#HappyValley
So far we've heard that info on Harry was gathered unlawfully (since being a child) AND claims from the paper that Charles' staffer was likely handing over stuff on his son. I don't care if he was grown in an amniotic sac stitched with gold leaf, it's a miracle he's still sane
Hours spent begging for money I earned this week: 6
Amount of money I've received: £0
Number of working-class people who can afford to wait several weeks or *months* to be paid: ZERO
Number of working-class people in journalism....
JUST SHOWING MY WORKINGS
Excuse me if I'm being stupid, but can Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson simply claim that they can't access their messages? And no-one actually...checks? Is that beyond the power of the inquiry? Because my god, if we're taking people just at their word given, YOU KNOW
Another reason to love Happy Valley: we didn’t see the rape of Ann on screen in series one, but we *do* see the continuing consequences. How she still vibrates with rage and trauma almost a decade on
#HappyValley
No help/free childcare hours until your kid is three years old is *absolutely* pushing an ideological position of the state: until that age they should be cared for at home. By their mother. The below is not a bug, it's a feature
NEW: For the first time in decades, the number of young women not working to look after family is starting to rise
As 1/3 of women barely break even after returning to work, Britain's childcare costs are pushing women out of work
@PregnantScrewed
My train from Manchester to London was fine so of course the one home has been CANCELLED with no more trains leaving tonight. Which means a train to Birmingham and then a bus to Manchester. HOW IS THIS OK
I cannot get over working people not wanting other working people to earn a wage they can live on, in conditions that won’t dehumanise them. The worst kind of British boot-sucking
Worth remembering that today, tomorrow, these facts remain:
-Two women a week are killed in England & Wales by a partner/ex partner
-Only 1.3% of rapes result in a charge or summons
-90% of cases of domestic abuse cases reported in 2020 didn’t end in a charge or summons
On an entirely related note, the giddiness of some of the political reporting (while people suffer), shows for the 34,600th time why having a national press dominated by those who are privately school educated and/or independently wealthy is NOT IN THE COUNTRY'S BEST INTERESTS
If I have to listen to one more posh bloke with eight names talk about THE WORKING-CLASS in this country, I'm going to turn up outside their houses with a giant screen and play Kes twenty-four hours a day until they break
#BBCQT
Nowt says privilege like beating the shit out of your wife repeatedly and getting a knighthood for it. When it comes across this PM's desk, we'll see just how serious he is about violence against women
@holly_bourneYA
hahhhhhaaaa oh god, I'm sorry for laughing but your baby sounds amazing. THEY BROKE THE SLEEP CONSULTANT. My toddler has stopped sleeping entirely so I'm sending solidarity *and*, I'm not going to lie, respect for your offspring
Kids - KIDS - who could be enslaved, abused and worse right now. I know Gullis has got terrible, terrible form, but he's an elected member of parliament. How can there be no consequences for something so utterly immoral that shames the house and his party?
Tulip Sadiq asks the prime minister about the welfare of 200 unaccompanied migrant children who’ve gone missing.
Tory MP Jonathan Gullis heckles ‘well they shouldn’t have come here illegally’.
Just when you think you’ve heard it all, the Tory Party find a new low

What a reminder of the power in radio's intimacy, the connections nurtured day after day over decades. Not to mention quite what an outstanding broadcaster Sara Cox is
Jesus, the Sunday Times story is a hard read. So many horrific allegations, unbearable details (not to mention a wildly tone-deaf response from the BBC). Wanna know how careers can flourish while under the weight of consistent/credible allegations? This is basically a case study
As my original tweet died...Here it is again! Heart-stopping news! Billie Piper to star in and exec produce our adaptation of Coming Undone. I'm writing it. Hooray!
Between I’M BUZZING MY HEAD OFF and that lass screaming and running off with the mic, these post-match interviews are some of the best interviews I’ve ever seen
Everyone who in any way defended Cressida Dick when she was outed can truly get to fuck today. She went down still claiming that the Met wasn't soaked to the bone with misogyny. OF COURSE an officer in that culture can get away with abusing women for two decades
Seems mad to have to say this, but there is NO epidemic of women 'falsely accusing' men. There is STILL an epidemic of violence against women and we are dying in frankly obscene numbers
I'm travelling MCR-LDN about once a week and have never travelled with a company worse than
@AvantiWestCoast
. Insanely expensive, always overbooked (due to slashing services by 2/3s), consistently delayed/late trains if not just completely cancelled.
@AndyBurnhamGM
is bang on
KATHERINE RYAN SHOULD NAME THE PREDATOR SO THE POLICE CAN STOP HIM shout those oblivious to a)men with means using litigation to silence and intimidate and b)less than 1% of reported rapes end in conviction. Women use whisper networks because they're our only means of protection
Who *are* the people who when someone posts about extortionate rail-fares leap in to go, WELL ACTUALLY I THINK YOU'LL FIND IF YOU BOOK A YEAR IN ADVANCE AND TRAVEL OFF-PEAK AND WALK HALF WAY IT'S ACTUALLY A BIT CHEAPER (note: it's always *still* extortionate)
If I’ve understood this right:
Paramedics are wrong (and greedy)
Nurses are wrong (and greedy)
Train drivers are wrong (and greedy)
Posties are wrong (and greedy)
Bus drivers are wrong (and greedy)
Teachers are wrong (and greedy)
OR……
It's still *quite something* that Raab re-entered cabinet after his disastrous role in the Kabul evacuation. I still don't think we've fully appreciated, collectively, the human cost of the catastrophic mistakes made
"I am ready to fight harder than I have ever fought for anything before, for a Greater Manchester where people can live free from the fear of debt, hunger and eviction," Andy Burnham says after re-election as Greater Manchester mayor

£498.40 energy bill just landed. For ONE MONTH. Don't have the heating on in the day (I work from home in jumpers/coat/gloves) and only for a few hours at night because I have A CHILD who I'd rather didn't freeze. Is this the sunlit uplands?
It increasingly feels like Rishi Sunak’s amorality and all-consuming avariciousness is rote in a way we’ve not quite seen before. There’s nowt but his ‘right’ to win, grab power. No character, opinions, beliefs (even bad ones). A distant echo of a man dropped into a PM’s suit
Dead happy. Bit my lip. Didn’t cry. Thank you
@BASW_UK
. And a plea to broadcasters, publishers, media companies to hire, have *faith* in journalists who come from working-class backgrounds, have lived experience, might not sound how audiences expect, will tell different stories
From the guy who ran Conde Nast, the magazine publisher. Who worked there for 30 years. The place where my mag friends told me they were asked what their daddy did in the job interview. Where they were "schooled". But let's all keep scratching our heads about class and journalism
The new provost of
@Eton_College
in today’s
@Telegraph
He says most of his friends are Old Etonians - and if he meets somebody who did not go there “I do admit…that it counts against them slightly.”
Was there not a candidate with a more open mind?
98.7% of reported rapes don't see charges. 99% don't see a conviction. This outcome was statistically nailed-on, because rape is still effectively decriminalised. But of course, this is now being interpreted by some as proof of his innocence and of a woman's false reporting
BREAKING: Greater Manchester Police say proceedings against a 21-year-old man, arrested in January 2022, have been discontinued by the CPS, and that "this decision has not been taken lightly."
CPS have confirmed to me this is Mason Greenwood, they're issuing a statement shortly.
Mothers: I’d like to still have the career I love and invested years in and am good at and that helps provide for my family

Roman Polanski's producer says France is icing the filmmaker out, as it's almost impossible to get the director's new film sold in his adopted country: “If this film doesn’t get released in France, it’s a crime.”
Whatever you think of the politics, perceived concessions, current iteration of Labour etc.,,,within the current political landscape (especially), a woman like Angela Rayner, with her life experiences, working at the level she does, is fucking MIRACULOUS
It's true, it's true! Top Gun: Maverick is the most fun I've had at the pictures in a long, long, long, long (long) time. Go see it, then see it again, then go home and dream about it, bake it a cake and declare yourselves wed. A proper, full-fat, note-perfect blockbuster
A note for clarity (important when public anger/upset is understandably strong). Finley was returned to his parents by the courts. The social worker had argued for a six-month transitional period. The larger point: social workers do not have the power to remove or return a child
Yes, it’s almost midnight and yes, I’m still thinking about Happy Valley. Those two big storylines peaking: the choreography of the writing and direction! But also, still, the details. The breadcrumbs being laid. TAKE THAT COAT OFF
#HappyValley
This is mad. BBC massively overcompensating by gagging presenters (and one with multiple higher-profile gigs/no role in news and politics/not even particularly associated with BBC) from ever posting about political issues as, you know, an individual and human is a wild overreach
SOME NEWS
I'm leaving BBC Radio Wales.
Please read why ⏬️
And thank you 🙏🏼 all of you who answered the funny questions I asked every week about old memories and daft stories. I loved them. You made me laugh so much 😃🤍
But now...onwards to the next very interesting chapter 😉
Right. I have never felt a pure, uncomplicated, entirely uncynical burst of joy like the one when watching my boy’s first nativity performance. Parenting is wild, man
84% of those people are WOMEN. We can't forget that a government's refusal to engage with making childcare affordable - and therefore giving women *choices* - is also an ideological position
The ‘Clarkson’s referencing Game of Thrones with his wish to see Meghan naked and pelted with shit’ crowd are the absolute worst (and reaching). How would it even change his sentiment? The misogyny? How does it alter his “hate” for her? The *Rose West* reference?
After eight months of graft and emotion, my new Radio 5 Live/BBC Sounds podcast series, 'Terri White: Finding Britain's Missing Ghost Children' launches tomorrow. Please have a listen to the first ep (if you like!). I'll be talking about it on your radio and telly in the morning
I wrote about the very personal bits of making the podcast: journeying back home via my social services records and a reunion with my junior school teacher. There are words about sexual abuse and violence. Go easy
WELL, whenever I talk about money and what I'm/my work is worth on Twitter, a clutch of men come into my mentions to try and shame me for it. So let me be clear: every working person has the right to expect fair pay for a fair day's work. I take pride in my work and know my worth
Sally Wainwright always does the stuff in episodes 3 and 4 that most writers would save for the final two. Which then means all bets/conventions are off for the finale and I’m not sure my constitution will withstand it
#HappyValley
I wrote about class-passing for today's The Sunday Times Style - why as a working-class journalist I wasted years pretending to be sommeat I wasn't. Or trying anyway. Features posh people and a terrible misunderstanding about Stella (McCartney/Artois)
We all have our stories, right. Mine: this was not long before my mother-in-law had a stroke and we weren't allowed out of London to be with her and her husband of 38 years had to sit outside in the car park and fuck you
I am thoroughly, profoundly devastated by All of Us Strangers and so cheered by the insane emotion spreading amongst a chunk of the humans I know as they emerge from dark rooms. Viva British film! VIVA THE FUCKING PICTURES!
The woman-hating/shaming in my mentions is for real and so I'd really like to share this brilliant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review of Olivia Wilde's first film, Booksmart. Enjoy!
"Case dropped after court hears Kate Greville didn't want to give evidence because 'worn down' and 'violated' by process."
And that is the system working as designed
Big day in court: Ryan Giggs cleared of charges that he was a violent, abusive partner to then-girlfriend.
Case dropped after court hears Kate Greville didn't want to give evidence because 'worn down' and 'violated' by process.
Giggs 'deeply relieved'.
MATES. Even by Nadine Dorries' standards of being Nadine Dorries, those tweets are something elseeee. Does she know what she's just publicly admitted to on behalf of her own party? I can't stop looking at it, AGOG
I wrote a memoir about being abused by men, the complex trauma that warped me into a mess, a DICK. Having spent most of last year, two, working on adaptation, it's been instructive and...painful to watch Baby Reindeer fallout, specifically what's come raining down on Richard Gadd
Enjoying reading all the tips and tricks in the papers to save money on energy LIKE IT’S TOTALLY NORMAL TO NOT BE ABLE TO PUT YOUR LIGHTS ON/HEAT YOUR HOME (boil a pan of water instead of a kettle! Close the curtains to keep heat in! Kill your husband and use his skin as a coat!)
We have to reckon with how working-class girls, esp. the vulnerable, are viewed and treated by authorities when it comes to CSE. They weren't even seen as 'children' but liars, offenders, up for it. And what were their lives worth, anyway? Who'd be kicking down doors for them?
Got a LOT of time for Andy Burnham losing his rag w/train bosses. When most of what we see from politicians is self-serving & performative - PMQs, obfuscatory media round, QT - it's thrilling to see him give a fuck/be angry on behalf of the people he represents. WEIRD CONCEPT, EH
This Fiona Bruce mess. There'll be the argument that she was duty bound to present any recorded response to an allegation (without a conviction). Here's the problem with that. She quoted an anonymous source who spoke to a newspaper ('friends' of Stanley Johnson) 1/4
Literally every journey I take is cancelled, delayed, overcrowded and/or overpriced. And Westminster carries on regardless because who cares if anyone up north can leave their house to work
Once more with feeling! Fiona Bruce wasn't giving a right of reply. Stanley Johnson's ROR was no comment. What she quoted was anon source/on background. THIS ISN'T A RIGHT OF REPLY.
The *only* obligation was to say that Johnson/his reps had refused to comment on the allegation
An official right of reply is on the record and named. Direct quotes from anonymous sources ID'd only by relationship/position are on background. No-one should be presenting information on background as an actual ROR and THEY KNOW THIS
And please don't give me keeping warm, money-saving tips. However well-intentioned. Heating your home and keeping offspring warm shouldn't be something you have to apocalyptically wangle and game your way towards
1)More or less 'petrified' than the kids starving/dying in a grossly under-funded social care system?
2)Tucked in the middle of this story: 'Research by the London School of Economics suggested that scrapping the non-dom regime would lead to just 0.3% – or 77 people – leaving...'
I know many disappointments/betrayals have been and gone, but if Starmer’s Labour won’t stamp all over a punitive, discriminatory, cruel, wildly over-reaching, morally bankrupt policy that has pushed a million+ CHILDREN deeper into poverty then truly, what is the fucking point
The two-child benefit cap disproportionately impacts Pakistani households (42% with 3 or more children) and Bangladeshi households (38%)
British Pakistani and Bangladeshi children suffer the highest rates of poverty in the UK at 54% and 59% respectively.
Not to mention the questions this raises about the assumptions they made about her and her disappearance, on the back of this information. Seriously, what is happening? The police behaving like tabloids by putting this into the public domain is just... insane
“You won’t ever know the worst that happened to Nicole Brown Simpson in her marriage, because she is dead and cannot tell you. And if she were alive, remember, you wouldn’t believe her.”
Class representation in media has absolutely not improved since my twenties, but please, young w/c journalists, don't let them grind you, your work or you voice down. Or make you/it more palatable or respectable. Learn quicker than I did. You'll have stuff they never will
I have no skin in this game anymore, but seeing some Indiana Jones chat, I'm compelled to say that EMPIRE never trades positive reviews for access. A)Because they truly are in service of film fans and B)Access is negotiated so far out it just couldn't happen. But mainly A)
In the two years since I’ve left my job, I’ve been able to spend loads of time with my son AND learnt that going freelance/working (full-time) from home is the death of equality in parenting, work and the domestic space. Do you think that’ll fit on a party banner?! 🎉🎉
