While everyone rushes to back the “picks and shovels” of AI, I want to back founders trying to find “gold” - i.e create products that change how people work and live. Here are key takeaways from my new post on building lasting value in AI-first products
This is very sad. When George Floyd was murdered, I went out to protest. I organized fundraisers and donated personally.
When anti-semitic activists co-opt a great cause, it hurts everyone
A poster with a terrorist on their way to behead babies is not something to celebrate
Socialism vs. capitalism from the perspective of your mom having cancer
Pure capitalism she can’t afford the treatment
Pure socialism the treatment doesn’t exist (it was never invented)
Capitalism with a social safety net is the answer that no one seems to be offering
I saw a venture investor the other day.
No podcast
No twitter
No conferences
No self-congratulatory lists
Just investing in areas they know something about. And working with a small set of companies. Like a psychopath.
The genius marketing of Hamas
Gaza operates as an independent state, whose leader has a stated goal to commit genocide against its neighbor
Naturally, Israel has a strict border with this neighbor - what people call a "blockade"
And, Hamas has branded this blockade
Amazon *does* pay their taxes
If you lose money, you can credit that against future profits
The tax code incentivizes investment in employees, r&d etc. NOT huge profits
Amazon historically runs at a loss because they invest in growth
So, they don’t owe taxes this year
Everyone can now generate an entire presentation with AI using just a description of the deck
It’s live today from

The irrationality of being negative on crypto after a centralized casino demonstrated the need for crypto (self custody, transparency etc.) is so fascinating
It is interesting — the concept of exploiting workers to create wealth is/was a fear of the Industrial Age
The fear of the Information Age is creating wealth WITHOUT workers
Interesting corollary: the fewer people you employ in the process of wealth creation, the harder it becomes to claim that you “exploited” people.
In the limit case, software entrepreneurs make billions solo, like JK Rowling. Satoshi and Notch are early examples.
Many Jews are feeling:
1. Grief: babies in our community decapitated
2. Shock: people are celebrating
3. Fear: people chanting "gas the Jews"
4. Memory: echos of the holocaust
5. Anxiety: what happens when we defend ourselves
We spent $1.9 trillion to stimulate the shut down economy while many vaccine sites close at 6, millions of doses sit in storage, and you can't easily book an appointment online
I *believe* we could rent space, pay over time, and build a booking website for less than $2 trillion
The collapse of a centralized casino actually demonstrated the need for crypto (self custody, transparency etc.)
But what are the actual use cases of crypto and why does it matter?
I'm doing a deep dive on one of them: DeFi lending
Here’s what we know:
- Zuckerberg ”doesn’t know” when he/FB discovered the Cambridge Analytica scandal. That is hard to believe.
- After Zuck privately met w/ Trump & far-right, he’s now allowing paid disinformation ads.
- He didn’t tell the whole truth abt his “fact checkers”
TikTok replaced the social graph with an algorithm, and created a new network, powered by AI
It's under-explored how we can use AI to create new networks
For example, if you build a career coach "agent" and a recruiting "agent", you can make introductions based on unique data…
1800s: Europe —> Canada 🇨🇦
2022: Canada —> America 🇺🇸
Excited to start a new chapter for my family.
And despite all the chaos, and posts about DAOs replacing countries, I’m grateful for the freedom & opportunity America offers, even if you’re not born here
If Hamas’s goal was peace, they would have accepted one of the several peace offers
Instead, their goal, as stated in their charter, is the destruction of Israel
Their weapon is Palestinian (and Israeli) suffering
They rape & behead Israeli citizens, which illicits a…
I’m getting married in Israel in June
While it may seem trivial, the purpose of a free & safe country is to be able to celebrate moments like this
Extremists in Iran tried to disrupt events like this by launching a barbaric attack on Oct 7 through their proxies, Hamas, and
When people refer to “75 years of occupation” they’re referring to Israel occupying Israel — I.e Israel’s right to exist
They’re not referring to the occupation of Gaza, which ended in 2005
A peaceful Palestinian state would be amazing for Israel, which is why Hamas rejects it
If there were mass rape and beheadings targeting civilians in any other western country, there wouldn’t be ambiguity of right vs. wrong
Either because of antisemitism or misinformation, this response is different, and it’s very sad.
Dating: mirroring the insecurities of yourself and all past relationships on an imperfect person to assess if you want to combine your emotional and financial lives together until death balanced by the primal instinct to keep the species alive
Some additional capital to support founders at the earliest stages
If you're building something in fintech or crypto, particularly in NYC, let me know 👀
1/ We at
@GreylockVC
are excited to announce we’ve raised $500M dedicated to seed investing. This is the industry’s largest pool of venture capital dedicated to backing founders at day one.
Two updates at
@GreylockVC
1. A new $1bn fund focused on early stage
2. Greylock Edge, a company building program built for exceptional founders to navigate from idea to product market fit
@lessin
@Harvard
Sadly it’s even worse
Imagine if after George Floyd professors celebrated his murder and white supremacist protestors called for more murder *and* this didn’t violate the university code of conduct
Didn’t realize many people think of “saving” and “investing” as two different things, with “saving” meaning holding cash
Cash depreciates at 2-3% per year
Simple early stage investing framework:
1. Is it working?
Series A
Engagement, retention, unit economics
2. Will it continue to work?
Series B
Sales efficiency, NDR, TAM
3. When it works, will it be valuable?
Series C+
Defensibility, margins, exit multiple
Times like these bring out all of our other anxieties
Why am I single?
How do my partner and I work in a crises? & under quarantine?
Am I valuable enough to my company while remote indefinitely?
Etc. etc.
Take care of your mental health 🙏

Also, excited to announce my new role as GP at Greylock, where I'll be focused on AI applications and fintech. Thanks to the founders who took an early bet on me. Look forward to paying it forward.
Thanks to
@reidhoffman
for kicking off the Product Led AI series where we explore opportunities at the application layer of AI
As
@ScottWu46
said, even if you freeze underlying models, we still have 10+ years of building to transform them into usable products
Some highlights:
@mkabir
100% you're right. But that particular paraglider was a terrorist who targeted, murdered and raped innocent civilians. They have harmed both Palestinians and Israelis. It's not something to celebrate.
Our grandparents generation were exterminated
Germany would've preferred to save the gas and deport Jews, but no one would take them
Canada's policy was "none is too many"
Now, after 6m dead, there's 1 Jewish state (vs. 52 Arab)
We saw the consequences of not keeping it safe
The Pete pitch:
1. Only thing that matters is beating trump
2. Battleground is for moderate republicans who don’t have a home
3. Warren/Sanders are not appealing to moderate republicans
4. Biden has too much baggage and is not inspiring
5. Vote Pete
If your goal is killing Jews and harming Israel, Hamas is effective
If your goal is peace and prosperity for Palestinian people, Hamas is not effective
Your support for Hamas depends on your goals
It’s so interesting that there are many people who would rather people *think* they have money (or are successful) than actually have money (or be successful)
Before 30 goals
Either hit a bunch of arbitrary milestones or mature enough to realize they don’t matter
Or realize the primary value of the former is the latter (?)
@louloukhazen
I know, the Palestinian people are the biggest victims of Hamas
I’m sure you can see that?
Of course Israel would respond after murdering 1,500 people civilians, yet they did it anyways
Liberals will be shocked to learn that regardless of FB’s ad policy they’re going to need to run an inspirational leader that appeals to real people that have been left behind, not socialism or pre-2016 thinking
Announcing Greylock's Fund 16 - a billion dollar fund, focused on consumer and enterprise tech at earliest stages. Grateful to the founders who invite us to share their journey; it’s our privilege to work with them
Sharing a few of my career/life principles:
1. The worst hand in poker is the second best
The appearance of greatness keeps you at the table, and you never win (i.e. don't get trapped in a good, but not great job)
@WebSummit
was already irrelevant
Now, its leader, in response to clear acts of terror against civilians, chose 10/7 as the moment to criticize Israel
This is not subtle anti semitism
I hope all sponsors, speakers & attendees publicly withdraw
@paddycosgrave
Saddened by your ill-informed stance. You could’ve taken a more nuanced one, condemning these atrocities and calling for restraint. That would’ve been acceptable. You chose to support terrorists. As such I’ll never attend/sponsor/speak at any of your events again.
Money 20/20 recap
1. Boondoggle budgets down
2. Everyone’s talking about fraud & compliance
3. Venetian still impossible to navigate
Did I miss anything?
1/ A process to help take on personal risk -- from a few journal entries in 2016 when I decided to leave my job at Facebook & turn down seemingly attractive job offers to pursue a passion…
The biggest opportunity for AI apps isn’t start-ups or incumbents — it’s seed & A companies that have spent 2 years building valuable workflow & can now go all-in on AI
2-year head start vs. new companies & no incumbent baggage
Ghost story
My Mom passed away 4 years ago
She *loved* cooking, especially for the Jewish holidays
After she passed away, whenever the whole family was in the kitchen, the light in the oven would unexpectedly turn on, without anyone touching it

2020 goal: achieve arbitrary milestones constructed by other people to temporarily distract from the existential awareness of my, and everyone I love’s, mortality

Difference in direct communication
People in SF will tell you the root cause of their deepest insecurity but no direct feedback on your life (partner, job etc.)
New Yorkers are the opposite
It’s my 95 year old great Aunt’s birthday today
In the 1940s she worked at an under ground bullet factory
Today she’s sewing masks
Your resilience is inspiring
Happy birthday!
