We’ve officially signed the paperwork, received the keys🔑, & the @WHO flag🇺🇳 now proudly flies outside our Nouveau Centre🏢 #IARCNC . Moving of equipment begins soon & personnel will occupy the building from early 2023 to begin a new era of #cancer research for cancer prevention!

Today is #WorldLungCancerDay ! IARC estimates #LungCancer to be the 2nd most common cancer in the 🌏, accounting for approx 1 in 8 of all cancer cases. The risk of lung cancer is 20-25 times as high in men and women who smoke compared to those who do not smoke.

IARC has evaluated the carcinogenicity of occupational exposure as a #firefighter 🧑‍🚒. After thoroughly reviewing the available scientific literature, the Working Group classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1)

Drinking #alcohol caused 740K+ cases of #cancer in 2020. Most were caused by heavy drinking BUT 100K+ were caused by drinking up to 20g (25ml) of alcohol/day. That’s only ~1 pint of 4.5% beer, ~1.5 glasses of 12% wine, or ~1 glass of 40% spirits /day

The #IARC Monographs programme has evaluated the carcinogenicity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) & classified PFOA as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) and PFOS as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)

#Lung cancer causes >1/5 of cancer deaths in men; #Breast cancer causes >1/7 of #cancer deaths in women. We must not overlook other leading causes of cancer death – colorectal, stomach, liver, cervical & prostate cancers. Effective prevention & screening policies are needed.
