I’m very happy to say that, contrary to the wishes of certain oligarchs, Kleptopia, my book on how dirty money is conquering the world, will remain available in all good bookshops. Kleptocracy is the greatest threat we face. At the very least, we should be able to read about it.

The UK is calling time on particular oligarchs from one kleptocracy (Putin’s). What it is not doing is calling time on London’s role as the global hub for dirty money. So the “enablers” - lawyers, bankers, PRs, spies, lobbyists, lords - can just find new kleptocrats to serve.

I’m writing a new book. About the truth - and who gets to tell it. So after 16 years as a member of the Africa corps then the investigations team I’ve left the @FinancialTimes . Long may its fine journalists report without fear or favour. One old fave

The regimes in this new order may look very different: communists and capitalists, nationalists and socialists. But they are united in their central endeavour: they are kleptocrats seeking to hoard wealth and power. And they have a big ally in the US

This is the big danger in sanctions. Use them too much and the outcasts form an alliance - a shadow global economy. We’ve seen it already with eg Venezuela-Iran deals. The risk is hastening a new order led by the Politburo in Beijing and the Kremlin

Some cheering news. Another UK judge declines to let the courts be used as sticks for the rich to beat journalists with.

It started back in 2021 when I heard that a rich Conservative donor called Mohamed Amersi had hired lawyers to go after a former MP who'd raised questions about his past, including how he made his money in Russia and elsewhere.

This is a big moment for the free press. Lawfare censors vital information about some of the world’s most powerful people. The task now is to ensure that reform breaks the power of sheer wealth to stifle the scrutiny on which democracies depend

The fear caused among investigators and witnesses by these deaths is magnified by not knowing who or what to be afraid of: those who wish to keep ENRC’s affairs secret, any rivals who might wish to harm the company, or figures from the risky places where it does business. (7/11)

This is important. A free press is a vital defence against kleptocracies like Putin’s and it is under attack. Important to remember, though, that most “lawfare” never comes to court - it succeeds long before that by intimidating media into dropping stories
