In English, we say we're 'broke,' indicating something is fundamentally wrong with us, but in Persian, we say, 'my wings are tied' (bāl o param basta ast). The idea is that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with a poor person, they're just restricted by unfair circumstances.

Let’s break down the photo of the white women praying at University of Texas. Some say, “what’s the problem with public prayer?” This isn’t about a problem with public prayer, or a problem with prayer at all. Prayer is a beautiful spiritual practice. What we’re witnessing,

One of the few remaining traditional tailors in Tehran, Darwish Muhammad. Few people know that a dying art is being kept alive inside Muhammad's small, unassuming shop.

AVOID THESE THAWB MISTAKES 🧵 For various reasons, thawbs have become a uniform for Muslim men in the diaspora, and you see many non-Arabs making elementary thawb mistakes.

Imagine having a society so fragile that a foreign script threatens you. I can't even call Arabic foreign to Turkey. It was the script of Ottoman Turkish, and millions of Turks the world over still write Turkish that way. They might as well tear down all of the Ottoman placards

Iqbal-e Lahori street (as he's known in Iran) in Tehran and Mashhad. Iranians often call Allama Iqbal the 'most Iranian foreigner' because of their love for his poetry.

After the revolution, Iran re-named the British Embassy street from 'Winston Churchill' to 'Bobby Sands' to troll the British. The restaurant opened on that street and bears this name for that reason. The original location has closed, their new location is in northern Tehran.

American Muslims will spend 15 million dollars building this out-of-place aesthetic nightmare. Meanwhile, a beautiful Gothic church has sat abandoned nearby for years.

Muslim twitter exposing lay Muslims to medieval theology debates has been very damaging. In Muslim countries, you find pious people who don't know if they're asha'ri or maturidi, hanafi or shafi'i, and on here you see people takfiring each other over 1000-year old issues.

I love Tehran because it's a city where people install Rumi on their home facade.
