Five years ago, a US President stood on Cuban soil and called for democratic changes and respect for human rights directly before the island’s rulers.
But tell me again how opposing engagement is better?
Sorry Mr. President, the previous
#Cuba
policy wasn’t failing. It remains vastly more popular among Cubans on the island than anything you’ve done.

The Cuban Embassy in DC gets sprayed with bullets by a lone gunman and the comdemnation comes not from the State Dept but from the US chargé in Havana?

This tweet aged well. As did
@brhodes
’s article. All key arguments for engagement with
#Cuba
hold. Trump’s strong man posturing may have helped Republicans win seats in Miami. But his policies only punished families and placed Cuban gov’t hardliners back in their comfort zone.
It’s clear that politicians like Scott will support ever more aggressive blanket sanctions on Cuba—not to topple the regime, unilateral sanctions don’t topple anyone—but to further fuel the border migration crisis they count on to mobilize voters. As cynical as it is barbaric.

Explain to me again how this is better than Obama?
Honored to be meeting with
@POTUS
today to discuss how the U.S. can best help strengthen the
#Cuban
people at this critical moment, while holding their state oppressors accountable.
For 15 months, the White House refused to act on Biden’s
#Cuba
campaign promises due in part to the supplications of fearful Florida Dems who can’t find Hialeah without using Waze.
Thousands of Cuban families on both sides of the Straits paid the price.
All for nothing.
A plea for

@POTUS
must ease these sanctions immediately.

U.S. remittances to
#Cuba
are channeled through one of these entities. It is inhumane and the height of hypocrisy for Sec. Pompeo to claim the Trump Administration stands with the Cuban people while attempting to cut off remittances to Cuban families in the middle of a pandemic.
Today, we add seven new subentities to the Cuba Restricted List. We will continue to stop the flow of money into the pockets of those who oppress the Cuban people. 61 years of oppression and dictatorship are enough. To the Cuban people: you deserve better and we stand with you.
It’s remarkably ironic how little consideration Trump administration officials -of all people- give to nationalist pride in their expectations that Iran, Venezuela or Cuba will buckle under US “maximum pressure” campaigns.
Demonizar a una actriz cubana por visitar su tierra natal para ver a sus familiares y amistades debe de ser una de las maneras más inútiles de promover la libertad en Cuba.
I will never understand the logic:
Yea we tried Obama for two years and it didn’t work immediately, so let’s go back to what hasn’t worked for 60 YEARS and if you don’t like it eres un communista!
It is madness.
Everyone trying right now to coordinate aid to the
#Cuban
people is running into a morass of OFAC and Commerce shipping and banking restrictions. This is how current U.S. policy doesn't help.
We need to get out of our own way.
Discourse among Cuban Americans is now at a place where popular
#Cuba
policy measures are impractical and practical measures are unpopular.
This is why Trump did so well with the community. Because he promised libertad and then lied & lied & lied (in Miami) about delivering it.
As I mentioned during our meeting yesterday, there are practical steps
@POTUS
can take right now to enhance internet access in
#Cuba
. Such as allowing US firms to provide cloud-based services like online P2P payment apps & SaaS platforms that remain prohibited under US regs.

Three years ago today, President Trump flew to Miami to announce he was "cancelling" Obama's
#Cuba
policy. He said he'd "seek a much better deal for the Cuban people" and help them "form businesses and pursue much better lives." How well has that worked out for Cubans so far? 1/
News flash: you’ve already thrown the full sanctions book at the Cuban government. A “full and complete embargo” means punishing the people. Tripling-down on same failed approach is just plain asinine.

@brhodes
on
#PodSaveTheWorld
about how
@POTUS
should re-engage with
#Cuba
. Interview starts at 57:20 (tho entire episode’s great).
Miami pols wanted to ban Cuba flights to curb Covid. Now Cuba may have to bar us.
We laughed at Cubans for their makeshift masks. Then we had to sew our own.
We criticize them for sending medical teams door to door. Now look at Miami.
Maybe we should learn to pick our battles?
For the first time, Miami-Dade County will send teams to neighborhoods with the highest number of coronavirus cases to educate people about social distancing and masking and distribute hand sanitizer and mask. The county is also providing hotel rooms for people to self-isolate.
Strongly worded statement by
@POTUS
in support of the Cuban people. But we need more that strong words.
We need direct diplomacy and an easing of sanctions that, as Biden recognized, "have done nothing to advance democracy or human rights" or curb Covid-19 spread in
#Cuba
.
NEW: President Joe Biden said the United States supports the Cuban people and called their rare protests a “clarion call for freedom and relief” from the pandemic and generations of dictatorship.
Now that

The Florida GOP’s

strategy is cynical beyond words. They’ve convinced Trump to pile on the pain for 11 million ppl just to appease approx 100,000 aggrieved voters (out of 1.2MM Cuban-Americans) who after 60 yrs still refuse to accept that unilateral sanctions don’t deliver.

I asked Peru’s foreign minister what he might do if sanctions against Maduro start negatively impacting the humanitarian situation in Venezuela. Pompeo stepped in & said I “shouldn’t ask questions like that” & accused me of blaming the crisis on the US. I didn’t, but you decide:
It’s strange. Based on his opeds and SFRC work, Rubio clearly yearns to be regarded as a global foreign policy thinker. But in the areas where he’s actually had a chance to shape policy,

Si vives en Cuba, como percibes que te impactan o no las sanciones/embargo de EEUU?
(Obvio que esto no es una encuesta científica pero curioso ver cómo se responde. ✌️)
Truth: the Cuban embargo is counterproductive policy & should be lifted.
Reality
#1
: marshaling the votes in Congress to lift the embargo bears a high political cost. It’s why it hasn’t happened.
Reality
#2
: the Cuban govt’s response to
#11J
has caused that cost to skyrocket.
Hard to see how Biden admin hopes to (a) rally international pressure vs the Cuban gov’t, or (b) encourage US tech firms to apply for OFAC licenses to expand internet access in
#Cuba
when all it does is pile targeted sanctions on top of universally-condemned blanket sanctions.
Maduro is stronger today than when the hardline Cuban embargo lobby started dictating Trump’s Venezuela policy.
Let that sink in for a minute, Florida.

YouTube, Facebook, Twitter & all other social media that enables Cubans to stream-cast protests and connect w/ the world: American and thanks to the engagement policies of the Obama administration.
The government’s technology to shut down the Internet: almost certainly Chinese.
Two key and obvious differences with the last time Cubans took to the streets in 1994: the internet, through which countless videos and pics have been shared, and Fidel Castro who, try though they might, the current leadership can’t imitate.
There is no denying that much of what we’re seeing in
#Cuba
today is organic and representative of real grievances. Official calls for “combat” are as irresponsible as calls for “military intervention” from the US. The Cuban government must be responsive to all its citizens.

The most underreported story in the year since this White House announced its "
#Cuba
policy review" is how Biden's inner circle abandoned all campaign promises on Cuba just to placate Sen. Menendez. Their inaction has had little to do with Florida or supporting the Cuban people.
For those paying attention: nativist Florida Republicans (1) support blanket economic sanctions on
#Cuba
, (2) despite their pull effect on migration to U.S. border, which they now seek to solve by (3) busing new Cuban migrants to Delaware once they get to Miami.
This is lunacy.
Cuban-American Lt. Gov. of Florida calls for sending historic numbers of Cuban migrants this year on buses out of S Florida to Delaware, Biden's state.
Wow.

The lesson here is not “bypass the Cuban American community when implementing common-sense Cuba policy.”
The lesson is bypass any Florida Dem who does not yet understand that showing leadership on this issue matters more than avoiding it in fear of getting labeled a communist.

When we finally shake ourselves out of this irrational era we’re living through, perhaps we’ll wonder how we ceded the ground we gained in Cuba under Obama over to China and Russia for at least a generation, just so politicians could virtue signal to their Florida constituents.
China endorsed the Taliban’s abusive rule over Afghanistan and then announced it supports the communist regime in Cuba. This tells the world everything we need to know about where the Cuban dictatorship stands when it comes to freedom and human rights.

Just spend a week in Puerto Rico after more than a year away from the Caribbean since my last pre-Covid visit to Cuba. It was soul replenishing. No matter where I reside, there’s no escaping it. Soy isleño. En las dos alas I will always feel at home.
Five years ago today, I watched the Stones rock Havana. Hard not to lament the colossal waste the Trump years were for every hopeful Cuban at that historic concert.
Two things can be true at the same time:
The Cuban gov’t is brutally repressive in defense of its power.
US sanctions don’t reduce that repression and compound hardships suffered by Cubans demanding freedoms.
We must resist either/or trappings and fix what is our role to fix.
First rule: no one moves to Miami as a result of doing homework. You move there because you fell in love, need family to babysit, or are fleeing another government. Thassit. The less questions you ask going in the better.

I always enjoy days when hardline claims that US-Cuba engagement deals betray the Cuban people get undermined by literally every Cuban who doesn’t work in Miami politics.
On July 30,
@POTUS
directed
@StateDept
&
@USTreasury
to provide recommendations "within a month" for "how to maximize the flow of remittances to the
#Cuban
people, without the Cuban military taking their cut."
The month is up. We hope to see recommendations (and action) soon.
This is the definition of the “pressure cooker” policy. Force barbaric conditions on the Cuban people in hopes that it will lead to social collapse and then, magically, to democracy.
Fact: It has never worked. Anywhere.
@RepCarlos
’s posturing is inhumane and irresponsible.
On
@ActualidadRadio
,
@RepCarlos
says the situation in Cuba shows the US can’t relax hardline policies toward Cuba. Asked if he would advocate for some protections if the protests lead to an exodus, he says “If you do that, you’re telling Cubans to throw themselves to the ocean.”
A real pro who witnessed first hand the positive impact that engagement policy had in

It’s been 45 days since the Remittance Working Group submitted its recommendations to

The

in the black market for nearly a year.
During a pandemic.
There simply is no justification.
Good to see
@StateDept

Florida Republicans talking a big game of democracy in Cuba to distract from their active efforts to undermine voting rights in the U.S. would make Fidel blush.
Obama’s opening gave Cubans a taste of a freer world. For the first time in 50+ yrs they dreamt of a brighter future at home.
The regime’s fear of change & Trump’s sanctions crushed those dreams.
We know which is the better way. It has to be updated based on what we’ve learned.
