I need an article on why so many doctors want to be social media influencers to the point where they undermine their credibility as medical professionals
Free SNL skit idea: someone wearing a “I am my ancestors’ wildest dream” gets transported back to the past and gets absolutely roasted for being so corny
Black parents love calling you in the middle of the day during the week and asking if you’re at work. It’s 2pm on a Tuesday what do you think I’m doing?!
I have this theory that Black employees are forced to switch jobs more often due to bias, lack of opportunities for growth, overt racism, etc but I wish I could find data on this
Wondering how much the angry BW stereotype in the office is due to the fact that BW are often the only ones willing to speak up and state the plain truth
Maybe I am overthinking it but the fact that a mass movement that raised $90 million (likely more than that but it's what we know of) produced no discernible change for Black individuals feels like something we should be talking about more
The Tory Lanez trial has me depressed about Black media and overall media literacy. The fact that it's been a white reporter really breaking down all the misinformation online is something
Thinking about how the “I’m not one of your little friends” style of Black parenting gets complicated when the child has to provide financial support to the parent
I'm sitting in a cafe listening to this mom offer to pay her daughter's living expenses for the next 8 months so she can try and launch her career as a writer. Gotta imagine this is why the journalism/writing industry partially looks the way it does.
I honestly believe the media pushed the “Blacks don’t want the vaccine” narrative as a way to distract from the racial disparities we’ve seen in the vaccine rollout
The way Black families refuse to respect personal boundaries is wild to me. And I really suspect this is something that disproportionately impacts Black women
IVF is for the privileged which is why you see the GOP scrambling. The tension between the GOP have and the GOP have nots is gonna be interesting to see
Shaun King will keep scamming because white liberals are too afraid of being called racist if they critique him. That’s the wildest thing about racism—it blocks opportunities but also allows scams to flourish
Kate is alive (I don't think her sister would be on vacation if she wasn't) but I do think she walked out because she got fed up with the cheating and the palace is scrambling
No one wants activists to be poor or suffer but it’s suspicious that no one can give a real accounting of the money raised, families impacted by police violence are homeless and homegirl has 4 properties
Someone recently said to me that upper middle class Black people think being mistaken for a poor Black person is why they experience racism which leads to them to hold contempt for poor Black people
I see editors in chief resigning. I sincerely hope that these institutions don’t rush to hire a black woman without making sure that the company had worked to address the larger problems. Otherwise it’s just a glass cliff situation
Everyone is upset about that activism reality TV show competition but it seems like the natural end result of everything that’s been happening since 2014. Blue Vest doing ads for Doritos. Activists with real estate portfolios. Activists signing deals with major talent agencies
Twitter isn’t the best place for complex convos but putting aside the amount of $$$ raised, BLM was arguably the one of the largest social movements in the past decade and Black folks saw…nothing as a result
Anyway the other side is being very loud about what they are planning. Black people keep your head on a swivel. Because "DEI" really means Black people in corporate jobs period
I have a folder for “praise” and a folder for “shade”. It’s important to be able to have this stuff written down or archived for reviews or if you need to negotiate an exit/severance package
I mean I think about the pandemic all day and am constantly figuring out how to best be of service but sometimes I’ll just be reading or drinking a glass of wine and the full weight of this moments hits me
Before we lose this app I hope we can have a conversation about how white liberal guilt in Hollywood has led to a lot of half baked, underwritten Black projects being projected
We really need to stop feeding the myth that you have as much control over your career as you think you have. There’s a lot of factors that are outside of your control
The discourse on here about the Tory Lanez trial is downright scary. Some people don’t even seem to know that the state brings these kind of charges, not the individual victim
I suspect there’s 2 reasons for this: 1.
BW are expected to mule for their families no matter how they are treated and 2. A lot of Black parents are emotionally immature and do not know how to parent their adult children. They’re stuck in a dynamic where their child is a kid
And if things go left at a job don’t be afraid to consult with an attorney. You’d be surprised how many people get a settlement to set themselves up comfortably after some racial nonsense has gone down
My mom told my aunt that I’m only allowing vaccinated individuals at my wedding next week and my aunt’s response was “when did she decide she gets to play God?” 🙃🙃🙃
There’s a specific category of scam behavior that flourishes due to the intersection of 1. Black people rooting for everyone Black and 2. White people being afraid they will be labeled racist if they call it out
I’m over here reflecting on my resume and there’s at least 2 jobs I didn’t want to leave but I felt like I had no choice but to leave given the lack of opportunities and sponsorship
I think people are forgetting how hard the past year was for Black communities which is what I think is driving some of the negative feelings about making Juneteenth a national holiday
I have a theory Black employees need to be in environments where the talent bar is very high. Because if you are demonstrably smarter and more credentialed than your white peers you will be resented and punished
Someone needs to write the definitive examination of how pseudoscience took hold in our society. I thought in 2019 we’d be on the verge of a cure for cancer instead we’re fighting measles outbreaks
Random but I did not know people felt so strongly about the lack of diversity on the show Friends. It never bothered me because (1) NYC is highly segregated by neighborhood and (2) in my experience most friend groups in NYC are homogenous
And the thing is this has long lasting consequences on the ability to get promoted/being negatively perceived as a job hopper. I swear one day when someone asks me in an interview why I’m looking to move I’m going to yell “it’s the racism stupid!”
I just learned today Garth Brooks has 9 albums that have gone diamond. 9! Not sure if I could name one of his songs. But the point is there's lots of stuff that is popular even if you don't know about it
I keep seeing a sign saying “what police do to black men, doctors do to black women” and I understand the sentiment but BW are also victims of police brutality. Don’t erase that
Question for BW on my timeline: if you have fibroids, when you were first diagnosed did your physician give you any practical advice about how to treat them and/or what to do?
A consistent theme in a lot of these poorly written essays on Blackness we’ve seen this month is (1) a desire for white approval which goes in-interrogated by the author and (2) a belief that there’s only one way to be Black and that way is usually a stereotypical one
The lack of coverage from any reputable outlet aloud blogs to step in and spread misinformation. And given the topic of the trial Essence should be embarrassed it had no coverage
