On a Sportsnet panel, analyst Kelly Hrudey calls for the NHL to cancel games tonight. "We need to be more supportive. ... The NHL is missing out.
"I'm disappointed that we're talking about hockey tonight."
Kevin Hayes said in a pregame interview with ESPN that the Bruins have been “amazing” in his family’s time of mourning. He noted that Brad Marchand has played street hockey with Jimmy Hayes’ 2-year-old son, Beau, and spent time in Dorchester with Hayes’ family and friends.
BU goalie Mathieu Caron (a bio major) has the chemical formula for seratonin on his blocker. His mask includes a pride flag to honor some family members and friends.
Asked Brad Marchand what emoji he would put on his stick.
“I would never put an emoji on my stick. I have way more self respect than that. (pause) But I’ll lick a guy.”
Pastrnak lost a bet — his family was playing board games — and had to paint his nails (or shave his legs).
“I kinda like it,” he said. “Might choose a different color next time.”
Swayman on Hug No. 63: "I was a little bummed that (Ullmark) wasn't gonna make the trip, but it was awesome. Bus came in, he was iffy, and I said, 'Come over here.'"
Bussi: “He just waved me in. Very cool experience.”
Jerry York on Jimmy Hayes:
"Of all the kids I've coached, certainly in my top 5 as far as being enjoyable to coach, to hang in the locker room with. His off-ice contributions to our team, I marveled at so many different times."

Chara: “First, I would like to express how good the Carolina Hurricanes are ...They’re a very dangerous team. I just want to congratulate them on going to playoffs and playing us very hard. They’re very well-coached and they work extremely hard.”
One guy you feel for is Taylor Hall, 31, and not just because I saw him broken up outside the Bruins dressing room as we walked in.
Accepted his reduced role. Played great defense. Finished (shot 41 percent in the series). Produced (5-3–8).
Great chance at his first Cup, gone.
Marchand has done plenty of dirty things in his career but this isn’t one of them.
Not his responsibility to alter his path when Liljegren swerves into his lane. 63 has his feet wide to brake before hitting the boards. It’s a puck battle. Play on.
Marchand, informed that Krejci is coming up on 1,000 games (999 tonight):
"What??? I thought he hit that like 20 years ago. He's gotta be the oldest guy to ever do it. You ever seen an 80-year-old ..."
Marchand, asked about Tkachuk's previous comments crossing the line, spins it the other way: "I think the NHL and the media outlets have crossed the line to allow those mics ..."
Called it "very disrespectful" to the NHL-NHLPA agreement ...
Wouldn't say if Tkachuk crossed it.
Jaro Halak’s agent, Allan Walsh, confirms that UFA netminder and Bruins are parting ways. Walsh says Halak is healthy and expects NHL interest come July 28.
Personal note: Been covering sports 22 years and Bruce Cassidy is by far the most generous, genuine, insightful coach I’ve covered at the pro level (college or high school, for that matter). Will miss dealing with him on a daily basis.
Also: got quite a bit out of this roster.
Patrice Bergeron said the Chicago situation is a reminder that "you have to make sure you handle things the right way, and in a timely manner as well. Hockey’s one thing, but obviously there’s more important things in life. You have to prioritize those things.”
Flashback to April 6, 2021, when Jeremy Swayman made his NHL debut in a near-empty Wells Fargo Arena. He and the Bruins go for win No. 63 here tonight.
Ullmark said "it would take a lot" for him to fight.
But he wanted to see Fleury-Binnington.
“I thought it was BS the refs didn’t let them.
“It’s a lost (art). I grew up watching Detroit … Hextall … Tim Thomas … (Tuukka) Rask went after it …”
Bruins: (struggle mightily on PP)
Orlov to Pastrnak: "Imma whip a 50-foot backhand on net, you just tip it perfectly through the five-hole K bruh???"
Pastrnak: "bet"
Writing the Globe's obituary on Jimmy Hayes. Of all the memories and quotes I'm collecting, this one, from Devils VP Pete Albietz, is tough to top:
"Jimmy was a guy who had you laughing before he delivered the punchline."
Bruins locker room:
Marchand flat-out devastated. Both he and Krejci say it's the worst loss of their careers.
Bergeron asked if he was playing through injury: "Of course."
Coyle on verge of tears when asked about coming home to make a Cup run.
Marchand on "not bringing politics" into sports:
"That's one thing people continually mix up. ... That's not what this is about. We're not being political.
"It's about people being equal and being treated the same."
Krug says he misses coming to work and seeing, among other things:
- seeing what David Pastrnak is wearing
- wondering what kind of mood Chris Wagner will be in
- seeing Charlie McAvoy's big smile
- making sense of what's coming out of Jake DeBrusk's mouth
Foligno said he and Bergeron came up with this while waiting for Ullmark and Swayman to do their hug.
“We were trying to look dumb. Two old dads out there.”
