NEW INVESTIGATION: We looked into the tragedy on February 29 when over a hundred died while awaiting aid in northern Gaza. We found evidence that casts doubt on the IDF’s version of events. 1/5

So the Nigerian Federal Govt gave a press conference this morning to reply to our
#Lekkitollgate
investigation. It accuses us of "fake news" and so here is our response: "Our reporting was carefully and meticulously researched, and we stand by it," a CNN spokesperson said.
Huge news out of
#Nigeria
: the judicial panel concluded
#Lekkitollgate
was indeed a massacre and that authorities covered up. It vindicates not only CNN's reporting on the massacre but more importantly, the young people of the
#EndSARS
movement.
CNN EXCLUSIVE INVESTIGATION: What really happened Nika Shahkarami? New witnesses and videos contradict Iran’s claims about the teen protestor’s death. Thread… 1/9
Our latest investigation with
@GianlucaMezzo
@ANPour
#Nika
After our investigation into
#LekkiTollGate
went out, we made sure to monitor the judicial panel today. Turns out, the Nigerian army admitted *for the first time* to having live rounds at the peaceful protest on October 20, 2020.
Read our story here:
Then, at 8:37pm, we found the last known video of Nika. She’s hiding behind cars to avoid detection from police standing on the pavement nearby. Shortly after this is filmed, she was seen being detained and bundled into a police van. 7/9
But Iranian authorities have always denied her death was connected to the protests. With the help of
@1500tasvir
we analysed 50+ videos from that night and spoke to 6 key eyewitnesses which reveal a very different tale regarding her final hours. 3/9
Nika went missing after protests on Sept 20 and was later pronounced dead. She has become one of the most known faces in Iran, and joins a growing list of young Iranian women who have tragically lost their lives in recent weeks. 2/9
The video evidence shows that the 16 year old was at the frontline of the protests, throwing rocks directly at riot police, burning headscarves while standing on a bin. Eyewitnesses said she seemed fearless. 4/9
We're still waiting on a response from the Nigerian authorities to our investigation. We have examined hours of footage and spoken to dozens of eyewitnesses to uncover what really happened at Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.
Videos we’ve geolocated to that time and area show security officers were to the north and south of Nika as well as next to her on the pavement. It means that shortly before she was seen being detained, she had become completely surrounded by police. 8/9
As it gets dark, the police crackdown intensifies and NIka moves away from the protest area, towards Engelab gas station where eyewitnesses saw her making a phone call. 5/9
We geolocated videos to nearby streets showing what appear to be non-uniformed police assaulting and detaining people. One eyewitness told CNN they saw police “hitting women” and putting them in “police vans” 6/9
The Iranian authorities have offered multiple different explanations for her death: first she was thrown off a roof, then it was suicide. They have not responded to our repeated requests for comment and have not commented on whether Nika was ever detained. 9/9

Exclusive: a UN food truck was hit on Feb 5 but CNN has seen correspondence between UNRWA and COGAT confirming the route in advance. Despite this it was still struck by naval gunfire. Satellite imagery shows IDF boats visible after.

It’s arrived! We won an Emmy for our investigations into the Ethiopian conflict. From investigating massacres to uncovering war crimes, it was a year that featured some of the stories I’m most proud of and it couldn’t have been done without the bravery of many, many Ethiopians.
Days after our CNN investigation into the Maryam Dengelat massacre and Amnesty’s report on the Axum massacre, US Secretary of State

calls for the withdrawal of Eritrean & Ethiopian forces from Tigray.

You can find our original investigation here 👇🏻 - It led to the Nigerian government holding a press conference to attack our evidence, calling us "fake news" and "misinformation." Yet now, our reporting is mentioned 37 times in the judicial panel's report.
The joint UN and EHRC report notably did not visit key locations where CNN and others reported on massacres of Tigrayans inc. Axum, Adigrat and Dengelat.
Indeed,
@1500tasvir
have been an incredible resource. None of this would be possible without the bravery of those that helped us gather footage and eyewitnesses. #مهسا_امینی
CNN's investigation on
#NikaShakrami
's final hours, based on eyewitness accounts and open-source images. A big shoutout to
@1500tasvir
for documenting these protests
We gathered evidence from 22 eyewitnesses including exclusive videos that indicate the shooting started earlier than the IDF had claimed. Audio analysis shows it was machine gunfire at 600rpm. In a densely packed area, this risks a high death toll. 2/5
This incident was one of the single biggest mass casualty events of this conflict but it not the only one. The UN has documented two dozen attacks on Palestinians awaiting aid in the last three months alone. 5/5
Our latest
#Ethiopia
investigation: Ethiopian Airlines employees are fleeing the country by stowing away inside the planes they work on. (1/5) w/
@GianlucaMezzo
The IDF’s night-vision drone footage is the only available video with a clear view of what happens - but they have denied CNN’s requests for the full unedited footage. Eyewitnesses filmed on phones in near total darkness, making visual analysis hard. 3/5
Despite this, we found compelling evidence that focused on audio rather than visual analysis, plus the timestamps for when the footage was filmed. In all, it casts doubt on the IDF’s narrative on when and why the gunfire started. 4/5
I discussed the United States’ concerns about the ongoing crisis in Ethiopia’s Tigray region with Prime Minister
@AbiyAhmedAli
today. Action to end hostilities and protect civilians is urgently required. The United States remains ready to assist in resolving the conflict.
Images finally emerge from Dengelat after - like much of Tigray - months of blockade. We published at the weekend a three-month long investigation into the massacre of civilians at Maryam Dengelat at the hands of Eritrean soldiers. You can see the grief in these images.
People gather to mourn the victims of a massacre allegedly perpetrated by Eritrean Soldiers in the village of Dengolat, North of Mekele, the capital of Tigray.

Really odd development here. No USAID investigation has been conducted despite claims by the Ethiopian Herald. Independent investigations ARE needed into these atrocities in
#Tigray
inc. Axum, Dengelat and others.
[1/2] Contrary to a recent report in the Ethiopian Herald about a USAID investigation in Axum, USAID has neither conducted an investigation nor sent a team to investigate the reported events that took place in Axum.
Brave Ethiopian Airlines employees spoke to us about being told to load guns, ammunition - even tanks - onto planes. We are so grateful they trusted us with their stories.
We have heard from countless sources about the ongoing mass arrests of Tigrayans across Ethiopia inc. children, women and the elderly. Extremely concerning.

#Ethiopia
: We are concerned that at least 1000 individuals have been detained over the last couple of weeks as police invoke excessively wide provisions of the state of emergency to arrest, search and detain people:
Ethiopian Govt has responded to our Mahibere Dego investigation by dismissing our geolocation of the video and saying "social media posts and claims cannot be taken as evidence" - think the OSINT community would say differently.
We have a response. Admits the waybills are real yet they somehow didn’t read the ‘military’ bit before ‘refill’. Oh, and they’re billed to the ministry of defence…
Cargo manifests and air waybills show Ethiopian Airlines billed the Ethiopian government hundreds of thousands of dollars to transport military equipment including guns and ammunition on its planes.
CNN has investigated a gruesome video appearing to show Ethiopian soldiers carrying out extrajudicial executions of unarmed men in Tigray, Ethiopia. This is what we found:
Absolutely heartbreaking scenes: young Afghan girls - as young as 9 - being sold into marriage so their families can eat. Extraordinary access and reporting by

Eritrean soldiers are blocking and looting food aid in Ethiopia's war-hit Tigray region, according to government documents obtained by AFP, stoking fears of starvation deaths as fighting nears the six-month mark
No evidence has been found of Russian claims that the hospital had been cleared and a Ukrainian battalion moved into the building and yet still after the attack the disinformation continued.
We’ve spent the last three months investigating a massacre in the village of Dengelat in Ethiopia’s Tigray region between November 30 - December 2, 2020.

"The aid workers had their hands over their heads when they were shot."
This story is horrifying.
While the world focuses on Ukraine, war continues to be waged on the people of Tigray and aid workers are being killed for simply doing their jobs.
The Biden administration is calling a news report that Ethiopian Air ferried arms to Eritrea a grave allegation, and noted that Ethiopia could be hit with U.S. sanctions if conflict in the Tigray region persists
Exclusive modelling by CNN supported by eyewitness testimony suggests that it would have been obvious and visible to the naked eye that the Mariupol Maternity Hospital was in use by civilians including pregnant mothers before it was hit.
We geolocated photos of burnt skeletal remains, clothing, ID cards and bullet casings to the same site as the massacre. The bulk of the evidence is too graphic to share but you can see here this is the same ridge.
The shuttling back and forth of these weapons took place primarily in November 2020, when multiple massacres in Tigray also occurred, including Axum and Dengelat, which we previously reported on:
We compared these documents and testimonies with Flightradar24 and saw several flights appeared but the routes disappeared when they approached the Ethiopian border.
Our wonderful team were nominated for

The shocking state of the remains, the denial of the right to a proper burial and the fresh footage emerging from the massacre must only be adding to the pain of loved ones in Mahibere Dego. Yet still the Ethiopian Government dismisses this event.
We investigated a video showing a massacre in
#Tigray
. We geolocated it to a hillside outside of Mahibere Dego, near Axum. And spoke to families who believe their relatives are featured in the video.
Using the extended clip of the Al Jazeera footage, we sent the gunfire audio for analysis by Rob Maher. He concluded the gap between the crack and blast sounds indicated the gunmen were between 177-197 meters from where Abu Akleh was shot.
Eyewitnesses told us not only that the attack felt targeted and there were continued shoots as they tried to retrieve Abu Akleh’s body. In the words of eyewitness Shatha Hanaysha: “they wanted to kill us”

🚨 New evidence on the killing of
@AlJazeera
reporter Shireen Abu Akleh by our Forensic Architecture Investigation Unit &
@ForensicArchi
. Our advanced spatial technologies establish that Israel's report on the incident is false & deliberately misleading.
Looking at geolocated social media videos from the surrounding area, we found IDF trucks located within that 200m area. We found no one else within this radius.
We spoke again to the family of Alula, who featured in our first report and whose family saw him in the massacre videos. They confirmed they found his ID card among the remains. His mother is inconsolable.
New reports and footage emerging from
#Tigray
of extrajudicial killings, murders of civilians, sexual and gender-based violence, and forced displacement are deeply disturbing.
