Trying not to be grumpy but I’m not best pleased this morning at being told off by an “Exec” with a £500 briefcase for “encouraging” a rough sleeper by buying him breakfast. So I’m buying us both breakfast...and we’re both eating it together on the street. People need to eat. Grr
A number of us have been talking about
#mentalhealth
impact of COVID-19. Working across a number of colleagues we've been working on a community of practice. Here's a summary from research I've been able to look at of current impacts as a bit of a ready reckoner.
#publichealth
If you were mixing socially on Christmas Day, in contact with someone with Covid and got infected, you may have no idea yet you’ve even picked it up. But you will be most infectious around New Year’s Eve. Are you mixing for New Year? are you sure you won’t be infecting people?
A v unexpected surprise in today’s post!
@FPH
@ADPHUK
@MaggieRae20
reading the letter had me in tears, especially given endless hours of service Maggie Rae has put in. Thank you a million times.
#publichealth
(PS remind me not to play poker with you lot. You kept that v quiet!)
Big shout out to my
#publichealth
colleagues this evening across the nation. We will win this. This is what we trained for. This is what we do. Keep on being amazing .
#COVID19
Tonight I’m clapping for the key workers - delivery people, posties, supermarket workers, drivers, teachers, school nurses, social care, waste collectors and hundreds, hundreds more workers alongside the NHS . You are all amazing 👏🏻👏🏻

This month I rack up 6 years in remission from
#cancer
. There is life even after a Grade IVB
#lymphoma
. And the feeling in my feet has fully come back too! What present do I get for 6 years in remission? - the ordinary miracle of being around to enjoy life. Deo Gratias!
Wow! What a privilege to collect this. And I got to make every publichealth person in the room stand. They’ll get me for that.a million thank yous to our wonderful local government family
First day off after 32 full days in a row working. thanks to colleagues standing in today. I have to say
@sciencemuseum
is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon off. Great cup of tea too. New maths and medicine galleries brilliant .
firefighters, Vol sector, care workers, registrars, waste collection and disposal, highways, maintenance,
#publichealth
staff, children’s services, schools, social care, money advisors. And MANY more . Every bit as vital as our
#NHS
to get us through this crisis.
#councilscan
Caught up with colleague today who kept trying and failing to quit smoking. I persuaded her a year ago to switch to
#vaping
. She’s back to cycling/swimming, no longer breathless and has found the money to fund her Master’s degree. folk like this are just amazing.
#publichealth
I’m sure
#publichealth
colleagues will join me this evening in wishing our
@CMO_England
and Duncan Selbie CEO of
@PHE_uk
well. We send you our love, our thanks for your Leadership and our hopes for a speedy recovery. There’s proper science behind this get well card thing(Err....)
Now is the time to practice the measures we have been asked to, with great care, as an act of love to our neighbours, our loved ones, ourselves, our NHS, Care and essential workforces in slowing and defeating this virus. We can do this!
#COVID19
#publichealth
Please don’t buy more food than you need. Food retailers are NOT closing. Deliveries continue daily. There are plentiful supplies. If you panic buy, folk on tight budgets may not be able to buy what they need. please keep being kind and brilliant, and don’t panic buy
#herts
Dismayed by suggestion that folk working in care homes are “low skilled”. That’s not a picture I recognise. They do complex and vital work and are among the most skilled professionals I have ever met. If you really value our important
#NHS
you will value vital
#socialcare
equally
Question today on a webinar “I’ve seen people vaccinated but getting covid. So what’s the point of getting vaccinated? Answer “The point is they’re not in hospital.”
For the last few weeks Alistair in my team has been identifying folk who are homeless/rough sleepers across
#Herts
and working across HCC, hostels,
#homeless
agencies and
#NHS
colleagues to get them vaccinated. Yesterday the team went into action!

Folks a word about behaviour on social media. Disagree with my views all you like. We can be respectful. Swear at me, attack me or my identity or be a rude or discriminatory churl and I’ll block and if needs be report you. Zero tolerance. Let’s make twitter a more adult space
We’ve already seen some noise develop around the shift to vaccinate as many people with one dose initially and extend the gap to the vaccination schedule of two doses 28 days apart. Having read as much of the science as I can find I for one support this. And here’s why
Today’s leader I want
#publichealth
colleagues to recognise is
@DrChrisGibbons
. His work on data modelling has been enormously helpful to a number of us. He generates nothing but respect in people I hear speak of him. An amazing member of the amazing
@felly500
team
Very welcome news from DHSC that
#publichealth
services wont be moved from local govt. And role of DsPH & LAs to be strengthened. Now we must turn to the job at hand; work together for better outcomes, not get distracted by reorganisation debate .
@ChrisCEOHopson
@KateAlvanley
Nothing justifies the way
@CMO_England
has been treated.
@metpoliceuk
need to act decisively on this. If we tolerate this behaviour towards people doing their jobs, sooner or later we will see much worse.

directors of public health support our CMO
I don’t mind if folk want to disagree with me on Twitter. But please don’t just swear or be insulting or use hate speech. Because a) I can’t actually learn from your points or views if all you’re doing is throwing abuse and b) I’ll just block you if you keep it up. Zero tolerance

Masks. Are. Not m. A. Restrictive. Measure. They prevent restrictions. If we all wear them on public transport and in crowded places as well as ventilate indoor spaces cases WILL come down. Little steps now avoid bigger ones with higher case rates.

I think I’ve reached an even deeper level of sad. I’ve just had a book on mathematical modelling for epidemiology arrive and I’m actually genuinely excited at the prospect of an evening reading it 🙄
Really pleased that today our local contact tracing system for
#COVID19
went live across
#Hertfordshire
. This means local people at risk of Covid will be contacted by local people. As it should be. .
#publichealth
I’d add two further layers of 1) cleaning and 2) self-isolation when positive or symptomatic in here but this graphic very neatly explains why we need multiple layers of protection to suppress the virus

Sweden’s herd immunity” strategy that wasn’t. A nation which has moved closer to the German model as their cases rise again. There are useful lessons for us all from Sweden eg about consensus, trust, balance and sustainability. Herd immunity isn’t one of them. Via

Ive had a fair few questions about the coverage on Thursday and Friday of the new study in
@TheLancetInfDis
on household transmission of
#Covid19
despite people being double vaccinated.
Amidst the hysteria about
#vaping
some key points to remember.
#publuchealth
1. The American deaths and hospitalisations are due to people vaping oil in illicit products. Thenoul causes lipoid pneumonia, not vaping by itself....1/.
Before the misinformation starts to circulate that the vaccine is failing because double-vaxxed people are being admitted to hospital, let's just check the facts....
A thread on the
@AstraZeneca
Oxford Vaccine. I've had the 1st dose of mine, and I fully intend to have the 2nd. I've read the data carefully, and am reassured that yesterday's announcement is a sign of our

safety system working well and taking a precautionary approach
This week I'm celebrating 5 years being in remission and finishing all cancer treatment. (Rituximab - *shiver*) So I think it has to be the best gelato I can find on Saturday :)
#anyexcuse
Ice cream is 5th Anniversary, right? 😬🙃
Face masks are not a restrictive measure, they are a preventive one. And this latest consensus statement summarises the evidence that they remain an important part of controlling COVID19
One of the things I leave in Hertfordshire, and one of the things I’m very proud of is our quit smoking and tobacco team. Since we first launched 12 years ago, Stoptober has helped over 2.5 million smokers to make a quit attempt.
More Amazing work by
@HCTNHS
colleagues. Today at Robertson House Stevenage they reached an amazing milestone 100,000 vaccinations at the site and 500,000 across their 17 Mass Vaccination sites! Loving this! Go Team!!! 🙏🥇🏆👏🏻🏅🙏🥇🌟🌟

rates are NOT up 200% since lockdown. Real time suicide surveillance data shows this is NOT the case. We don’t need to wait for coroner results to know this hasn’t happened. Please don’t support this dangerous myth.

Early figures from several countries, inc England, show no rise in suicide post-lockdown. But we have to maintain support & vigilance.

Brilliant thread. Basically the idea that covid vaccines are causing excess deaths is nonsense. This detailed analysis shows that, and also shows what is causing excess deaths
Based on these observations, we have summarised the possible causes of non-covid excess mortality into this diagram, showing excess deaths from respiratory disease, other non-COVID causes and those from COVID-19.

departments deal with “unexpected” threats to your health continuously. These threats will be here long after Covid goes. So should public health teams.

Thanks to so many who sent wishes, prayers & mass cards, to Fr Jinesh for a beautiful mass and to mum’s fellow villagers who stood in the cold at the cemetery or at your doors as we walked past. This factory worker’s son is proud of mum, my village and grateful beyond words. 🙏
My thoughts and prayers, as every day, with everyone who is unwell with
#COVID19
. Including this evening our Prime Minister having just heard the news. Wishing you all well, and praying very much for your recovery.
Yesterday I had several parents tell me about how much they valued the help of their Health Visitor. Intervention stopped hospital admission. The NHS needs what

So frustrating to read this. 30 cases of clotting amongst 5m Europeans vaccinated, no proven link to vaccine. How many people develop blood clots each year, vaccine or not?

There are a number of us who will never forget how

We have donated vital health and medical supplies to Herts County Council to aid their COVID-19 preparations, including Personal Protective Equipment which will be used by NHS and social care teams and a ventilator which will enable a hospital to treat an extra critical patient.
Can we stop this “depression / mental health issues are a choice” nonsense? It’s untrue, scientific nonsense, pernicious and blames people when we should be understanding, and affirming. I am proud to work with and alongside many people with lived experience of MH issues…

I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve spent a few hours or feeling very,very sorrowful (understatement) that I won’t see my family at Christmas for 2nd time only in my life (last time I was 400 miles from them in hospital with cancer) BUT....

Thank you to over 50 people who contacted me this evening after

We must be careful not to “interventionise” solutions to

at individual level like a clinical model. The more we invest in clinical models the less we use existing social infrastructure and capacity and the more cost we build into doing it

YOU ARE AMAZING! 🥇🏆

“The public health grant in England has been cut by £700m between 2014/15 & 2019/20, yet in all other UK nations funding has either remained stable or increased in some elements. We're calling for re-investment in prevention: ”
Some thoughts on
@TheMarmotReview
#Marmot2020
The Wanless report in 2002 on future health argued for systematic approaches to reducing inequalities. Governments response in 2004 under John Reid was the White Paper Choosing Health focusing largely on individual “lifestyles”. /1
Government data shows 3.35m people have tested positive fOR SARS-CoV-2 in England since 2020. And 3.55m have had first dose of vaccine. Cumulative first doses of vaccine now outnumber cases. A sign of hope. Not a magic bullet. But a welcome sign of hope
As this diagram from
@jburnmurdoch
shows, social care funding hasnt kept pace with the population. (Nor has
#publichealth
funding.) We simply won’t exit a this continuing wave of preventable burden on our NHS till social care and preventive public health are properly funded

This is important. If you haven’t had the vaccine because either you’ve been infected and think you don’t need vaccine, or you think “natural immunity is better” this variant presents a high risk of reinfection.

A sub headline might be can we all please remember Vaccines are not an anti viral cloak of invincibility ? They reduce transmission. They don’t necessarily stop it
