Doctors who cannot see or refuse to see that Israel is committing genocide:
Physician, heal thyself.
Your duty to your profession demands that you see this genocide clearly -with your heart, your intellect, your healing spirit: This is a deliberate wounding of an entire people.
Moms in this country aren't going to *ever* forget how govts gave them the option of either losing their jobs or placing their kids at risk of infection, hospitalization, death, and long covid.

Is this in reference to the young child who asked if she was being taken to a cemetery? (She had thought she had died?) Just - thank you for sharing beauty amid so much horror <3 so glad she is alive. so glad for everyone alive and so heartbroken for everyone killed!
"There is no need for any one of us to serve in the IDF. The IDF should not exist. The state of Israel should not exist,” says former IDF soldier and now anti-Zionist organizer Meital Yaniv.
So Elections Canada apparently does not have a vaccination mandate for its employees - one of them reached out to me because her colleague is an antivaxxer. They are seeing hundreds of people. Can someone explain this to me. How is this happening.

Extremely disappointed to see that every single unmasked face at the go bus terminal this morning is south asian.
Provincial messaging to remove masking will absolutely disproportionately affect marginalized communities.
With rising numbers, I would not send my kids back to school unless good fitting masks were required indoors for all, they could prove the ventilation was good (CO2) with everyone present, and they had HEPA filtration. Delta is highly contagious and kids are the biggest target.
@Sflecce
It's you. You are the hardship. You are paying them $39k on average when you make over $165K. You even got a raise of $15K in the crucial pandemic years. Come on. Pay these workers fairly.
Headsup that the way Ryan Imgrund discusses race as an axis of covid risk is inadequate. How he talks to women of colour online is atrocious and maybe you care about that, maybe you don't. Plenty of people can do math. But few can contextualise it in the context of people's lives
I used to think ryan imgrund was alright. Then he out of nowhere treated *several women* like crap, including myself. Then I learned it was part of a long-standing pattern. When well-intentioned men keep tagging him, it becomes clear to me you guys really don't get it. :/
Two people came up and asked me where there was a bathroom/starbucks. I was like..."are you with the truckers?" And they said "god no!" And held up their anti nazi signs and we had a good convo about how ridiculous these antivaxxer asshats are. And I walked them to a coffee shop
Lol this pandemic is making me realise that the idea of women taking bcp is so normalized despite less risky procedures for men (RISUG) bc we have entirely normalised the idea that women can be at higher risk of clots but we dare not inconvenience the male gender at all.
As a former student of Dr. Fisman, what made me smile instantly even in *this* piece which confront his actions, was: "I’ve defended Fisman before, and believe he did this out of principle, because it’s how he does everything."
Now, read it again:
It's how he does everything.

It is disturbing that we are encouraged to view institutions (hosp+schools) as outside the definition of community - this leads ppl to think community based transmission is limited to individual actions, while leaving institutions free to do as they please with 0 accountability.

As someone who writes short scifi stories, here is a plot for a dystopian world: the position of epidemiologist becomes entirely removed from prevention. Models are assimilated explicitly into political analyses of how much death is acceptable. The threshold of acceptance is high
@EM_RESUS
Idk why exactly but the whole thread made me incredibly angry and resentful haha bc women are clearly ok with being keepers of men despite being dismissed and ignored for our concerns about their health, and also, clearly, men never care this much about our health.
The way family docs have been cut out of this is really not ok. In dt Toronto, many pharmacists work with hypermarginalized pts so this isn't to discount their work. But family docs could have really, really helped. Another way this pandemic has been mismanaged.
@l_stone
@DanyaalRaza
@sarahrimmington
I asked: why isn't Ontario involving family doctors more vaccine rollout? (There's only 1 mention of them in latest briefing deck.)
Reply was that family doctors play important role in getting vaccines to some hard-to-reach populations, but nothing about expanding their role.

Just to be clear, if we can afford to spend $290,000,000 to host five 2026 World Cup soccer games in Toronto, we can also afford to provide safe, affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness in Toronto...It's really a question of our priorities!
if you know where my aging grandma can get a third dose in Ontario please let me know. Once again, I see that congregate-dwelling elders are prioritised but elders in community are not. The vast majority of BIPOC elders are in community. *stares*.

So disappointed in Nili Kaplan-Myrth's horrifying stance against free speech and vile equation of peaceful pro-palestinian protests to hamas.
If you see a diverse crowd protest genocide and think "terrorists! They're going to kill me!", your racism is the problem.

for making every Health Trends&Surveillance student not only think hard, but insist on innovation in approach. It was worth it and made me reflect a lot on how much I have yet to learn re: practical application.
We are headed for a "children of men" scenario bc women are sick of being asked to choose btw our careers and our families. Fuck around and find out, I guess. Birth rates will continue to decline bc society keeps insisting we shelve our career dreams and we will obv keep refusing
HAHAHAHA instead of actual vaccination mandates, they have "one use pencils" and must wipe down everything every 15 minutes. Hygiene theatre. I have words I cannot say on twitter but both hindi and french are colourful languages.
bottom line: when I go to vote, I deserve to be in a COVID-free environment, and not have to deal with an employee who is unvaccinated. People's health should be protected when we vote.
Leftist pretender men who secretly hate women of colour? That's a thing. Trust us when we tell you - bc we have had a lifetime of developing that radar and if you don't see it, it is v much bc you haven't had to develop that sense of "woah this dude is bad news"
Hey so keep your kids home from school this jan if you can. I hate this advice bc only the rich can afford to do it. And yet. It's the choice id make if i had kids and could afford to keep them home.

Hey, the whole "hamas is responsible for israel committing genocide" was so mid october 2023 which at this point, is 3 years ago. Join us in real time where the world at minimum wants ceasefire and at max: from the river to the sea, palestine will be free, mmmk? K. Cool.

Thank you. It has been so triggering for so many BIPOC and Indigenous communities around the world to see this obvious, disgusting colourism and supremacist genocide of children. I feel brown-coded children don't matter as much as white-coded children to western leaders.

In light of the stay-at-home order just announced, we have decided to restrict our services this week then close our store April 12th - May 6th.
Yes, the new rules permit us to open for takeout but let's be real: ice cream is not really an essential service.
@NoLore
...why? :/ i was driven in high school - we lived way too far away from school - and taking the bus early in the day was a pain. Most of us bussed back in the evening. But there is no way in sprawling ontarian suburbia that i was gonna bike 10km to school and back every day haha.
part of the issue is that unlike vinay prasad, imgrund isn't consistently wrong. It is just that when he is, he can't take criticism - he blocked me for suggesting hardest-hit communities need to be prioritised for vaccines -something the science table also stated at the time.
Keltie asks, rightfully, what's the point of this lockdown? 1984 taught us beware those who change the definition of words while using them. Take note: in ON, lockdown now means "we acknowledge feelings* of alarm but will not meaningfully change anything in practice"
Honestly I have to think of these new lockdown measures in ON as an April Fools joke. Not changing retail restrictions, not closing schools, and no essential worker protections....what is the point of a lockdown if you aren’t targeting where the highest burden of disease is?
it also sends a weird message that these facilities are somehow magically or spiritually "protected". While I could wax poetic on what God does or doesn't do, it would be really helpful if religious leaders stepped up and *did it instead*. bc that's their day job, last I checked
Perhaps the most fruitless, pointless, idiotic conversation is one where you realise people truly view risk response to covid 19 as a personal choice rather than a collective endeavour.
@drmwarner
@fordnation
I want to cry for brown and black people in our city. Leadership does not care about the fact that so many of us are in essential work. I am thankful every day that I am not, but to know my community is suffering really hurts. Your words mean a lot Dr Warner.
I don't want kids at this point bc:
1) i don't trust that my partner, if a man, will be given time off work to look after them as much as me - so i expect the weight of that responsibility to fall on my shoulders
I love her response. But I am angry that Palestinian courage has to be filtered through her.

The other issue is: someone like vinay prasad clearly aligns with the libertarian right - it is ideologically obvious. Imgrund pretends at leftist politics but will chucky-doll turn on you in no time flat. The things he has said to women of colour made our spidey sense go off.
The performative washing down of chairs and purell stations at covid19 testing centres contributed to misinformation. No air filtration but this bs? Fomite transmission control is performance art. It enrages me bc it deceives the public and creates anxiety around the wrong thing
Triage training is starting. None of us trained to not be able to offer care to those who need it due to lack of resources. As a PICU doc I need to be prepared to potentially triage the care I offer kids. Triage training is starting—-Let that sink in

Is it? Oh dont tell me someone seriously thinks of this as an example of misogyny. They must actually clutch pearls then. 😒 or is it "problematic" bc it "discriminates" against the rich and a rich person has it worked out that it's an example of classism? Is it anti-clam?!
It leaves PH professionals at a loss bc on the one hand, we are told to "reach marginalised communities" and "improve trust" but now, all I can tell them is that the provincial govt is wrong and that their bullshit guidance to repeal masking mandates cannot be trusted.

I find it really hard to explain to the average non-science person what is meant by herd immunity - people don't have the bio knowledge to really get it right away. I found this article helpful to pass around to folks - Prof Tuite breaks it down v nicely:
Lol saw some guy complaining on twitter that fisman and warner blocked him and how he was mad about that bc "they don't control the covid convo!" And how it was "censorship". i gotta say if both fisman and warner block a guy? You might as well block him too. 😂 preemptively.

Ok I couldn't resist: gathering in a religious institution in the middle of O is tantamount to spiritual *hubris*. And you can take that biblically, dharmically, sharia-esque, judaically, or in any other way. But hubris is what it is! This holiday, try to avoid a smiting, jeez.
@DrKateTO
I thought about it and realised i don't want kids bc i feel society is asking me to choose btw kids and a career and won't even promise to care *for kids*. So. Easy choice, really. It takes a village and we don't *have that*. What we have is "normalize covid in schools". Cool.

:) the world stands with palestine. What Israel has done has not assured the destruction of Palestine. It has ensured that the people of the world no longer recognize it as a state.
The word "Israel" drowns in the river of Palestinian blood Netanyahu created.
Rhodesia, rhodesia.
I don't think Israel has thought about the spiritual ramifications of genocide.
I don't mean divine intercession, but something far more basic: gravity acts on an apple and it falls. A thief begins to think how others could steal as well as he, and grows fearful of theft.
As many Palestinians have now been killed as Bosniak muslims in the Srebrenica genocide. Israel is comitting genocide. The framing of self-defense is manipulative and ignores Isreael's role as instigator in 75 years of occupation, apartheid, illegal settlement, and genocide.
@QueenMab87
and relatedly, a lot of scholars have been unable to make the links between islamophobia and antisemitism - how they both operate so so similarly to justify genocide.

Let it be known that quite possibly no one stood more arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder, in protesting the genocide of palestinians than Jews! The courage that it took to do this *is ancient* and it is powerful. They know what "never again" means.
@rafaelshimunov
Yeah we need to talk about the... weaponization of fear. No other racialised community does this and we are targeted all the time. I am at a loss as to how to address it meaningfully.
I resent deeply that "I have a partner" works better to deter men intent on pursuing me than just saying "I'm not interested". my partner doesn't own me, and men 'trying it' are answerable to me first, not my partner.
If your solution is to let privileged wfh folks have access to a vax with a better safety profile while pushing a more risky vax to more vulnerable people who may not receive info on vitt symptoms and who may not be taken srsly at a hospital, your pandemic response is bullshit.
I was just talking about it with a friend the other day. Time is of the essence in PH strategy. You cannot sit on numbers. You have to disseminate info and act.
@DFisman
ON-specific but still preprint: "In both childcare and primary school settings, each doubling of class size from 8 to 15 to 30 more than doubled the outbreak size and student-days lost, by factors of 2-5, respectively 2.5-4.5, depending on the scenario."
