Thank you Coleman Hawkins 🧡
Thank you Terrence Shannon Jr 💙
Thank you Marcus Domask 🧡
Thank you Quincy Guerrier 💙
Thank you Justin Harmon 🧡
Thank you Max Williams 💙
What a season🏆
Luka Garza in 2020-21, averages 24 & 8, the media:
“OMG, GIVE HIM THE NPOY NOW, THIS IS OVER”
Kofi Cockburn in 2021-22, averaging 22 & 12, the media:
“….”
It cannot be overstated how incredible Jayden Epps was to end that game.
For a FRESHMAN to hit that three, and then proceeded to knock down two FTs with the game on the line is honestly unbelievable.
ICE 🥶 IN 🥶 HIS 🥶 VEINS
Trent Frazier & Da’Monte Williams stuck with this program through all the ups and downs, and left their final home game of their careers at the SFC Big Ten Champs..
🥲🧡
Refs to Kofi:
“Sorry we don’t give you more foul calls, it’s just so hard to ref someone your size!”
Refs to Edey:
“If anyone touches you, you get the call, pal, don’t worry. It’s unfair how big you are! Also, feel free to toss people to the ground if needed!”
I feel sick to my stomach for Trent Frazier. If I could talk to him, I would tell him not to hang his head for one second. He has not looked himself with this eye, but what he has done for this program is beyond words.
You hung banners, and you helped turn this program around.
One thing I will never question with Coleman Hawkins is his effort. This guys cares and he gives his all.
Keep your head up, Coleman. Make the best choice for you this off-season, but we’d love to see you run it back.
I don’t need to state the obvious, this isn’t the result we wanted, especially in this fashion.
This is still a successful season.
First Elite 8 in 19 years, B1G Tournament Champions, and a group of guys that was very easy to root for.
Thank you for the season, guys 👏
Coleman Hawkins, on his livestream, said negative comments from fans on social media have been 100x worse than anything Brad Underwood has ever said to him or a teammate.
So I think we can drop the whole “Brad is a big meanie” discussion.
Illinois has the *potential* for a top-7 talented, hugeeeee & athletic starting lineup next season if the pieces fall into place.
Now, this will have some speculation to it, but:
6’3” Skyy Clark
6’7” RJ Melendez
6’6” Terrence Shannon Jr.
6’10” Coleman Hawkins
7’0” Kofi
The narrative before the Illinois vs Iowa State game..
“Iowa State is
#1
in the country on KenPom over the last month, including UConn. They could’ve easily of been the 4th 1-seed.”
The narrative now..
“Least talented 2-seed in some time”
Yeah, sure 😂
College Gameday crew just said they LOVED the attempt by the Orange Krush to get into the Iowa game and the whole thing was blown out of proportion.
Glad to see intelligence prevailed on National Television instead of the “OMG IT’S FRAUD” like the Iowa fans think.
The dual center formula has been a major part of UConn's success over the past two seasons.
Huskies will go in 2024-25 with Samson Johnson and Michigan transfer Tarris Reed, who may remind some in Storrs of a young Alex Oriakhi.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Brad Underwood hit an absolute grandslam on this transfer class.
Domask, Guerrier, and Harmon are all so, so good.
What Brad Underwood has done for what was a bottom-dwelling Illini Program has been remarkable.
2x B1G Tournament Champions
1x B1G Regular Season Champions
1x Elite 8 (and counting)
Most wins in the B1G over the last 5 years
That’s a winning culture 🏆
People don’t often call Kofi clutch, but this is what he did today..
Michigan State down 67-64 with 3 min left, Kofi makes a layup.
Michigan State down 69-67 with 2 min left, Kofi makes hook shot
Michigan State down 71-69 with 1 min 30 left, Kofi hit both FTs
Clutch. NPOY.
Easy to get lost in the mix of this game, but how about Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn hitting two 3PT’s in a critical stretch of the game.
Played some hounding defense and looked calm on the biggest stage.
Illinois Basketball when Ayo Dosunmu & Trent Frazier got here:
🗑
Illinois Basketball as they leave:
NCAA 1-seed,
#2
AP Top 25, Big Ten Tourney Champs, most quad-1 wins in the country, & nationally relevant again.
Sure, we wanted more..but still a success
THANK YOU 🧡
Trent Frazier HAMMERED on the deciding drive… no call
Absolutely pathetic display by the refs tonight. Not to take anything away from OSU, Branham and Liddell were awesome, but my lord was that bad.
Do better
@bigten
If Kofi chooses to go pro tomorrow, as many think, I hope he exceeds expectations and finds his way on an NBA roster.
Kofi knows he isn’t the current NBA mold, but he has a lot of self-belief and I truly hope he can do it!
Stay or leave, he’s forever an Illini legend 🧡
Kofi Cockburn averaged 21 & 11 on the 1st Place team in the Big Ten.. no Big Ten POY or NPOY
Zach Edey averaging 22 & 13 on the 1st place team in the Big Ten.. called the runaway Big Ten POY & NPOY
Has there been another college player as taken for granted as Kofi Cockburn?
Learn to appreciate Brad Underwood.
Yes, we want the success in March, but being a program that is now consistently in the top-25 is not something to take for granted.
Sounds like there won’t be an “official score” for the secret scrimmage today between Illinois vs Kansas, but word is both teams played neck-and-neck for the duration of the game. TSJ stood out as the best player on the court.
Buy stock in this team now, they are the real deal
In his second 5v5 NBA Combine game, Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn goes for..
15 PTS (6/7 FG), 11 REB, & 2 STL
I would say this has been a solid week for the big fella. Hope he gets a chance!
Not playing Ayo DOES NOT help this Bulls team.
Yes, he’s a rookie. He’s also the best defender outside Caruso and will play with every ounce of energy he has.
This coaching staff needs to wake up.
Illinois is now the
#2
ranked offense in the country, per KenPom
We can gripe on the defense, but enjoy this team while you can.. you won’t see many offenses this good in your lifetime.
Dalton Knecht
21.1 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.8 APG, 46.5 FG%
Terrence Shannon Jr.
23.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 47.0 FG%
Spin it any way you wish, TSJ is the second-best player in the country.
Illinois lands its first major target in the Transfer Portal in 6'6" G/F Marcus Domask from SIUC.
The former Wisconsin Mr. Basketball isn't just a sharpshooter, but a "do-all", playmaking guard that can stuff the stat-sheet.
Averaged 16.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG, & 3.8 APG last season.
What a rookie season for Ayo Dosunmu
Exceeded expectations all year, made the Rising Stars game, was consistently ranked in the top-10 rookies by the NBA…all this as the 38th pick in the draft.
Next year, look out. Forever an Illini 🐐
I know the Big Ten COY will likely go to Greg Gard (who is a phenomenal), but man, can’t say enough about what Brad Underwood was able to overcome this year.
Lost his two primary assistants, had surprise transfers, built a new staff, all the injuries..
STILL B1G CHAMPS 🏆
This blown call changed the entirety of the game
And yes, Illinois played poorly and shot themselves in the foot too many times, but the point still stands..
A blown call changed the entirety of the game
@EasyE2432
There are too many weirdos on social media. They’ll say just about anything online, but would never in person.
Keep your head and keep balling. You’re one of the best!
I’m sorry, but two games in a row now Ty Rodgers barely plays in the second half and it makes ZERO sense.
He has been good and is a + defender & rebounder, two things we need
Going 8-4 this season when pre-season expectations were so low for this team is a MAJOR success.
Is it frustrating we had so many opportunities to clinch the West and failed? Yes, absolutely.
But you can still smile knowing this team is bowling and heading the right direction
This is absolutely MASSIVE
The Tim Anderson & Orlando Antigua recruiting/ development duo will be one of the best in the country.
Tim has worked with NBA guards, and we all know what Antigua has done with bigs.
Upper-echelon staff at Illinois.
In Terrence Shannon Jr.’s absence, Marcus Domask, Coleman Hawkins, & Quincy Guerrier have looked like stars, while Ty Rodgers and Justin Harmon have blossomed into elite role players.
With a potential First Team All American likely coming back, this Illinois team is loaded.
New Illini commit Jake Davis played AAU ball with Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn in high-school, very cool.
Some familiarity, chemistry, and continuity for two soon-to-be sophomore's at Illinois
I see a lot of the national media guys trying to make sense of this Illinois squad right now, I think perhaps all of us underestimated how good some of these guys are.
This version of Hawkins is All-B1G
This version of Domask is All-B1G
And Guerrier isn’t far behind.
Depth.
This is the most disappointed I’ve been in this team this year.
Losing games? Fine. But getting blown out while lacking anything resembling effort is not.
Honestly in disbelief.
John Beilein just said Coleman Hawkins is one of the most talented players he has ever seen in the conference.
That’s high praise from someone who has seen some talent in his coaching career.
Ayo Dosunmu tonight in a win over the Miami Heat:
17 Points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3/6 3PT
Ran the PG position beautifully..
PAY THIS MAN SOME MONEY 🔥
Fans who never played at the level of guys like Terrence Shannon Jr. and Coleman Hawkins will never truly know what a mature decision they just made.
Both would’ve been drafted. Their dream within reach.. but no guarantees means returning can make more sense.
I applaud them.
I’m not saying RJ Melendez is Johnny Davis or Keegan Murray, but watch for this dude to take a massive sophomore leap.
FEARLESS. Every big stage he has been thrown into, he thrives. Long, athletic, smart, beautiful jumpshot..
Star in the making
UConn and Illinois are probably two of the most individually talented teams in the country, top-to-bottom.
Shannon, Coleman, Domask
Vs
Newton, Spencer, Clingan
And about 2-3 more guys on each team that can give you 10+ points.
