. Opinions are my own, but should be everyone else's.
In an unprecedented move, the Shelby County Election Commission has suspended posting election tape results at polling locations. This is a decision that endangers the democratic process by eliminating any form of transparency. (1/2)
Every year Republican Amy Weirich has been DA of Shelby County, violent crime has gone up.
She will say we can't try reform, because we must keep people safe.
I say what she's doing, ain't working.
We Need Reform.
Not 8 more years of the same.
This case should never have been brought in the first place. But it's reassuring to know that, after international press coverage, a court-ordered reversal, & months of sustained public protest, Amy Weirich will eventually do the right thing. (Sarcasm)
I want to offer the condolences of both my office and myself personally to the family of
#ElizaFletcher
. To lose someone so young and vital is a tragedy, but to have it result from a senseless act of violence is unimaginable. 1/4
My team will be monitoring these developments closely and hope the commission reverses it's course and allows the tapes to be posted at polling sites. (2/2)
We need to stop wasting time prosecuting marijuana, which is no more dangerous than alcohol, and refocus on violent crime. That’s true on both sides of our state's border with Arkansas, which many people cross in both directions daily. 1/2
Today is the last day to register to Vote for the August Election in Tennessee. If you are 17 years old, but will be 18 before August 4th, you can register. If you are 18 and over, you can register.
You can easily register with this link:
No A/C. No heat. No running water. Bedbugs. Constant fear of criminal assault due to lack of security. These are just some of the conditions tenants face due to out-of-state corporate absentee slumlords. The DA's office could do so much more to make low-income tenants safe.
Election Day is TOMORROW! Tennessee law (TCA 2-1-106) entitles you to three full paid hours off from work to go vote. But you must notify your boss BY NOON TODAY that you plan to take that time off.
Know your rights!
"Mulroy takes office Sept. 1. He said his top priority is consulting with staff to develop strategies to combat violent crime, which is a persistent problem in Memphis."

I am so honored to be supported by criminal justice reform advocate
@JohnLegend
. He is a great voice for reform, and I am truly grateful for his voice (as both a singer and as an advocate).
As soon as they were available, Steve's 96 year-old mother proudly displayed her son's Campaign sign all the way down in her yard in Pensacola, Florida.
She was finally ready to take it down, but not before taking a picture of Steve with it first.
“'Somebody could take as long as 10 minutes just to cast their vote,' Mulroy said. 'If that happens and you’ve only got three touch screen machines, then you are going to get a backlog. The advantage of the paper ballot is that it’s quicker.'”

Proud to stand with Memphis Starbucks workers as they hold a (ULP) Unfair Labor Practice Picket, stemming from the firing of several workers fighting to Unionize.
Rest in Peace Nichelle Nichols.
While she was best known for tv's first interracial kiss, her involvement with the Civil Rights Movement ran deeper, as she remained on Star Trek at the behest of Dr. King.
She was truly a trailblazer in every sense.

No, an assault weapons ban won't end all mass shootings. But it can bring down the body count. And you don't need an AR-15 for self-defense or hunting.
This is the Lester Community Center, one of the locations the tape IS posted. If you can make out the totals from the door beyond this gate, please let us know.
Both law enforcement and our office were in contact with the family through the weekend. They’ve been fully cooperative.
I have a message from the family to both the public and the media: Please respect their privacy. Please allow them to grieve. 2/4
I penned a letter to Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson a month ago, signed by myself & other local leaders, suggesting Starbucks has been retaliating against union organizers. Now the NLRB has found exactly that.
Keep fighting,
#Memphis7
, the truth will out.
Democratic Nominee for Shelby County DA, Steve Mulroy, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court decision:
“This is a sad day. The politicized right-wing Court goes out of its way to overturn half a century of precedent, w/women as the victims."
The story of Riona should break the heart of anyone with a heart. As the author of Shelby County's first-ever animal welfare ordinance, I take animal cruelty very seriously. So should the law. As DA, I would have a dedicated unit for such issues.
Two months ago I wrote an open letter to the Starbucks CEO outlining why the firing of the seven union organizers seemed to be improper. Today an NLRB investigator confirmed my suspicions. Starbucks should recognize the union, period.
Congratulations to the Department of Justice

attorneys (my old shop) on a solid verdict, sending a much needed warning Re: race based vigilantism.
"Mulroy’s election represents a new chapter for the county’s criminal legal system and... we look forward to working with his office to achieve much-needed and long-overdue systems change."
"We desperately need criminal justice reform in this country. This is especially true in Shelby County.
@SteveMulroy901
will bring such reform, and I'm happy to support him."

Any murder is a tragedy. Any murder in our jurisdiction is high priority. All deserve our care and best efforts. This one has triggered an extraordinary outpouring of public concern which motivates this message. 3/4
On this solemn anniversary, we should reflect that whether it's Pulse or Uvalde or Charleston, whether it's LGBTQ, Latino, or Black, we have a problem with hate crimes & with mass shootings. We need courageous acts against dog whistle politics, & we need sensible gun safety laws.
Congratulations to Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation to the Supreme Court. She is second to none in her experience, credentials, and overall qualifications. May her tenure be long and productive.
“What are you going to do, Memphis? Are you going to sit around on your hands, or you go get up and vote? I personally support Steve Mulroy." -Jacob Blake Sr.
Judge Yolanda Kight will administer my oath of office at 10am CT on Wed, August 31 in the County Commission Chambers of the Vasco A. Smith Administration Bldg. I hope to see you all there and please spread the word.
This former DOJ Voting Section lawyer is troubled by the Supreme Court allowing racial gerrymandering yet again. Even Justice Roberts couldn't take it. Neither should we.
Today I am proud to announce the endorsement of the
#Memphis7
, Starbucks workers who were fired while attempting to Unionize.
Shelby County needs a new Pro-Labor District Attorney who will fight wage theft & job classification fraud, & that's just what I'll do when elected.
As a parent of two White Station graduates this strikes close to home. But whether it's Memphis, Buffalo, or Uvalde, Texas; the lesson is the same:
If we truly care about our children, we will adopt sensible gun safety laws.
Now.
The bill supports "a public health & prevention approach, rather than (just) a law enforcement/criminal justice response."
That's the kind of change in outlook we need.
People not convicted of a crime, and only accused of a non-violent offense, should not languish in jail for no reason other than that they can’t afford cash bail.
The Shelby County DA race is down to 2 candidates. We had some questions for
@SteveMulroy901
and
@ShelbyCountyDA
. One responded. One did not. But we still got you the answers.
"People in Memphis and Shelby County know that (Weirich) and I would handle the matter of abortion very, very differently."

Election Day is tomorrow, August 4th.
Polls will be open from 7am-7pm.
If Mississippi can have legal marijuana, so can Tennessee. And prosecuting simple marijuana possession should never be a priority for a District Attorney.
