Ime Udoka may have saved the Celtics with a key question during a timeout after his team had committed some bad turnovers. According to a source, Udoka stepped into the huddle and said, "Will you guys stop playing like assholes?"
Aaaaaand we have our coaching moment of the year.
Major change in the Al Horford situation:
Per source close to Horford, his side is no longer discussing a new 3-year deal to stay with the Celtics. He is expected to sign a 4-year free agent contract elsewhere...
Story to come.
Informed this morning that I am among those in the latest round of layoffs by the
@bostonherald
... It is impossible here to express just how great an honor it's been to cover the Celtics and NBA and establish that bond with you. I am so deeply grateful you took the time to read.
After the Celtics lost Game 5, Tito Horford stopped me in the hallway and said, "I'll see you Sunday."
I said, "You never know, with the way this team plays."
"NO," he replied. "I said I'll SEE you Sunday."
In related news, it's Sunday.
Well, this was rather embarrassing... Celtic guard Payton Pritchard stopped by security. Wouldn't let him into restricted area so he could sit with C's coaches. VP of communications Taylor Kielpinski-Rogers had to vouch for him. Pritchard burned the strings in this gym last year.
Warrior official pulled Brad Stevens aside in the back hallway last night to let him know it did not go unnoticed that he stood outside the Golden State dressing room and shook the hand of every Warrior player and coach after the Game 6 Finals clincher... In fact, it resonated.
Just watched Paul Pierce (ESPN) on the press room TV in Denver. He said no other player of Kyrie's caliber has ever said he was coming back to a team and then left, and he made the case he should be booed when/if he's back in the Garden next Wednesday. Pierce: "He deserves it."
The Celtics always saw
@isaiahthomas
as best fit for a 6th man role, but he wanted more -- and he played so well they had to start him.
Now he'd be ready to provide instant offense and energy off the bench. The timing (and price) may be right for C's and IT to renew their vows.
If I'm the Celtics, I might want to find a way to get Tacko Fall onto the roster. In addition to trying to develop him. if he's active for a game and you're protecting a one-point lead in the final seconds, how nice would it be to have him defend the inbounds passer?
Celtics' decision to go for the win in Game 82 on April 10 in Memphis -- getting the No. 2 seed, even if it meant playing Brooklyn in the first round -- is looking rather large right now.
Daniel Theis played 22 minutes for the Bulls last night and didn't get called for a single foul...
Obviously the refs didn't recognize him in the new clothes.
The more I see Derrick White, the more I realize the difference from Dennis Schröder.
Schröder played HIS game. White plays the CELTICS' game.
It's about fit and flow.
Just received a call from one of JoJo White's old teammates to say the Celtic legend has passed away at 71 after his battle with cancer. A 2015 Hall of Fame inductee, JoJo was a seven-time All-Star and MVP of the 1976 Finals. No. 10 is retired in his honor.
Per Celtics' source, Kemba Walker appears to be much better. He's been released from the hospital here in Denver and will be flying home with the team Saturday morning.
If Robert Williams isn't all the way there yet (consistency, grind, defensive rotations), the Celtics better find a way to get him there... He has so many of the skills this team desperately needs.
Celtics comfortable w/Marcus Smart as starter. Underrated distributor. As for some questionable shots vs everything else he brings, it's like the old story:
"Our father's crazy. He thinks he's a chicken."
"Have you taken him to a psychiatrist?"
"Hell no... We need the eggs."
No reporting; just opinion:
Not big on moving Jaylen Brown. Four yrs ago when there was talk of trading of Brown & 2 Nets picks for Jimmy Butler, I wrote that Butler could already be here in JB. Now I think Brown's ceiling is higher.
It should take A LOT to consider dealing him.
Grayson Allen, now with the Grizzlies, has picked up a technical foul and now two flagrant fouls (and ejection) in this summer league game against the Celtics... So, yeah, he was just a misunderstood kid at Duke.
If I'm running the Celtics, Jabari Parker gets a roster spot. Some night when things get weird with injuries or illness or ejections, I want to look down the bench and see a veteran -- not a young guy who's unlikely to ever earn enough playing time to develop and be a factor.
Two officiating miscues last night, per NBA Last Two Minute Report: Kyle Lowry should have been called for traveling w/1:07 left, and Jimmy Butler should have been called for defensive 3-seconds (Celtic would have gotten a free throw and retained possession) w/23 seconds to go.
I'm told from a western source
@Celtics
actually did some research on James Harden to decide if they should pursue a trade discussion... They were strongly advised to keep away. The word on how things slipped apart in Houston didn't paint a lot of people in a very good light.
Celtic fans who get frustrated with Marcus Smart's game (shot selection, timing of shots) would probably be stunned to know how many teams covet him... In the last few days, I've spoken to good teams who want his energy and bad teams who want him to help establish a culture.
Ainge calls out the 2018-19 Celtics: “Milwaukee was really good, and they were a very together team. That’s the team that we have been the last five or six years. Like, we’ve been one of those teams, and this year we were not — and we will be next year.”
A lot of players do things like this. But not a lot of players advertise their willingness to do it, thus making more work for themselves... If you don't think
@isaiahthomas
is special... well, respectfully, you're incorrect.
If my fans ever want they stuff signed just send to Pepsi center and I’ll make sure to sign whatever you send and get it back to you. I appreciate the 1s who appreciate me
Complaining to refs and not getting back on defense. Not pressuring the ball. Simply getting out-toughed.
Ime Udoka identified these problems last night ("punked"), and I think he'll do all he can to fix them.
But I told you last year the Celtics' problem wasn't the coach.
Told Al last week that he may have left, but I think Anna is leaning toward re-signing with Boston. He laughed and said, "It really goes to show the connection that we have there, that my family and I have there."
NEW:
Al Horford opens up about why he left the Celtics, says changes were needed: "I just think that if Kyrie would have stayed, I don't know if it would have worked... It was just clear that the group that we had just wasn't going to be able to coexist."
Chadwick Boseman, star of "42," passes away on the same day Jackie Robinson is celebrated across MLB...
Way to twist the knife, 2020, you evil motherfkr.
So Marcus Smart cut his hand on a picture frame in Beverly Hills Wednesday -- exactly a year to the day after he argued with coaches and punched a hole in the locker room wall in Washington.
On January 24, 2019, Marcus needs to call in sick.
.
@jaytatum0
had 19 points in 29 minutes last night. He cut and passed well (hockey assists are key) and got to the basket against a Knick D focused on him... And he deferred at times to
@FCHWPO
, who was having the hotter night.
I'm pretty sure that's what you want out of a star.
The Celtics have no seller's remorse on either, but it was nice to see Romeo Langford go for a career-high 23 points in San Antonio's win over the Knicks and Aaron Nesmith throw in 22 (one off his career high) in Indiana's victory over Cleveland. They shot a combined 18-26.
How does it feel to be back at the Garden?
Rajon Rondo: "It feels good... It feels really good."
How does it feel to be back at the Garden as a Laker? Does it feel strange?
RR: "It feels strange, but I've been back in other unoforms, as well, so... It's still always home."
1/7
I've written most all of this before, but here's a thread to offer some perspective and closure to the Gordon Hayward situation...
To begin, when he agreed to sign with the Celtics in July 2017, it was to be the frontcourt offensive counterpoint to Isaiah Thomas. A big role.
Whenever I've spoken to Paul Pierce about Jayson Tatum, he's always said he won't be his best until he gets to the free throw line more.
Tonight: 17 of Tatum's 50 points were from the line (in 17 attempts). Going hard to the hoop changed the game.
Avery Bradley on the ovation he received from Celtic fans: "It meant a lot to me. I appreciate it. My seven years here, I tried to go out there and compete hard and leave everything out on the floor for them, and for them to show that respect back to me, it means a lot to me."
There are more changes to come for the Celtics, but it's pure fact that the ball movement being displayed by the Suns is most certainly within their capabilities. Needed roster improvements aside, think of how much better they'd look simply with that kind of passing and cutting.
One NBA exec just told me he thinks there has to be more coming from the Celtics: "If what I'm hearing is right on this -- the players, the first round and the pick swap (2028) for White -- that's a lot. I want to see what's next before I tell you what I think."
Longtime Celtics season ticket holder stopped me after last night's game and asked if I'd ever seen a preseason crowd that large and engaged. ... Certainly at the old Garden, but only comparison in the new building had to be for the Pierce-KG-Allen crew in 2007.
A bit of personal news: The right opportunity has come along.
I have signed with as Senior NBA Columnist. If you're at all curious about my last 18 months, I share some stuff here. If not, please check back for my usual hoop drivel.
Wyc Grousbeck addressed Celtics in the post-practice huddle. Pointed to Tommy Heinsohn sitting courtside and to the championship banners. Told them Tommy had a hand in 10 of them and that he's the epitome of Celtic pride: "If you haven't met him yet, do it now." And they did.
The strange part of this for Jayson Tatum is that -- if it's possible to leave his 3-point shooting slump aside -- he's playing perhaps the best basketball of his career.
He's attacking the paint, getting to the free throw line and making good passes when the defense collapses.
My takeaway from Celtics Game 1 is the same thought I carried in:
C's have to identify a wing shooter off the bench to space the floor -- and trust him with the touches he needs to stay in rhythm. From the latter part of last season on, I've felt that guy has to be Nesmith.
Are you a Celtic fan still depressed over the loss to the Lakers? If so, this won't help your mood:
The NBA's Last 2 Minutes report says Tyson Chandler should have been called for an offensive foul for his screen on Kyrie Irving on the final play.
(Hits Tweet button and ducks.)
Neemias Queta isn't the same swat-it-out-of-the-sky rim protector as Rob Williams, but with his size and strength he'll have opponents checking their healthcare plan before driving. A nice element to have on the roster. ... Red would have loved him.
I'm sure Aaron Nesmith is happy to be finding a groove with his shot, but it's his effort on defense that may go an even longer way toward the coaches trusting him with more important minutes... Though no doubt Brad also likes seeing those no-hesitation 3's find the strings.
Nothing hard and fast to report here (stop and read that part again), but the Cavaliers are expecting to see Kristaps Porzingis before this series is over. I'm getting the same vibe from the Celtics.
20 years ago today, Paul Pierce went to the Staples Center and dropped 42 points on the defending champion Lakers.
After, Shaq said to a reporter: "Take this down, my name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the motherfucking Truth. Quote me on that & don't take nothing out."
If I'm the GM of a team that plans to contend for the NBA championship this season, I'm finding a way to get
@MookMorris2
onto my roster... He was the first to openly call out the Celtics' mess this season, but he never let the problems affect how he approached his work.
Eddie House wearing his game jersey today...
He's not having an identity crisis. He says it's in case the Celtics need him to go in and shoot some 3's.
If you want to get consistent offense out of Aaron Nesmith and Romeo Langford, you're going to have to commit to giving them consistent touches and shots.
Especially in Nesmith's case, it's hard for a young player to develop a rhythm and shoot with confidence in limited minutes.
New:
Source tells me Kevin Durant is expected to meet with Nets owner this week: “I have no idea what’s going to come of that meeting. There are some things that KD is unhappy about, and I’m not sure any of that gets fixed here. But maybe it does.”
R.J. Hunter rejoined the Celtics this morning for shootaround and agreed it's like a date with an old girlfriend. "Yeah, and she's grown and you've grown, and then you're like, 'Wow, we've grown.'"
The man is comedy gold. Welcome back, you delightful wacko. Don't ever change.
Dennis Schröder looking good -- which forces Celtics to make a major decision.
Almost certainly can't keep him as a FA, so (once they're whole a while) have to decide if they're good enough to go far this yr. If not, probably have to deal Schröder, who has value to contenders.
Just posted on Herald site:
Is Kyrie Irving already gone? Not sure anything can ever be certain with him, but sources say he’s preparing to join the Nets...
It's too easy -- and false -- to fall on the cliche and say the Celtics are tuning out their coach. If you focus on what's truly going on here, the players are tuning out each other.
There is not nearly enough all-five cohesion, commitment and accountability right now.
Milwaukee scored 27 points off 18 Boston turnovers. The Celtics scored just six points off 14 Bucks turnovers.
That's a 21-point difference in a game Milwaukee won by 12 (101-89).

Just ran into Marcus Smart here after Celtics' game. Said he's heading to meet with his agent... He's been dealing with his mom's health situation, but added that he'd like to get his contract resolved.
Brad Stevens walked by and said he'd be calling. Clearly C's want this done.
Barring a significant acquisition by the Celtics, it's looking imperative that Aaron Nesmith and/or Romeo Langford become a consistent scoring threat.
Being an offensive focus on a competitive team (even off the bench) is an opportunity most covet but relatively few truly get.
Do you like the new Kyrie look? Get used to it. He tells me it's staying -- though he added that he needs to find a head wrap with an NBA logo to keep it kosher with the league's uniform regulations.
Just took the summer league referees a good few seconds -- and Grant Williams screaming at them -- to realize the Grizzlies had six players on the floor.
The players aren't the only ones working on their game here.
Went through video of last night's Boston-Brooklyn Game 3. Among the takeaways:
Jayson Tatum isn't the Celtics' best defensive player... but he's their best player. And when your best player is this locked in and determined on defense, the ripple effect benefits are exponential.
Kemba Walker on ESPN
@notthefakeSVP
on why he picked Boston: "I wanted to be part of something really special as far as really being able to compete at the highest level and give myself the best opportunity to make a run in the playoffs."
For those of you who make your plans based on the Wisdom of Tito, the last thing he said to me this evening after we talked about defense was, "I'll see you Monday."
I first met Tommy Heinsohn when he spoke at our CYO hoop banquet. We became close years later when I got to the Celtics beat.
I'm without a more traditional outlet for the moment, so I'll express a few thoughts here and maybe add more later -- not sure; this is pretty emotional.
Certainly looks like Celtics are poised to make some moves, but could this be Ainge's quote by the end of the week?
Not basing this on any inside into, but would finding a way to add
@isaiahthomas
off the bench and
@aronbaynes
be enough to get
@celtics
over the top in the East?
According to the NBA's Last Two Minute report, Jayson Tatum was right to bitch about the no-call on Evan Mobley with 1:17 left in last night's loss to Cleveland...
One of the reasons Rob Williams' Celtics teammates love playing with him -- and they really, really do -- is that the ball never sticks in his hands...
(Just gonna leave that there.)
76ers coach Brett Brown told me, "I'm going to see the REAL coach Brown."
Then he met up with his dad and legendary South Portland, Maine, coach Bob Brown an hour before Celts-Sixers.
