Me: The pass is only $49
Wife: Wait, that gets me into every Six Flags park and includes parking?
Me: Yeah, why?
Wife: I'm used to paying that for a churro at Disney.
At Six Flags a chicken tenders combo- tenders, fries and drink- with the dumb $0.99 surcharge added is $25.48!(!!!!!!!)
How can families afford to go to parks anymore?
Top Thrill Dragster. A Thread.
Kinzel called building it the "dumbest mistake" he made as CEO and the ride certainly had an interesting history. Let's dive in.
Everyone: trying to understand Fury’s issue
Me: trying to understand why Six Flags went so much trouble to fake a DJ booth including fake printed out DJ computer screen.
Annnnnd... we have a lawsuit. Less than a hour after Ohio released updated guidelines that didn't mention amusement parks Kings Island LLC filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Dept of Health.
The biggest takeaway for me with Hagrid’s was if this is what the current talent at Universal Creative can come up with then the future is going to be very exciting.
More Six Flags food: slice of cheese pizza (with garlic knots) is $16.99 (PLUS $0.99 surcharge). As I stood here to take this photo two different groups of guests walked up, said expletives about price and walked away.
Busch Gardens Tampa just announced “Phoenix Rising” a new family friendly suspended coaster will open at the park in 2024. This roller coaster will be built by B&M, feature on board audio, go 44 miles per hour and be 1,831 feet long.
Stan Checketts passed away yesterday.
Talk to anyone that ever met the guy and I guarantee they have a crazy story. Talk about living your life.
I mean the dude did this, how can you be any more badass?
Kings Island lawsuit goes on to say:
"There is no factor inherent in the operation of an amusement or water park that provides a unique threat of spreading any particular pandemic above and beyond factors inherent in the operation of any other permitted businesses."
20 years ago today Millennium Force opened.
I remember rumors on Screamscape thinking “no way, they already have Magnum why this?”. I visited during the offseason and couldn’t believe how huge it was.
The crazy thing is I think it is just as epic today as it was back then.
Thanks
@sfovergeorgia
for having us out this morning for The Riddler Mindbender (re)opening.
Ride is glass smooth, trains are great, and yes they are running three trains.
Props to SF for giving this old ride new life.
Sad story - talk about a legacy. Still brainstorming on new rides at 89. Park just had best financial year ever.
He started working there at 11… quick math means he worked there 78 years(!!!!!!).
Lightning Rod running two trains and dispatching fast. Perhaps the park has figured out how to dial it in?
Wait was only 15 mins. Heck food lines were longer.
Breaking News: Cedar Fair sells CGA land, set to close park within 11 years.
Reason: "explore potential avenues to maximize the value of the Company’s extensive asset portfolio." and will use funds to reduce debt.
Shoutout to
@sfovergeorgia
for having us out to preview Kid Flash.
Twisted mess of track with fun racing element, looking forward to coming back at night sometime as screens look pretty cool.
Top Thrill 2 not allowing sandals/flip flops past the entrance is a big guest experience design flaw... and then charge guests for a locker?
Huge miss by the park to not take into account the guest experience.
What's going on with RMC? The new "Intamin"?
Both new coasters have been closed at times this week (Wildcat now for a few days).
And Fiesta Texas announced they closing WW after only 5 years to retrack and change supports.
Fun Spot 208 project was not well received.
Six Flags/Cedar Fair joint press conference:
Selim Bassoul, Chairman: "In my 25 years of transactions I've never been more excited than this combinations."
"This starts & ends with guests"
"Will take the best ops from both chains"
“Grow our company into a global brand”
In honor of National Roller Coaster day let’s hear how you got into the hobby. Was it a certain coaster? Certain parks? Thrills, Chills and Spills? America’s Greatest Roller Coasters in 3D on VHS?
Scummy move by Six Flags Over Georgia to add a surcharge to all orders.
The chain, and this park, have been doing so much right lately but this isn’t it.
It is really felt on non-meals- as an example it means a bottle water is now $5.98 - a 19.8% increase in price!
We put Chance to sleep today. One hell of a run. We rescued him when he was 1-3ish, and had him for just under 9 yrs.
- 3 theme parks (SFOG, Knoebels, Dino World)
- Visited 11 states
- 4 MLB stadiums (+1 minor league)
- He witnessed a no hitter at one of the MLB games!!
Was able to get on Rise thanks to a friend switching with us, but made it half way thru and got evac’d. Lovely. Giving out a Fast Pass only good tomorrow when I don’t have ticket for tomorrow is perfect solution.
1) How does a simple chain lift coaster have so many issues?
2) When do the Steelers jump in and go “yeah so we don’t want to be associated with this”
Shame because it’s an excellent coaster.
Kennywood released a statement that Steel Curtain will be closed for all of the 2024 season while the park works on a long term fix to improve its reliability.
In a day of train reveals this flew a bit under the radar of IAAPA announcements.
New park coming to South Dakota. Great idea to build something where there is existing tourism base (Mt Rushmore).
If on Nov 2nd 2003 you told me in 20 years:
- blink-182 would have
#1
album
- Rolling Stones would have just released an album
- Beatles would debut a new song
- Top Thrill Dragster was closed for good
- Cedar Fair & Six Flags would merge
I wouldn’t have believed any of it.
SeaWorld’s CEO resigned (again). Second time in the last 7 months.
For those playing at home here’s the last two years starting in Feb 2018:
1) Joel Manby out
2) John Riley temp ~1yr
3) Gustavo Antorcha 7m
4) Marc Swanson ~3m
5) Sergio Rivera ~5m
6) Marc Swanson
I paid $900 for TWO 27 games season tickets for the Braves.
The lowest FACE VALUE price for World Series tickets, I'm talking worst seat in the house, is $800.
I'll never stop saying it: when you compare Disney to sports or concerts, it isn't as expensive as everyone thinks.
I reached out to a tiki artist who I loved their work and had them create this piece of art for my wall.
Gave them some Cedar Point skyline photos and said go. Love how it turned out. My favorite detail might be Maverick hiding in the background.
Universal, Cedar Point, Six Flags Over Texas, and Six Flags America have all reached capacity. Silver Dollar City has high attendance and is recommending guests to come back later.
Yes, it’s a holiday weekend. But good sign for the industry.
The local new paper that has covered the park for 150 years is blocked likely because it called out their locker policy for what it is.
(so just remember whenever you see any media day content from any park it’s likely has some bias from invitees)
The juxtaposition between Cedar Fair & Six Flags today has been interesting.
SF leadership started day by sharing they want upgraded park experiences & to target families.
Not even a hour later CF announces fantastic upgrades to areas at multiple parks w/perfect family rides.
Today’s random offseason piece of trivia
The company behind the failed experiment of Freestyle Music Park also had proposed plans for “Orlando Thrill Park” near Fun Spot.
Personal news time- adios, Orlando. After 13 years here we’re moving north to Atlanta.
Accepted a really great opportunity up there, and while I’ll miss many things about Florida I’m really excited to have baseball and mountains much closer.
Who lives in ATL & has tips?
CoasterDynamix continues to find ways to take all our money.... just dropped three new models today: Crystal Beach Cyclone, Dueling Dragons and Olympia Looping.
SeaWorld announced record revenue, income and EBITDA for Q2. Net income up 142.7% from 2019.
For comparison- Q2 income:
SeaWorld: $82 million
Six Flags: $70 million
Cedar Fair -$59 million
Pretty clear why they aren’t opening new rides.
Wicked Twister - a thread.
Sure it opened in 2002, but let's rewind to '01. This was the anti-hype coaster. The park literally teased the removal of the ride more than they did for announcing it.
On Sept 27th, 2001 a building permit/demo permit was filled. No strong rumors yet.
Let’s talk Mystic Timbers... I always enjoyed it but it is running better than ever. Last row right at dusk 👌
Easily the best ride in the park, the best GCI and a top ten wood coaster. I take back any statements from previous visits where I didn’t feel that way.
Since none of you care I’m still going to post... inching close to 700. If I hit a few mountain coasters on the way out I’d be there thanks to two new credits at Dollywood.
Remember when SeaWorld decided to furlough most of the company & do it without healthcare?
The execs decided to reward themselves for “their extraordinary contributions & continued expected contributions to the Company & its long term goals during the global COVID-19 pandemic.“
I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe things have changed but paying for degree in which your professors have you play Roller Coaster Tycoon or take tests on names of Disney parades was a joke. Lots of great stories, made great friends but not much learning.
Get a business degree.
I filmed this earlier today at SFOG. The park now has these safety stations throughout. And there was also temp security towers with cameras.
But at some point you gotta wonder how much staff or stations or cameras can do when 600 people become unruly.
Is it time to talk about Schwarzkopf rides’ safety?
The Jetline accident is the third Schwarzkopf coaster to kill people because of issues caused with the wheel assembly on the train.
Yes, millions of rides are given each year without fail, but that seems interesting.
Great quick trip to Florida for the new coasters and free concert season.
Don’t be jaded about Gwazi from the delays, it’s 1000% worth the hype and racing down here as soon as you can to ride.
It’s that good. Might be RMC’s best overall design - layout, comfort, pacing, etc.
Cedar Fair also shared some other interesting nuggets today:
State of Ohio was so impressed with how the parks were run safely they asked CF for advice on how to manage queuing for election.
So you have Cali who won't let parks open, & then Ohio who is asking parks for help?
New Oklahoma theme park is being executive produced by....
The same person involved in the DreamVision parks where the investor ended up in jail for real estate fraud on the project.
Unsure of the their role in the DreamVision project but interesting connection.
..... pssst. Shanghai Disney isn’t the first park to reopen.
Parks in China have been reopening for a bit, parks in Korea never closed.
Most of what Disney is doing the other parks have been doing for a while.
I totally get the reasons why parks want to replace wooden coaster track with steel.
That said I do hope the true wooden coaster doesn’t go away. Shoutout to the parks investing and maintaining their wood coasters.
Here's the cherry on top about Six Flags pricing:
The $0.99 surchage is due to "increased labor and supply costs" however in 2022 they were paying food service "up to $15/hr" now they are paying up to "$12/hr"
So they've gone down in wages but claim labor costs have gone up?
@OnlineHyde
The more people that refuse to buy because the prices are too high, the higher they have to keep cranking prices to eke out profits from the remaining paying suckers, which just exacerbates the cycle.
And it's not like they're paying exorbitant wages either ("up to $12/hr"):
A 1 flag day.
They never lowered our restraints (old Arrow so operator needs to) and train dispatched without restraints done.
But don’t worry they still did “visual scan” and cleared the train. So much for all your scans if you don’t check restraints.
Cedar Point announced an eclipse event (and the earliest ever rides have been open at the park).
You’re move
@KingsIslandPR
give us the day time in the dark Beast ride (for charity so we don’t have to wait in line and try to time it).
Checked out ArieForce One this morning
@FunSpotAtlanta
Absolutely crazy. This is an airtime machine though the first diving inversion thing and the stall might be the highlight.
Huge addition that clearly changes the trajectory of this park. Too early to wonder what’s next?
