Just 130 years ago, this inlet within Glacier Bay National Park was covered by ice hundreds of meters thick. Today, it's ice-free. The retreat of the ice has exposed a geologically-rich landscape of steep slopes, glacial rivers, ocean tides, and sediment.

Warmer air and ocean temperatures aren’t the only causes for melting Arctic sea ice. Clouds, aerosols, and bumps on the ice can play a role. This summer, two aircraft from @NASALangley & @nasawallops are flying over the Arctic Ocean to investigate. 🛩️🛩️

Clouds and water vapor can prevent Earth’s heat from escaping to space. A clear, dry day in the Arctic is like opening a window to let heat out of a stuffy room. The PREFIRE mission will help understand how clouds at the poles affect the planet’s climate.
