Gems in this piece: 1. Taliban noted it thinks highly of Trump's "America first" creed. 2. "Trump was much more honest with us than we thought..stunned with his offer to meet in Camp David” 3. “Trump might be ridiculous for rest of the world, but..sane & wise man for Taliban”

It always felt inevitable. In fact, that Gen. Raziq had survived this long was nothing short of a miracle. In 2013, he and I tried to count the number of attempts on his life - we counted about 40. And he was still in his mid 30s at the time.

When the carnage was over, the dead bodies bagged & the guns put away, what was left behind spoke of the true extent of the tragedy: 18 newborn babies, many covered in blood & most now motherless — casualties of war before they had even left the hospital.

Some tight hugs here, as Afghan Taliban leaders meet Pakistan’s foreign minister. (For the rest of them might be easy, and not so unusual, but one wonders what goes through Mullah Baradar’s head: ten years of Pakistani prison and humiliation.)

Secretary Pomelo and Qatar FM take their seats. And now Taliban Deptuy leader Mullah Baradar and chief negotiator Mawlawi Abdul Hakim arrive (he is making first appearance). And it begins.

100 years after his death, just like that Uttar Pradesh changes the poet Akbar Allahabadi’s name to Akbar Prayagraj…after CM Yogi changed the district’s name to Prayagraj. Rashid Allahabadi is now Rashid Prayagraj and Tegh Allahabadi is Tegh Prayagraj.

The pen rests today. The hands are busy digging graves, for those who were killed by the dozen as they took notes, in a classroom, with pens just like this. #Kabul

The Taliban, in their first message since returning to Kabul, said there would be no reprisals against anyone: “from today onward, war is over.” But it will take more than words to quell fear griping large parts of Afghanistan. Need to show in action.

Against probably the best team of the World Cup so far (Asif Ali showed how good!), Afghanistan was definitely a bowler short. But remarkable, fighting cricket — in the game till last stretch & giving Pakistan plenty of tough challenge. @MohammadNabi007 can take a lot of heart!

Thousands of refugees running from the violence in Afghanistan have been in limbo in Indonesia for years — some almost a decade — without the most basic rights. They have the right to a future, the right to a life of dignity. #HelpRefugees_Indonesia

Flames at gates of kabul, scarred people flooding in, and you think of how much precious time wasted over negotiating lists, delegations, protocol, who is kept out. US betrayal, Pakistan hand, Taliban greed — all true. But so much of the disaster’s extent is self-made. So much.

Think about it: you lose two sons to the war and you are left their widows and their pension is gone because the gov collapsed. Your 2 other sons lost their jobs because the gov collapsed. Ghani is back to writing his books. She’s left the widows, the orphans, and Taliban rule

Yes 🇦🇫 lost, yes 🇵🇰 won. But the 2nd innings was as brilliant as I’ve seen Afghanistan play as a fielding/bowling team. What’s even better? The beautiful, disciplined intensity of the young players. Gurbaz, the Zadrans. Farooqi: finally 🇦🇫 has a fast bowler who can change games!

India is halfway through a massive undertaking: to provide a clean water tap for every home by 2024. That’s 192 million households across 600,000 villages. About $50 billion in funds, 18,000 gov engineers, more than 2.5 million miles of pipe. @HariNYT
