Seeing a lot about conditions in hotels where Glasgow asylum seekers were placed. I think that misses the point tbh. It's about having what little control you have over your life taken away. Already traumatised people trapped, with no money, no information, no agency, no voice.

In the midst of the whole #PritiPatelsEyebrows thing, don’t lose sight of where the real horror lurks - millions on charter flights to deport people, on privately run #detention centres like Yarl’s Wood and #Dungavel , and on supporting the sale of arms. Great thread here. 👇

Thinking about the people who died from drug overdoses in 2021...1,330 of them.💔 It's a reduction of 1% since 2020 – the second highest figure ever. And there's work being done, I get that. But if this is really a public health emergency, we need an emergency response.

Concerns have been repeatedly raised about decisions taken to move asylum seekers in Glasgow from flats into hotels and stop their support. Now activists are calling for an inquiry after the sudden death of a 30-year-old Syrian man.

So I cracked (course I did) and watched #thePapers . It's basically very honest because @SarahCH is perceptive in the stories she wanted to tell and worked hard to get people to trust her. Also it has some great swearing by @richardwalker5 which is worth your time.

“I don’t think about numbers. I think about the people I’ve cared about, who would go out of their way to do anything for you. They are dying in droves." Ahead of the release of 2019's Scottish drug death stats, I spoke to drug users and their families.

I put in FoIs to all of Scotland's health boards and found that due to the complexity of putting in place community support, some people were still in mental health wards more than three years after being told they were well enough to leave.

Four year ago The Promise – Scotland's independent care review – found there was “no place for profiting in how Scotland cares for its children”. But since then councils have spent £200m on residential care provided by profit making companies...

And in fact the drug deaths of women – so often not really seen in this whole crisis – increased by 31 from 2020. The stories we heard from women in #fromthemargins are amongst those that will always stay with me. This is where work is most urgently needed.

When The Ferret was set up in 2015, its mission was to hold the powerful to account. But what happens when we find responses to problems that might already be working? For my year round-up I explored the role of solutions journalism...

I spoke to a guy about making the choice between keeping a home and going to rehab earlier this week. He asked me then: "Do you think it'll get sorted?". Great to phone him today and say:"Yes! It got sorted." Well done to all those who campaigned on this.😊

We were delighted by @AConstanceSNP 's announcement confirming funding will be put in place to stop people having to choose between keeping their homes and going to rehab. Thanks to @Liam4Orkney for highlighting our piece on this earlier in the week.

“The Home Office will underplay and undermine failures rather than answer questions about asylum deaths honestly.” As new figures show death rates in the asylum system are escalating, campaigns say an inquiry is now urgently needed.

In 2014 I set-up and ran @PavementMag workshops for people with experience of homelessness. We reported on things that mattered to them...and their friends, and family were dying from overdoses...Gave me a window to the power of grassroots media. Learned a lot from others since.

Read this thread. And think about your 16-year-old (or your 16-year-old self) turning up alone, traumatised and hungry. But facing police and disbelief and hostility. We can – we must – do better than this because it will make our communities safer and better for all of us.

An unaccompanied 16-year-old Eritrean boy turned up at our youth club this week, just after opening, with some others. He was a new face so I asked him how long he'd been in the UK and he said: "today". I said: "what do you mean 'today'?" He said: "I arrived, just today". 🧵
