Everyone knows we don't build as pretty as we used to... but nobody seems to know why. It's not "culture" or "trends," nor is it "labor costs." It's actually a lot simpler than that. Here's why we don't build like we used to - and *how* we can start building pretty again 🧵🧵🧵

Wisconsin's Fox Valley is home to over 730,000 people - bigger than the Madison metro area! It needs to be better connected. Using existing tracks, we can build a world-class regional rail system for less than the cost of a single highway interchange. What do you think?

3) Focus Older buildings spent all their exterior budget on 1 or 2 sides. (📸1 + 2) Modern buildings often spend close to the same amount on the front as they do on the alleyways. (📸3 + 4)

But this doesn't mean we still can't build beautiful... 📸1. is Chevy Chase Lakes, just outside D.C. We have the skills. 📸2. is from Poland, where regulation is lighter, so new traditional architecture is common. LESSON 1: If we loosen regulation, we can build like we used to

@BirdmanAnderson 1) Wrong state buddy 2) Murder rate in Minneapolis has been on a slow, but steady decline 3) Yes rates are much higher 2020 & since, but that's literally everywhere in the country.

Ironic this is the photo used. I've yet to see a photo of I-794 with any amount of serious traffic during rush hour. Not even congestion, just traffic. I haven't found one!

@Royal_Greenwich Terrible to make people homeless because of this. Just fine the developer heavily and move on with it.

There's also a slew of wonky process changes. There isn't a lot of NIMBYism in Milwaukee, especially in the government - but the time saved from eliminating these unnecessary meetings will certainly encourage development. Remember, time is money!

What could've been. This project was good to go, all financed by a huge international developer, but the post office refused to move to the airport. SMH.

There also some new design requirements. Some are very simple and impose minimal costs to developers. These are good, they'll create a much more aesthetically pleasing city.

Great examples of how Tradified 5-over-1s turn out in the real world. Look like shit. To those who say 5-over-1s can look like Haussmannian Paris: "Anything is possible when you don't know what you're talking about." No one who says that has ever done it, or even tried.

Despite some minor nitpicks, this proposed zoning code update is transformational - if passed as is, it will be *the most ambitious zoning code in the country.* This proposal is likely to be codified in late 2024. Read the proposal in full:

4) Education The list of schools that teach traditional architecture is *very* small. (📸 1 - the list is only *a little* incomplete). The standard is modern architecture, because that's what people know how to do. So when people try, it often doesn't look good... (📸 2)
