"Government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter." Thomas Jefferson
Shooters gotta shoot
Jimmy Butler was right about the young Bulls players back in '17, he was right about Fred Hoiberg, he was right about the softness in Minnesota, he was right about Philly being a team divided. 'Bout damn time Butler getting the credit rather than being painted the villain.
Kings players walking back to the locker room have obviously been reading Chicago papers - "Uh-oh, another 2 1/2-hour practice for them tomorrow" one of them yelled.
The biggest head scratcher in Last Dance so far? Pax saw a GM sabotage a coach as a Bulls player and the poison to come from it, and allowed it to happen to Thibs as an exec.
Bulls since they traded Jimmy Butler - one playoff appearance in six seasons and a winning percentage of 40.4%.
Butler since he was traded from the Bulls - six-straight playoff appearances - including a final - and a winning percentage of 62% in games in which he played.
This is how a Bulls front office should have been operating for decades ... relentless aggressiveness, always lurking, always pushing. A world-wide brand finally acting like a world-wide brand rather than a mom-and-pop store who doesn't take back returned purchases.
Cannot stress this enough - the Bulls organization instantly looks better in the eyes of potential big-name free agents with Gar Forman gone. His presence poisoned the well with players, agents, and other execs. Players talk, and Forman was deemed completely untrustworthy.
AK is playing chess, while the rest of the division not named Milwaukee is playing checkers. He's done more in his one season in charge than the old regime did the last 10 as far as building a smart roster.
You know which Bulls group got quiet? The analytics nerds that felt the three-pointer was more important than the mid-range. DeRozan is a middle finger to that on a nightly basis.
Hmmm ... White Sox could use a manager that has SS experience to help Anderson, deals well with Spanish-speaking players, knows how to distract, and has experience and a World Series ring ... hell, where can they find that??? Maybe in a TV studio ...
Sources indicated that there was a blowup between players at halftime of the Timberwolves loss, causing Bulls coaches to go into the locker room while they were talking outside. Source said it was the second time it happened. The other was right after a game.
The feeling the players had toward Jim Boylen did carry weight into the decision to fire the coach, but according to a Bulls source there was also behavior displayed by Boylen that was considered "detrimental to the organization."
The best manager in Chicago is hanging with his grandchildren out in the burbs. Baseball should be embarrassed that Ozzie Guillen has been all but blackballed.

New Bull in charge Arturas Karnisovas isn't wasting time, reportedly grabbing NOLA's cap specialist J.J. Polk and handing him an assistant GM title, and he might not be done today, with another hire just about agreed upon.
Since Chandler Hutchison scored 18 with the Wizards and tweeted out "One man's trash ..." he's had three DNPs and scored 5, 5, 0, 2, 5 in the five games he did get in. Washington is 3-0 when they don't play him, 1-5 when they do.
Several NBA executives have told the Sun-Times that the Bulls have used this weekend as legwork for upcoming front office changes, with GM Gar Forman heading to a lesser role and the fate of coach Jim Boylen up in the air at season's end.

Something to think about - Bulls are paying just under $46 million for the talents of Zach LaVine AND DeMar DeRozan this season. Houston is paying $44 million for John Wall this season, who is not playing as he awaits a trade that likely isn’t coming soon.
Free agent movement has just been hi-jacked by KD. There is not one untouchable piece in the Bulls organization - player, coach, front office, PR - that shouldn't be included in a deal if you're AK. Not one. Three years of KD is better than 5 years of any Bull.
The Pistons were trying to move up to No. 3 all day and grab Williams before the Bulls, per sources. Charlotte wouldn't budge, and Bulls got their man.
Watch ... Bulls will somehow get their hands on DRose this summer ... and you maniacs will be right back in the ticket line, throwing money at the window, forgiving everything.
How bad was the Lakers decision making last offseason? They could have kept Caruso for less than the Bulls paid him and brought DeMar DeRozan home at a combined cost of $30 mill this season. Instead, they chose Russ at $44 million. Ouch!
Since Nov. 1, games in which Ayo Dosunmu has played at least 18 minutes, the Bulls have a ridiculous 10-1 record. In games that it’s been less than 18 minutes, how about a 2-6 record? Coincidence? "From Chicago ... "

I've known
@LaurenceWHolmes
and
@Jason1Goff
for almost two decades. They continue showing they are must-listen-to voices in this market ... beyond sports. I'm very proud of both. They have grown from a couple young fellas that I used to yuck it up with to better men than me.
A source told the Sun-Times that head coach Jim Boylen is concerned he will be out as coach, and would at least like a sit-down with new bosses when the time comes. The Reinsdorfs, however, will not be handing out a life preserver for Boylen.

Alex Caruso, Patrick Williams and Lonzo Ball all flew back to Chicago today for their individual workouts. Caruso and Williams have not been cleared for contact practice until latest bone scans are done and results looked at by specialist, per coach Billy Donovan.
Jerry Krause was a very flawed human being, no question. There's no defending that. What's ironic is that as much as Phil Jackson and MJ ripped him, they have both been disasters as basketball decisions makers.
Bulls VP of basketball ops John Paxson is willing to leave the organization all together if asked by the Reinsdorfs and the new-look front office.

Myles Turner got two years, $60 million in the winter, and while he does bring more to the defensive side than Vooch, he's not $10 million a year more valuable. This was a win-win for the Bulls and Vooch, and done at a discount.
You know who died a quick death? All the media minutes police that used to drink the Bulls narrative that Thibs caused injuries. Bulls have had far more injuries post-Thibs, yet crickets ....
@JaMorant
Ja is a transcendent player- no arguing that. But the ROTY should go to the most impactful. The NBA built a TV schedule around Zion and expanded a bubble for Zion. His 24 games were must-see TV. I'll take that 24-and change PER and stand on that side of history.
Here’s all you need to know about Arturas - knows cap and the art of salaries isn’t a strength of his, so grabs one of the best in the Western Conference. Self awareness the Bulls haven’t had in awhile.
Jimmy Butler was the perfect example of how organizations get their media puppets to paint a negative narrative, doing their best to justify their bad decisions. Problem is winning everywhere he goes, while everywhere he leaves is a mess, well, lies only last so long.
As confident as I've seen a Bulls locker room since the Jimmy years. AK was all smiles today, the players had swag, the coaching staff ... even the team's laundry guy had jokes.
Monday will be interesting. Feels like this will continue to carry over. Pat Bev Effect is real!
AK has now given Zach LaVine an All-Star Center, a legit play-making point guard that won't hunt LaVine's shots, and a world champion backup combo guard who does the dirty work. You want "respect?" Go out and earn it this season.
Under the category of believe it or not, sources have indicated that board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is obviously pissed about Year 3 of the rebuild, and is set to turn up the heat on Gar Forman's GM seat.
Read it:
Jerry Reinsdorf hired an African American GM in Ken Williams, and a Venezuelan manager in Ozzie Guillen. Swimming against the MLB tide on both fronts. That should be noted somewhere.
Vooch is mad at Billy, Zach is mad at the officiating, fans at the UC are mad they wasted a few Benjamins, and I'm mad that there are 81 more of these.
Obviously nothing is decided on the coaching front and Jim Boylen's future yet, but there's been a lot of smoke around Adrian Griffin and the Bulls today. One exec told me Griff is so ready that he's "over-qualified" for most coaching jobs.
Here's all you need to know about the role COO Michael Reinsdorf is playing in this. Bulls ownership has a history of sometimes strenuous negotiations when it comes to executives and coaches. This won't be an issue now. The wallet is open, because Michael wants this done right.
The thing I really like about LaVine's offseason? His unselfishness to help in the recruiting process was outstanding, knowing he is now the 4th-highest paid guy on his team. Ego was pushed aside for the betterment of the product. Some former Bulls wouldn't do that.
Sounds like Zach was supposed to do a walk-off interview with the flagship station and decided ain't happening. This is not usual behavior for LaVine, but maybe this is no longer the usual LaVine. Bulls PR is very good at their jobs and should have been treated better than this.
A source close to the situation said that Bulls COO Michael Reinsdorf reached out to at least three African American executives about interviewing, and was either denied permission by their current organization or simply turned down.
Dalen Terry threw a 2K reference at my guy
@SamSmithHoops
... said he's "75, 75, 75" across the rating board and needs to get them all up to 99s. Poor Sam had no idea what the hell the kid was talking about.
I’m accused of being a Zach LaVine hater for over a year, but completely not true. I’m a max Zach LaVine hater. Bulls are really limited in what they can do today, and when you max a two guard that isn’t a two-way player … well, you turn into the Wizards very quickly.
Bulls already had a team meeting after Game 1. Billy Donovan said he walked in and asked if they needed more time to talk. He was told yeah, and walked out.
This is going well so far.
What's wrong with this picture:
Forbes ranks NBA teams by worth:
1. Knicks $4 billion - Going after two max players this summer.
2. Lakers $3.7b - Going after A.D.
3. Warriors $3.5b - Dynasty
4. Bulls $2.9b - Mom and Pop store.
5. Celtics $2.8b - Top threat in the East.
Gar Forman has been terminated from the Bulls organization. The Bulls will eat the final two years of his current deal, which was not a big hit by GM standards.
Illinois fine-tuned Ayo Dosunmu, but Chicago raised him. Why is a second-round pick making an impact for a 6-2 NBA team? Because he's "fearless." Just ask him. And damn right he thinks he's from the Mecca!
Read it:
Source just told me that Bulls continue taking calls on Zach LaVine - not making them - and asking price remains astronomical. Little has changed since February trade deadline.
Knicks have long pivoted off the guard.
Game of chicken by AK?
Just spoke to a source that pointed out that new Bulls GM Marc Eversley still has good relationships with the members of the Raptors from his days in Toronto ... ahhh Toronto, where former Bulls assistant coach Adrian Griffin resides as an assistant
#moresmoke
I've been trying to speak this deal into existence for months. Pick-and-pop, pick-and-roll, have fun guarding Zach and the Vuc. The perfect piece to LaVine's game!
You beat me by 15 and are calling timeouts for dicky reasons, and then grab my arm like that in line, then some coaching assistant lackey loud talks me, yeah, faces are getting grabbed!
Elton Brand has been on the job 140 days and acquired Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris. Gar Forman has been on the job for 3,548 days and signed Carlos Boozer, Dwyane Wade in a walker, and acquired Otto Porter.
Something feels off.
This Bulls rebuild has been a joke. Three years in and still not one star player or a plan on how to get one. Time to get bold, call the dysfunctional 76ers, and do what it takes to land Embiid. Bye Zach ... bye Wendell ...
Read it:
Been very critical of Bulls maxing Zach LaVine out, and knew he and I needed to have a sit-down over it face-to-face. It happened, and he did start to sway me. Two guys debating a sports take that just happened to be about him.

If the Bulls would have handled business the right way they would be sitting in front of Portland right now with a 42.1% chance to keep a top 4 pick and a 10.5% chance to land Wembanyama.
One thing to remember when talking Bulls and a Lonzo Ball trade? Gar Forman is now a special adviser to the Pelicans, knows this Bulls roster up and down, and likes to think he's the smartest man in the room. Do what you want with that PSA.
Hearing if it was up to Mo Bamba he would be a Bull by tonight. Wanted to be a Bull on draft night '18, and that hasn't changed. Problem is feeling isn't mutual at his current asking value. As reported by
@KCJHoop
, Danilo Gallinari is in play.
How are major markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Boston all understanding the importance of adding superstar talent in this modern NBA, while the Bulls ... crickets.
"I talk a lot to Pat, Pat Williams, because I think he can be one of the best defenders in this league with his size, with his physicality, with his wingspan.'' Bulls veteran Daniel Theis on the rook!
