I am excited to announce my role as the Boys Selection Committee Chair for the BioSteel All Canadian Game. Looking forward to working with many talented and diverse basketball minds from across the country.

So after 2 years of dealing with this pandemic:
1. Can’t get a PCR test
2. Can’t get a Rapid test
3. Health care system still worried about overflow of patients
As a 🏀 coach I have to ask myself?
Where are the adjustments? What did we learn from being down 20 in the first half?
In my almost 20 years of coaching basketball I’m still waiting for the day that:
• I’m sick
• I couldn’t get a ride
• family problems
• have to babysit my little brother or sister
etc
happens on the day of a game.
Funny how these issues always arise for practice.
Not a coaches job to give a player confidence. It's their job to teach a player how to 'own' their own confidence. If you rely on someone to feed you confidence that someone can also take it away. If you earn it on your own nobody can take it away not even the coach or opponent.
Basketball at the high school age has become the wild wild west. Programs recruiting from other programs, adults trying to ride the coat tails of youngsters, player transfers, all-star game wars, club/aau wars.
What is it all for? Who benefits? Is anybody happy? What’s next?
We fight for our students, we fight for the students of the future, and we fight against the destructive cuts to public education!
@Sflecce
@fordnation
are on the wrong side of history!
Dwayne Casey forgot more about basketball than most of the people who are bashing him know about the sport. Conviction is always a luxury of those who are on the sidelines. People whose opinion has no bearing on the outcome of anything are usually the most certain in their mind.
Coming out of High School 🏀 if you don’t know how to:
1. Run and execute offensive sets/concepts
2. Defend in Man to Man understanding positioning, expectations with matchups, screens, scouting reports
3. Be an ‘everyday’ person
4. Shoot
5. Be Positive
Don’t expect to play.
As a volunteer basketball coach in an ever increasing privatized system my coaching salary of ($0) affords me the position of not sacrificing the development opportunities for my players in order to achieve results. At the end of the day it’s about the players not the adults.
Approximately 174000 more kids in the
#GTA
will pick a basketball for the first time tomorrow because of Kahwi Leonard’s shot tonight. The explosion of 🏀 in the GTA will continue at an unprecedented rate!

Casey risked his job by not playing Derozan in the 4th Q of game 3 because he was doing what was best for the team. (Derozan played terribly) Casey did what was right not what was popular and showed what type of character person he is. He should have been given a raise not fired.
As a 🏀 coach of 17 years I have never and will never claim that I’m responsible for the success of my former players. THEY are responsible for their SUCCESS. They have made me a better version of myself and I hope that I’ve helped do the same for them along the way.

💯 Facts
@LeoRautins
1. 🏀 is an accessible sport on many levels (equity, inclusivity, affordability)
2. 🏀 does not condone fighting
3. You could become good at 🏀 later on in life
4. 🏀 culture is better
5. 🏀 is a global sport
I swear GTA has the most non basketball- basketball people. I just ask them what type of ball screen coverages they run? Convo usually ends real quick.
Mandatory K-12 Health and Physical Education (5 x week) should be part of the reopening plan for all school boards across the Province of Ontario.

One of the blunders of youth basketball coaching is to coach 6-10 year olds etc the same way you would coach a 16-19 year old etc in an attempt to show everyone how much you know etc. Each stage has its own optimal way and
#EGO
should always be left at the door so kids benefit.

Be careful around PEOPLE WHO:
1) never ask how you are doing
2) talk about themselves
3) need gossip to thrive
4) ask for things but never offer
5) don't say a word when shaking your hand
6) always give you advice
7) never apologize

Sitting here watching two teams of 10 and 11 year olds playing exclusively zone defence.... TBH it’s very effective at this age.
How many parents of the players on those teams actually realize that this will hurt their kid when they get older and play at a higher level?

‘Athletics’ is a perfectly good reason for students and families to transfer or attend a school of their choice. We have schools built for Drama, Art, French, AP, IB, etc. To suggest that sports is any less of a carrot for kids to succeed academically inequitable.
To put in perspective how incredible this is.... go to a 400 meter track at your local high school and try running 105 consecutive laps at an average pace of around 1 minute 14 seconds per lap.
Most people couldn’t sprint 400 meters at 1 min 14 even once.
Losing 🏀 games is ok. It’s ok to be disappointed and upset for a few hours etc. What’s important is that players use the loss as motivation to get better. This fluffy world of not worrying about it is setting kids up for failure in the long run. There is growth in struggle!
Stationary two-ball dribble drills for ballers to do at home.
(14 drills at 1 minute/drill)=14 minutes total workout.
Key focus - pound the ball from the shoulder muscles, keep your head up, stay low, stay balanced, good posture, and have fun!

Assistant 🏀 Coaches: Should never undermine the head coach to players, parents, admin, etc and especially avoid politicking in the stands before and after games. As an assistant coach you are a reflection of the head coach even when you don’t agree on everything which is normal.
All this talk about firing Dwayne Casey is laughable. Like somehow he woke up before the Cavs series and changed as a human being. It’s easy to criticize from the outside looking in. Two bad games out of an entire body of work (82 games plus playoffs) should NOT define this man.
People who cheered when KD went down obviously are not basketball people and should be ashamed. These guys are human beings and deserve the best for bringing so much joy to the average fan that needs to watch

for their own fulfilment in life.
Too many 🏀 trainers spending 95% of training time on stuff players will only use 5% of the time in games. Need to flip that around! Focus on things you use often! (fundamentals, footwork, shooting, straight line drives, decision making, etc) are the majority of the game!
One of the advantages of
@HodanPREP
is that we do NOT operate as a business. It is strictly merit based, free of politics, influence, and $. All of our coaches are volunteers . All players who make the team pay the exact small fee. I don’t care who you think you are.
Spot the difference between PREP 🏀programs who create opportunities for young people and PREP 🏀 programs who create opportunities for the adults who started them.
Both exist!
The accessory rule in 🏀 (matching Ts, sleeves, etc) is a ridiculous rule. You can have a perfectly matched team and if one kids sleeves or wristband is the wrong colour it’s an issue. The other team can have a complete mishmash of shorts, colours, uniforms and that’s acceptable?
It costs about $2500 or so to hoop at
@HodanPREP
and that includes a 50 game schedule and 🇺🇸 travel, strength and conditioning, athletic therapy, daily practice, academic monitoring at a real academic school, sponsorships et. …. Oh and juniors pay about $900 for the same.
Mandatory Health and Physical Education (5 times per week) K-12.......and mandatory participation in school based activities as part of curriculum. Now is the time!
Prioritize mental/physical health with policy changes...... not charts, words, and google slide presentations.

Safe travels and best of luck to all of the AAU teams traveling the next couple of weekends to help young people realize their dreams.
Players don’t forget to thank your coaches for taking their time to bring you guys down there. 🏀💪
Very blessed to have been able to coach a great group of kids this season. Appreciate the volunteerism of my staff who donate their time to help young people.

I’ve had two families commit to my Grade 8 team only to shop around, take a spots from other potential kids, and then go elsewhere. This level of dishonesty and selfishness is disturbing. Don’t come to me in September 2022 asking for favours.
You’ll have to go pay to play !
If you’re a big youth basketball player ask yourself these questions.
1. Does your coach let you shoot threes?
2. Are you allowed to bring up the ball and make decisions?
If the answer is NO then the team is about the coaches legacy/wins and not your development.
As a coach it's never too late in a season to learn something new, toughen the culture of your team, grow, get better.
Reflect, prioritize, adapt, and never ever give up!!
School permits are closed because the Ministry wants the private industry to flourish. Transmission occurring in community and schools are reporting the case counts as if it’s theirs. Boards lose $ from permits, losing students, and blamed for transmission. Getting out foxed 🤦♂️

No doubt the athletes in the

1. Why did that happen?
2. What is the process?
3. Who decided?
4. Was it an application?
He’s correct! I was looking at my TV thinking the seats are empty!
if I paid $10000 for a ticket I wouldn’t even blink let alone go buy a sausage . I’d be sitting there like 😳 the entire time.
A teacher at the top of the pay grid (which takes 11 years and several AQ course upgrades) gets a 2% cost of inflation increase would amount to about $38 every 2 weeks or $3.80 per work day.

Coaching 🏀 : You can have masterful skill sets in X/Os, concepts, and basketball pedagogy, however if you don’t have people/relationship skills, and the ablity to connect and understand your players it doesn’t matter. Get to know your players as people not just as 🏀 players
Wonder if all the youth 🏀 coaches out there will emulate Tony Bennett and stop screaming at everyone?
Haha no way!
His calm is very refreshing. I’ve always said “you don’t have to be loud to be heard”
Unfortunately this quality is very rare in youth basketball coaches.
Let’s be clear about a few things:
1. Basketball is a team sport (it’s not tennis or golf)
2. There are two sides to the ball and great players do both.
3. The small things are big things.
4. Unselfishness is by far the most important character trait in 🏀

Hoopers that are selfish and their parents or handlers have always told them how great they are are setting themselves up for failure in the long run. Stay humble and improve daily……eventually everything evens up and you will always become a small fish in a big pond.
