My final & favorite dissertation paper is published at
@EJPRjournal
!🎉
I analyze qual interviews w/ radical right voters for perceptions about discrimination of immigrants, women & LGBTQI+ people. 🧵⬇️
As this post is trending, I would like to point to our paper (2022, w/ Amy Alexander & Nicholas Charron) on *why European young men are particularly modern sexist* nowadays:
We (basically) argue that it's about increased gender labor market competition.
We know about radical right parties’ gender positions, but what about their voters’ gender attitudes? Because quant research gives mixed results, I did qual interviews w/ radical right voters to find out.
As a result, here is my 1st qual paper!🥳 A 🧵:
Professional news! (and a tired post-moving selfie ☺️😴)
I am happy to start working as a postdoctoral researcher at
@sa_engler
's Chair of Comparative Politics at
@leuphana
! Next to an exciting new chapter as a researcher, on a more private note, ...
I feel very proud to share that I defended my PhD thesis! It was a wonderful day in many more ways than "just" the academic achievement: A challenging but fun discussion with Elisabeth Ivarsflaten, followed by a great party with many dearly loved ones.
This paper is officially accepted for publication at the
@EJPRjournal
!🥳 Writing and publishing it has been a bit of a rollercoaster, so I am all the more happy that it ended up in this great journal. Best start to the new year🤩
SO exited to share my 1st article, out in
@WEPsocial
!
I argue that feminist mobilizations (e.g.
#MeToo
) can provoke conservative backlash, which can fuel radical right voting - even in gender-equal Sweden.
Unboxing my dissertation prints 🎉🥳 Not sure this will make for an influencer career but it sure feels amazing!
I will defend it only in September but couldn't wait to share this 🤗
Last week, I presented 80% of my dissertation🥳 Thanks so much to
@elinnaurin
and
@carolin_rapp
for the extensive constructive feedback!
Next: final spurt of this dissertation!🏃♀️
I'm super happy/relieved that the Swedish Research Council
@Vetenskapsradet
awarded Nicholas Charron, Amy Alexander & me a grant to work on the question: Does advancing women’s empowerment lead to perceptions of threat? - securing me a 3rd postdoc year! 🥳🎉🙏
I don't like selfies but here's proof that I'm in sunny Barcelona! Very excited about the next 3 months visiting
@Evaanduiza
at this great department
@cpa_uab
@UABBarcelona
! ☺️
This week has been a bit crazy (in a good way): With my co-authors Amy Alexander & Nicholas Charron, I had another paper accepted in the
@EJPRjournal
. This one is based on a survey experiment run in all EU states. Looking forward to sharing it soon!
New publication!🎉
In "For every action a reaction?" (
@EJPRjournal
), Amy Alexander, Nicholas Charron & I compare two cultural threats: Refugee immigration & women's rights. In a survey experiment across 27 EU countries... 🧵⬇️
Today,
@TheEconomist
covered our research (w/ Amy Alexander and Nicholas Charron)! 🤩 Thanks to
@AmmassariSofia
for spotting this - it definitely made my day (or week, or month)☺️
Very happy to have two of my papers featured in
@EJPRjournal
's special collection on the occasion of
#InternationalWomensDay
, alongside amazing scholars! ⬇️♀️💪
Our study on young men's modern sexism is getting lots of media attention! I'm super excited🥳
Here is my first appearance on the radio, with Radio Sweden (in English).
Today I had the honor to speak about our research at Sweden's largest gender equality conference, to politicians, practitioners, gender equality workers in public authorities and activists from all over 🇸🇪 🤗

Young men on the labor market face competition from, on average, better educated young women. (Visible) women's discrimination often kicks in later: when having kids, or competing for leading positions. Young men don't see the need for gender equality measures & feel threatened.
Today, I had the opportunity and honor to present my and others' recent and ongoing work on (young men's) opposition to feminist policy to the Swedish Gender Equality Agency
@jamy_sverige
. Feeling very excited and humbled that this work actually reaches practitioners 🙏☺️
Ending summer with exciting news: Our study on sexism among young men is out in
@FrontPolSci
!
Together with Amy Alexander and Nicholas Charron, we show that perceived competition between men and women drives sexism in young men across Europe.
A very sweet moment of this job and my favorite kind of impact: One of my best friends‘ stepdad asked for a copy of my dissertation, so he can learn about gender and the radical right and talk to his friends about it☺️
It's a great feeling when my work reaches non-academic outlets and (hopefully) contributes to public debates. Thank you
@SiljaHausermann
for mentioning my paper in this great interview! German-speakers, have a look - its message goes far beyond Swiss politics.
Today we had
@GefjonOff
in our DEC seminar presenting : “Beyond anti-immigration: Understanding radical right voters' immigration, gender and sexuality grievances”
Standing on the shoulders of giants - that's what presenting my work at
@Fredrika_Bremer
, Sweden's oldest women's rights orga, felt like today. What an honor to present to some of the pioneers of women's rights worldwide!
Happy & honored to share I won one of this year's best paper prizes! 🎉
Thankful to my fellow PhD participants, the inspiring lecturers and the most helpful organizers

We measure agreement with the statement that "Advancing women’s and girls’ rights has gone too far
because it threatens men’s and boys’ opportunities". We find: Young men across all EU countries are more likely to agree, compared to women and older men. (data from 2020)

@_jirisvo_
for having me and for these great questions! In this podcast, I talk about the Gen Z gender gap in political attitudes - based on research w/ Amy Alexander and Nicholas Charron.
Gen Z men on the conservative right , Gen Z women on liberal left?
We get into this troubling pattern (recently highlighted by
@FinancialTimes
article) with
@GefjonOff
. Turn out it shows even in countries that have little in common. 🤔
The moment when you approach your amazing BA thesis supervisor from 2016 and she actually remembers you, your thesis, and even your methodology! Once

Spoke to
@DagensArena
about our study on young men's (relatively) high levels of modern sexism across the EU. Amongst others, we find that their modern sexism is particularly high in regions with increasing unemployment, possibly due to perceived competition between ♀️ & ♂️.
Yesterday, Amy Alexander's, Nicholas Charron's and my study on young men's modern sexism was debated on Swedish national TV by, amongst others, the Swedish minister for gender equality!
Till mina svensktalande vänner!
After 6y in 🇸🇪, I got the opportunity and feel super proud that I spoke about my research in Swedish. Here's the new episode of the podcast Fanny's Förebilder, featuring yours truly! 🥳

@GefjonOff
:)
@UniVerona
@erikvestin
Interesting! Personally, I think,
#MeToo
and misogynist social media accounts may explain the timing. They influence how young men perceive the increasing labor market competition. (We don't test this yet but hopefully soon)
Very thankful for the opportunity to open this special series on the rise of the far-right and strongman politics with a blog post on my article "Complexities and Nuances in Radical Right Voters’ (Anti)Feminism" :)
@GefjonOff
kicks off OxPol's new series on Democracies Under Siege with an analysis of how feminist and gender issues matter to radical right voters, and how these issues are sometimes instrumentalised to advance radical right agendas.
Lessons for future job talks: As a woman in academia, don't mention your partner, and don't have information on your relationship status publicly visible online. (also: wtf?)
"committees assumed that heterosexual women whose partners held academic or high-status jobs were not “movable,” and excluded such women from offers ... and saw all female partners as movable."

Today we welcome

2y ago,
@VersteegenLuca
& I went for fieldwork & spoke to AfD voters. Today, you can read his intriguing study on how these voters view their position in society! ⬇️ 🥳 I never stop learning from you and your innovative perspectives, Luca, thanks for being a great research buddy!
How do
#populist
radical right voters see their position in society? Some previous work studies them as marginalized, deviant, isolated from the rest of societies. But
#PRR
voters (the “ordinary people”) often represent privileged groups like whites and men.

! Will present a paper co-authored with Amy Alexander and Nicholas Charron on sexism among young men in Europe.
America is often treated as exceptional.
It’s not.
Unemployment amongst religious conservatives has fuelled hostile sexism.
Political elites have gained strength by courting zealots and restricting women’s rights.
We see this worldwide

Read Karen Lee Ashcraft's "Wronged and Dangerous"! She convincingly argues that populism not only has gender dimensions but also that gendered grievances constitute the core of populism.
Here's my review:
"Increases in sexist attitudes in a context of feminist mobilization and overall decreasing sexism explain rising preferences for the far right"
Check out this amazing paper! 👇🥳
The dissertation's final sentence: "In light of the possibility of a socially conservative backlash against feminism and its potential consequences for women’s and LGBTQI+ rights, taking action to safeguard previous feminist achievements is crucial."
Quick answer: Eastern German AfD voters partly use the same antifeminist frames. However, they also support some feminist policy, largely reflecting post-Socialist gender norms. They mostly oppose recently salient & third-wave feminist issues.
The cover picture is taken from Göteborg's
@Varldskultur
museum's exhibition on democracy. The cage symbolizes patriarchal society, the ivy plant stands for women's empowerment & the shears on the back represent antifeminist backlash.
In Jordan, Morocco & Tunisia, women's representation increases citizens’ perceptions of the legitimacy of committee processes and outcomes, and pro-women decisions are associated with higher levels of perceived legitimacy.
So interesting! Big congrats,
@kristenkao
& co-authors!
"The agreement gives the Sweden Democrats exactly what they wanted - the strongest possible influence without the accountability of sitting in the new government [...] This gives them a lot of informal power, [...] it is an ideal solution for them."
"We're at the brink of something very different in key respects in Swedish society: how we relate to each other, the forces of the state in relation to individual freedoms and what it is to be a foreigner in this country"
@jonas_hinnfors

4 implications:
1. Voters' attitudes differ by feminist issue, which may explain mixed results from quant research. E.g. they may support equal pay but oppose gender quotas.
2. We need to be careful with inferring attitudes about feminism from few survey indicators.
I'm super proud of

having published her first article, single authored, in

It was so nice talking with Peppe Öhman from
@vadvivet
about Nicholas Charron, Amy Alexander and my study on young men's modern sexism. The 5 minutes format is perfect for quick and easy science communication :)
While most research treats them separately, I argue that cultural grievances related to immigration and feminism, incl. LGBTQI+ issues, should be studied jointly. This is for 3 reasons:
Lena Wängnerud organized a great defense. I am so grateful for my supervisors Amy Alexander, Nicholas Charron and
@johanna_kantola
, for family & friends who came from Germany, for my partner & friends who supported me throughout these years and set up the best party for me.❤️
3) Some RR voters consider intersectionality: In their view, a white hetero man has it worst, while a lesbian Black women is best off. I call this "intersectional cultural grievances".
1) RR voters apply similar arguments to justify these grievances: They don't perceive existing discrimination & think the ingroups will lose if the outgroups win, resulting in an unfair situation.
3. I would love for surveys to include questions on recently salient issues, e.g. the
#MeToo
debate.
4. Feminist and antifeminist voters might agree more than their party affiliations suggest.
2) Some RR voters refer to all 3 grievances within the same argument. In their perception, these grievances are connected. I call this "multidimensional cultural grievances".
In the Swedish elections, among first-time voters, men identify as strongly right-wing as they haven't since 1991. The backlash among young men since 2014 is striking!
#valgraf
The interviewees are from East Germany, a context combining strong support for the antifeminist radical right AfD & a post-Socialist legacy of gender equality in the labor market. How do AfD voters combine these contradictory influences?
First, I identify 4 frames commonly used by antifeminist actors: the heteronormative, populist, postfeminist/femonationalist, & misogynist frames. Next, I analyze whether & how the interviewees use these frames.
we show that both refugee immigration & women's rights polarize between liberals & conservatives. Polarization over ♀️'s rights is *not* driven by conservatives - it is driven by liberals becoming *more* liberal in reaction to a framing of ♀️'s rights as a threat.
The hurdles that non-Western PhD students (and other scholars) are facing as regards visas and residence permits are highly unfair. Conferences like
#APSA2022
and Western universities must provide extra support. See the below thread by
@adea_gafuri
for how this can be done.
