Spent most of my Saturday sobbing my way through
#HeartOfInvictus
😭. What incredible stories of personal resilience and perseverance. An excellent watch.
@anylaurie16
Smelt nuts. Asked if he’d eaten nuts. He said no. Then he kissed me. And I had anaphylaxis. And he stood there saying “Ugh disgusting!” as my face swelled up. Instead of calling an ambulance. But I continued to date him for 2 whole weeks after. 🧐🤨🤷🏼♀️
Still absolutely buzzing from this afternoon when a pupil with additional needs who’s up to now been non-verbal in music, suddenly joined in with clapping and saying his name, and the rest of the class went nuts! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Went out for dinner tonight. The entire restaurant staff came out SIX times to sing Happy Birthday to different tables. But amateur choirs can’t rehearse?! 🧐
The head, Katharine Birbalsingh, told inspectors that “most pupils are not really interested in music but they teach it in depth in Y7 and Y8,” with “limited facilities” also reported as a reason.
This panel contains some fantastic people who I have the greatest respect for. But where are the education academics? The ITT providers? The non-specialist primary teachers? This panel needs to represent those who will deliver the curriculum.
I feel like we are not perhaps shouting the message loud enough that the
#ModelMusicCurriculum
is non-statutory. As an educator it would be irresponsible not to read and consider it, same as any other relevant DfE document, but if you then decide it’s not for you, that’s ok!
Excited to have ACTUAL PLANS for this evening! Gone for the unashamedly middle class combination of M&S pizza deal &
#MischiefMovieNightIn
for husband’s birthday!
Before I discovered cogsci I had no idea how to teach music. Sometimes we hit the piano with a spoon, other times we set fire to untuned percussion instruments. Finally I found the Model Music Curriculum and now we learn how to write staff notation.
Before I discovered cogsci, I had no idea how to teach maths. Sometimes I would get kids to discover how to graph functions. Sometimes we cast spells to bring enlightenment. Finally I found a text book and began explaining math and children began doing math questions.
I often feel the least believable bit in Harry Potter is the section in the third film where the choir gives a performance on day 1 of the new school year.
Had such a great moment today when one of our pupils with additional needs (normally found wandering round the classroom, disengaged) suddenly picked up a beater and played along perfectly to the glockenspiel tracks we’ve been learning all half term. 😍😍😍😍😍
@jameelajamil
Seen lots of comments saying you shouldn’t have used the term “triggered” because of the mental health definition. We also use this term in education all the time to describe the causes of challenging behaviour, so I think you’re using it appropriately for this context. 😘
Played my daughter Stravinsky’s Firebird this morning.
“Mummy, you’ve inspired me, I know what I want to be when I grow up!” Really darling, what’s that?
“A chicken.”
🤦♀️
We need more moderate voices in
#musiced
. Ones that actually understand what is happening in schools to counter the “everything is awful/awesome” soundbite brigade, whose message is formed solely within the echo chamber of their own opinions.

@starstrickenSF
Went to set up in a university conference room for my talk and there was a naked man sitting in there. We locked eyes and he said “oh sorry I thought this room was free,” casually and slowly dressed himself AND THEN SAT THERE FOR MY ENTIRE PRESENTATION.
@PatrickAllies
They can follow it up with The Creation Goes Wrong, where the bass soloist finds out on the day that there is a Part 3, and the first oboe has to teach it to him in McDonalds between the rehearsal and the concert oh no wait that actually happened. 🤣
I mean, if you’re going to do a hat, you may as well do a HAT, right? Off to Mozart-it-up at baby bro’s wedding, hope it doesn’t fall off during the coloratura bits 😂.
Woke up with a big grin on my face, knowing that yesterday we signed off on a new partnership which is going to do a lot of good for music education! 😊 And THAT is all I’m saying for now!
8 years after marrying my husband, we discovered that our grandfathers (who both died before we were born) had escaped France together in WW2. His grandfather’s name and number appears in my grandfather’s officers logbook as one of the men he took charge of on the beach!
I’m sensing a pattern:
1. No-one’s using the MMC - let’s tie it to the evaluation process for the NPME.
2. No-one’s using Oak - let’s embed it into teacher training.
Why can’t they just admit when they’ve got things wrong instead of flogging two extremely dead horses?
When school music budgets can be as low as £50 pa, how on earth do conference organisers think it is ok to charge almost £300 for an ONLINE music curriculum conference? 😱
Thank you so much
@RoyalOperaHouse
for inviting team
@musicedsolution
to the schools matinee of The Magic Flute today. So lovely to see so many Primary children enjoying opera - especially the bit with the glitter..! 🎶
It’s been a long time in the making, but I’m thrilled that next week sees the start of the
@JsyMusicService
JGTTP - a one-year, fully funded, salaried route to QTS for instrumental teachers. 🥳
So, when people in an office buy a cake in the middle of the afternoon for someone else they are working in the office with and stop for ten minutes to sing happy birthday and then go back to their desks, this is now called a party?
Who says “fish and chips” as crotchet, crotchet, crotchet. Surely it’s quaver quaver crotchet? “Why how now my good man I would like a portion of fish AND chips.” 🧐🐟
Just positioning my camera ready for our first ever
@musicedsolution
Zoom course! Massive respect and thanks to
@BMaestros
for switching to online rather than cancelling, and to the 32 teachers finding the time to tune in from home. 🎶
#DiveDeeperIntoMusic
My husband bought us a new washing machine due to the old one breaking. I have just done my first load and I KID YOU NOT instead of beeping when it’s done it plays Schubert’s The Trout. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oh for goodness sake! I am allowed to put together MY OWN list of PERSONAL recommendations for who to follow on Twitter without people constantly going “look who you’ve missed.” 1. I won’t recommend people I don’t know. 2. Maybe I do know them but I don’t recommend them??!! 🙄
@Komaniecki_R
I think it has to be an organisational decision. Either everyone is first name, or everyone is title/last name. I don’t mind either Liz or Dr Stafford as long as it’s consistent with whatever everyone else is called.
Just taught my 8yo the dance routine to Reach for the Stars, in our local coffee shop, and I feel that I have reached Peak Mum. (Also, I can never come here again.)
Another positive about the
#modelmusiccurriculum
is that I’ve made lots of new Twitter friends. In a process that I believe is known as “trauma bonding.”
While we’ve all been here having our lighthearted “fish & chips” rhythm debate,
@N8Holder
has been exposing a troubling side of the
#ModelMusicCurriculum
which I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t spotted myself. Please pop over to his account and read his very important tweets. 🙏
Apparently now the MMC is “central” to the NPME, despite the MMC only being a non-statutory exemplar of how the national curriculum could be approached. But then we all knew that would happen… 🙄🙄🙄🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Feeling for all the music hubs who now have a matter of weeks to create a raft of new documentation to show how they’re going to deliver NPME2 next year, whilst simultaneously preparing their bids to be selected to continue delivering NPME2 the year after!
If I was a music hub I’d be FUMING today.
2019: “Hubs are nothing to do with the MMC”
2022: “Make everything you do align with the MMC.”
The
#ModelMusicCurriculum
is NON STATUTORY & has been UNIVERSALLY PANNED. What are
@educationgovuk
&
@ace_national
playing at?!
Hoping the DfE resists any urges to publish something about music tomorrow so we can all actually get a holiday this time round...
#ModelMusicCurriculum
@FernRiddell
This is so freaky, I have just plucked up the courage to complain about being referred to as Ms instead of Dr on our exam board paperwork (three years running), and I was really apologetic about it. I wish I had seen this tweet first and I would just have read it out verbatim!
Is it just me being grumpy, or is anyone else finding the constant narrative around schools being “challenged” “challenging conversations” “required to engage with” really wearing? How about we trust that schools know what they’re doing, and try and SUPPORT them? 🙄
My child who has hitherto only done music because I made her, has just asked for a djembe for Christmas, and I’m trying to play it cool and not seem too excited in case it puts her off. 😂
So with Nick Gibb gone, what does that mean for NPME2? Can we now finally publicly admit (as so many of those involved have privately) that the
#ModelMusicCurriculum
was just a Gibb pet project, and is not fit for purpose?
Thank you so much to all the colleagues from across the country and particularly the West Midlands, who supported our nomination to honour
@jmthommo
one last time for his amazing contribution to music education with the
#MDEAwards
Lifetime Achievement Memorial Award
@SIPS_music
Those of us who actually work in education are fully aware that due to widely held misconceptions around definitions of “cultural capital”, classical music is pretty much the ONLY type of music that is NOT endangered in our schools…
I would be interested to know what the appointment process was, as I hadn’t heard of this being advertised anywhere? Do any of my
#musiced
Twitter contacts know how it was offered out, or who else applied?
I’m pleased to announce that
@ABRSM
has won a competitive process to draft the new non-statutory Model Music Curriculum. Drawing on ABRSM’s expertise and its team of education professionals, and steered by our expert panel, this will be an important resource for schools.
I just team-taught Year 2 music alongside my 8yo daughter and to be honest I feel I have peaked as a teacher and a mother and may as well just retire as nothing will get better than this! 😍
It’s an interesting flex to think reopening the bidding process for hub leads will create “ever stronger partnerships”. Surely leaving the decade-old existing ones intact would be a more reliable strategy?!
#NPME2
A genuinely lovely man died suddenly and tragically yesterday, leaving behind my friend and her two young children. A terrible reminder of how a whole future can change in an instant. I have been holding my own loved ones extra tight today. 😢
For the one millionth time IT’S NOT A NEW CURRICULUM. Maybe this is an error, but given that the DfE also keep referring to it as such, it is starting to feel like Westminster is attempting to make the
#modelmusiccurriculum
statutory by stealth.
Chatted to a secondary music teacher today whose school is implementing the 6-student-minimum policy for A level subjects. Prevalence of this is a disaster in the making - has anyone anywhere since the dawn of time ever had more than 6 students in an A level music class?!
