POWER OF TAKING THE CHARGE: the one act that stops opposing team dead in their tracks, collects a foul on driver, slows paint touches, can impact strategy-momentum, & speaks to mental toughness. Charges are the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE in the game of basketball!

Greatest form of mental toughness: showing up as the same person everyday, regardless of difficult circumstances=being consistent & doing your job: dependable, competent, no excuse big enough to have a bad day. You either do it or you don't. My father was such a man.

Assistant Coaches: there are many job responsibilities, thankless at times, pedestrian, invisible, yet at NO time are you there to be a negative mouth, meaning be the bright light, make suggestions when appropriate, be accused of being too positive. Ultimately, win the day.

If you asked me? What are the hardest things about coaching? Losing, managing outside influences, death of a player or their loved ones, time away from your own family, most people think they can do your job better than you, watching certain players make destructive decisions.

Distinctions: coaches make sure you don’t hold it against a player whose parents are critical of you: frequently player put into middle of situation. Rarely does HC have a day where someone isn’t complaining about something you do: put on your armor, ride tall, & enjoy challenge.

Defense is hard. It requires moxie, guile, & a physical rawness that speaks to a player’s intentions: the basic stance, slide, holding hands out or up not natural while you are yelling commands. Defense hurts & the ultimate truth teller: faking D gets you nowhere.

Single greatest impediment to an elite practice? Coaches interrupt, over talk, get in the way of practice flow. Keep working on economy of words & when to teach. Being a master teacher requires patience, pregnant pauses, thoughtful praise/correction timing, & emotional control.

Rebounding. Boxing out. Difficult, dirty job, for everybody=team connected to each other, one forgets or doesn't we all fail. Thus, ASAP in every practice plan get to it early & often. Late in practice, demand & drill, winners & losers. Pain in rump but a must, must, must!

If you asked me? What coaching advice helped you the most? Create your own circle of older coaches: we need "observers", wise old owls that can guide us. Also, include young coaches that can keep you up to speed w/ time's current of change: a well thought out balance of both.

HC assignment. Before season begins, write down your vision for each player by end of year. Now hand it to player, he/she gets to be your editor, adding or subtracting. HC rewrites, role declaration included, meet again before season, discuss, go forward.

Day of NIL & Transfer Portal: Warren Buffet, "Be fearful when others are greedy & greedy when others are fearful". Point: mid & lower Div. 1 stay calm, pick character over talent, & develop togetherness. Down deep, big boys fear teams w/ continuity, shooters, & that play w/ pass.

Key lesson here is that Dog Days or not changing up practice, with spliced in "joy moments" & unpredictables in the name of fun very important. The power word here is "fresh", mental freshness & team morale sooo important.

The Denver Nuggets played dodgeball today at practice, players vs staff/coaches. Two games, they split 1-1. Coach Malone said he felt “targeted” 😂

3 things that DEFINES every team: 1) How HARD YOU COMPETE. 2) How HARD YOU COMPETE when things go bad. 3) How HARD YOU COMPETE on defense.
