I take this picture every single year…
This is at noon.
On a weekday.
For a Quarterfinal.
Of a high school game.
…and there are 18,000 people packed into the building.

A scene I post pictures of every year:
This is at one o’clock in the afternoon…
…on a Thursday - a weekday…
…for a quarterfinal - not championship…
…of a high school sporting event.
And **18,000** people are packed in to watch.
Hockey hits differently up here, folks.
He’d insist the attention tonight be on the Edina & Chanhassen players competing for a championship…
…but part of tonight just has to be saluting
@NanneLou
calling his last game, closing out 60 years broadcasting the State Hockey Tourney.
The State of Hockey thanks you, Lou.
It’s my annual tweet, modified.
This is a high school sporting event.
Usually the pic is at the daytime quarterfinal Thursday, but I forgot.
That quarterfinal’s attendance was 19,765.
The Friday semifinal pictured here had 20,956.
This is the State of Hockey.
#TheTourney24
I've watched a lot of hockey.
I mean... a lot.
NHL, college, rec league, high school, Olympics... you name it.
This is one of the best games I've ever seen at any level.
Alex Ovechkin just walked out to the visiting team’s bench during the
#MnWild
skate to greet his former coach Bruce Boudreau.
Boudreau shouted to him: “I thought you were going to the Olympics!”
LARGE upset right there, folks.
Appalachian State (remember them from 15 years back?) just kayoed Jimbo Fisher and
#6
Texas A&M 17-14 in College Station.
Time of possession was 41:30-18:30 favoring App State (h/t
@mastertes
) ... which is insane.
Wasn’t on the field after the game today, but found myself in the right place at the right time to record this before the game.
Heck of an experience out there today.
This is incredible.
Per
@fbgchase
, the Buffalo Bills just dropped the first ever "perfect game" by an NFL offense.
That's...
•0 punts
•0 FG
•0 turnovers (including failed 4th downs)
Hadn't ever been done. Not just in the playoffs. At all. EVER.
No team in NFL history has ever gone an entire game without punting, kicking a field goal, or turning the ball over.
Buffalo hasn't done any of those things through 58 minutes.
Hawaii's 51yd FG at the gun beats Colo St, who finish 5-7.
With that, college football's regular season ends w/ *81* 6-win teams.
41 bowl games = *82* spots.
Therefore, the 5-7 team w/ the highest Academic Progress Rating fills the lone vacancy.
That team is
@GopherFootball
.
Standing by the hallway to the Wolves locker room…
Pat Bev went by breathing so hard I thought he might hyperventilate
Edwards was smiling saying, “When the lights come on, I show up”
Towns was visibly emotional.
Russell was saying, “We’re right where we’re supposed to be.”
Never ceases to amaze when players who were asked... begged, even... to be leaders on a team depart that team, then decry a lack of leadership on their former team.
Andrew Wiggins: "We lost a lot in Minnesota. So coming here, being part of a winning culture, it's different. Losing's never fun. Being here, you can tell by everyone's attitude, approach, everything that's everywhere, they're winners. That's something I've wanted to be."
Sean Payton went into the Saints locker room with the Lombardi trophy on top of $225k in cash (Saints’ players SB bonus) and said “Y’all want this? Win 3 f--king games," per
@JonDeTrinis
Per a source w/ knowledge of the situation, former
#Timberwolves
player & 13-year NBA vet Ricky Davis is expected to be announced as the new boys basketball coach at Minneapolis North (
@NPolarHoops
).
He'd succeed legendary coach Larry McKenzie, who retired last month.
KJ Osborn hit the ground with :41 left.
Vikings had 1st/10 at the 19 with a timeout.
Sure, an NFL kicker should be solid from 37... but why on earth would you not try to gain a few more yards?
That's awful end-of-game management.
Paige Bueckers, classy as ever:
"Everybody can make a big deal of that one play, but one single play doesn't decide a basketball game."
"I could have done a better job so the game wasn't left up to chance, left up to one call."
That's the perfect way to handle that question.
Talked to MN hockey legend John Mayasich after the game.
He was here, watching as his Tourney record of 7 goals was threatened.
“I almost got ‘Bumped’!” he said.
He and
@PLboyshockey
’s
@Alexbump14
are 2 of 3 ever w/ 5 or more goals in a championship bracket game

@TheTrentCrimm
Slow cuts at Heathrow. Ted gets off a plane with Michelle and Henry. They walk the concourse, get luggage from bag check, hail a cab, head to Richmond.
...but when we get there, we find they're visiting for the first match of the Lady Greyhounds run by Keeley, coached by Nate.
She’s home.
@HopkinsRoyals
legend &

We’ll have more w/ Paige and today’s event on

& later tonight.

Hi there. On New Year's Eve, the final eastbound green line train departs Target Field at 11:23 PM and the final westbound green line train departs Union Depot at 11:17 PM. ~BG
Hearing
@usbankstadium
is lit purple and gold tonight.
Ordinarily, wouldn't be notable as home of the Vikings.. but they've also put this picture on the big screen facing the Plaza.
If you've been in the Minnesota media anytime over the last, what, eight decades... you have a Sid Hartman story.
Nobody told more stories than Sid himself.
RIP to a true icon.
Hey
@NHL
... get this out of the game, please.
Simple fix - use the rule lacrosse has had forever. Gotta have hands together on the stick to use them to push.
If they're spread out? Penalty.
This is a big part of what wrecked Zach Parise's back and took years off his career.
Jalen Suggs was already a Minnesota high school basketball legend.
Now? He's forever in NCAA Tournament lore.
Holy buckets, what a shot.
Here's to you,
@JalenSuggs2020
. My word.
Gustavus wins the NCAA D-III Womens Hockey Championship 2-1 over Amherst in 3OT.
They’re the first western school to win the D3 womens title.
Congrats,
@GustiesWHockey
! Heck of a way to win a program’s first national title.
Wild scene at the about-to-tipoff

game in DC.
~20,000 at the game, which will be followed by a watch party for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
WNBA attendance record is 20,647 - set in DC, I believe. Likely will be broken today.
Mike Zimmer on players out due to protocol, "I can't talk anymore about that because of new protocols."
"It's why people should get vaccinated"
"Something like this happens the day before a game with a chance to get into the playoffs?"
"Some people don't understand, I guess."
A friendly reminder as local bars & restaurants continue to struggle amid the pandemic.
January is always the slowest month for food service.
If you're not comfortable dining in a local spot, do a takeout order or two.
The industry is hurting. Help 'em keep people employed.
In their first MIAC football game since they being forced out of the conference... St Thomas beats Hamline 74-14.
This is going to be a revenge tour on par with Kill Bill, True Grit and Carrie.
Many of the kids who were at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012 are students at Newtown High School right now.
I imagine at least a few are on the football team.
Today is seven years *to the day* since the shootings.
For those who lost the signal on the broadcast... here were the' first pitches' Joe Mauer's kids threw to conclude the
#MnTwins
Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony...
This is the kind of game that makes you feel the
#MnWild
should never, ever trade Kevin Fiala.
...or the kind of game that makes you feel his trade value can never be higher.
If you're a H.S. athlete or parent... consider taking a moment to thank your Athletic Director.
I don't think people have any idea how many plates they've had to keep spinning this fall to get/keep kids playing amid Covid protocols, schedule shifts, insane weather, etc..
Stat I tripped over researching today...
#Vikings
DE Danielle Hunter ranks 16th in the NFL in sacks over the last 3 seasons despite starting just 17 games. Nearly everybody else in the top 20 has 40+ starts.
...Evason asked if he'd rein Foligno in:
"Rein what in? The penalties aren't penalties that he's got. So what do you rein in? If Marcus Foligno skates around, doesn't bump into anybody, is he going to be effective? No."
"He's gonna play hockey how it's supposed to be played."
This could be any of us, anywhere.
A parade, a school, a concert, a mall. Anywhere.
A normal day, then… this.
The sooner we stop being glad it isn’t us & start realizing it *could* be us, the sooner something gets done by those empowered to do so.
Gotta stop looking away.
Gutted to hear the news
@FSNtomhanneman
has passed away.
The man had neither a mean word nor complaint about anyone or anything.
A true gentleman.
The entire Minnesota sports community will miss you, Tom.
Happy for the
#Gophers
players, coaches, program, alumni and fans.
The long, statewide nightmare is over.
(also, the extra month of practice is a huge asset for a team this young)
There was a "daddy's money" chant in here a moment ago.
Honestly no way to discern who it was, nor to whom it was directed considering the four squads we have in here tonight.
Quite a 3-yr run for MN HS hoops:
2022
2: Chet Holmgren, Minn Acad
23: David Roddy, Breck
48: Kendall Brown, E Ridge
2021
5: Jalen Suggs, Minn Acad
58: Jericho Sims, Cristo Rey
2020
22: Zeke Nnaji, Hopkins
31: Tyrell Terry, DLS
33: Daniel Oturu, CDH
41: Tre Jones, Apple Valley
That’s…. an interesting sequence of events.
Defenseless receiver gets knocked out. They review for targeting. End up calling it a fumble?
Nice work, football.
Holy hell.
The whole reason the platform works is it’s always there.
Have some time on the bus? Scroll Twitter.
In bed before sleep? Scroll Twitter.
Have ten minutes before a meeting? Scroll Twitter.
It’s not appointment viewing.
This is an incredibly stupid way to devalue the service.
And with the end of tonight's sportscast, I mark the end of my *11th* year at
@KSTP
.
Excited to see what year 12 brings... hopefully, all of us are back in stadiums and arenas very, very soon.
Thanks to followers here and everybody who tunes into
@KSTPSports
.
I appreciate you!
Jon Bell’s smile after the fall was amazing.
Handled it perfectly.
Kid’s gonna make it in life. You fall? Get back up and smile.
...also, just became a Tourney legend.
Ant to
@notthefakeSVP
: “I just want to kill everything in front of me.”
Also says he doesn’t know how this is supposed to feel because he’s been knocked out in the first round twice.
22 years old, and the kid is an absolute pro.
Re: promotion/relegation
His team stands third from last. Yet they won a game today that elicited *this* much emotion.
Here? They’d be tanking for a better draft pick and nobody would care.
(I love Rog, btw)
As expected…
@GopherHockey
is the overall
#1
seed for the NCAA Tourney.
They’re the top seed in Fargo where they open against Canisius Thursday 8p CT
The other game in Fargo is St Cloud State against Minnesota State - 4p CT.
Hate that 3 MN teams are all in the same region.
I could not disagree with this more. This confuses journalism with advertising.
I freely admit home teams winning is good for the local news business... it also makes our job easier.
But it's absolutely not our job to help make it happen or provide hype when it doesn't.
@ChrisLongKSTP
Sports journalism is not the same as political journalism. It really should be about promoting the home team and getting more butts in the seats. More butts in the seats equals more interest in the team which equals more newspapers sold/eyes on screens - It’s a business remember.
