Why did we ever think all written work must be marked? Writing, in all its forms, is practice. You don’t have to assess practice. You just have to do it. I don’t ‘assess’ my daughter’s violin practice. I just want her to do it. So she gets better. My god I hope she gets better.
In a moment of madness today I asked my daughters to circle what they would like for Christmas in the Tesco gift guide.
I’ve just looked through it. 🤦🏻♀️
A confessional little thread..
The second half of the Autumn term is always the time when I contemplate giving it all up and opening a tea shop instead 😊
Anyone else feel this way?

My first time at a celebration assembly today. It was beautiful.
#ProudMum
OMG Primary school teachers & TAs are INCREDIBLE. Seriously impressive.
Primary Heads should be running the country.. not even joking. They’d sort us all out.
I reached peak headteacher today when I found the child’s upper AND lower braces at the bottom of a bin full of dinner scraps (chicken and beans). The kids cheered. Don’t remember this being on the job description.😂
Sending huge love and respect to all those in Primary this weekend. Particularly to the Primary HTs who have been faced with impossible decisions. I think you’re all amazing.
🧵
If you haven’t read Graham Nuthall’s The Hidden Lives of Learners, I would highly recommend it. It’s solid gold. If you have read it, read it again. It’s even better a second/third time.
Here is a summary of a few of his findings in 9 tweets👇
My 10 year old tells me daily I’m the most unreasonable mum in the whole world because ALL her friends have phones & she’s feeling really isolated and left out. Surely I’m not the only one who thinks 10 is too young for a phone? What age is right? (I tell her not ‘til she’s 18🤣)
Join me in giving a huge thank you to the DSLs who are on duty all the way through the holidays and who drop everything to attend emergency strategy meetings to ensure children who are at risk are kept safe. 💛
Gosh. Been nominated by
@educationgovuk
to attend HRH King Charles’ Royal Garden Party as mark of thanks for my services to education. Thank you SO much DfE! How very lovely. Totally unexpected. Feeling very proud and happy 😊 I LOVE a good garden party! 🌷

My 6 year old gave me these instructions for life:
- help other people if they need you.
- respect other people.
- make sure people are safe.
- most special-est one, take care of yourself.

First half term as a Headteacher done.
Here’s what I know:
✅ The community matters more than anything.
✅ Nothing is possible without dedicated & happy teachers and support staff who feel valued.
✅ Corby kids are amazing
✅ Sports day in October is a crazy idea.
Wow, it’s not an exaggeration. The people in the North are so friendly. Been here one day and it’s so striking. Every single person we’ve interacted with so far has been an absolute delight. I love it.

, I want to share a little story of a child of faith. Hazel.
Hazel is 8. She is our youngest daughter. We are not a religious family. Hazel has, since she began to talk, been absolutely certain of the existence of God.

Tomorrow I graduate from Cambridge. My dad will be watching. He took me there on a day trip when I was 10. From that day onwards it was my dream. 31 years later. I did it! Not bad for a kid from Corby.
Ridiculously excited about our Year 10s having a star to stand on to keep them 2m apart as they arrive next week. Our students ARE bright stars and we can’t wait to see them! ⭐️
This is deeply offensive to a profession which is currently doing all it can, in massively challenging circumstances, to deliver online lessons, on-site care and constant welfare support.
I’ll look forward to sharing feedback from our Ofsted visit when I can, but in the meantime... the process was highly respectful, sensitive of context/workload, and developmental. I’ve never been clearer about we’ve achieved and what more we need to do. Feeling very motivated. 👍
Her faith is nurtured by
@SchoolCranford
& by her nanna
@CooperCeclarke8
. Whether Hazel continues to have faith & believe she is an Angel sent from God, time will tell.
In the meantime, we feel truly blessed to have such a joyous child in our life.

An important piece of advice that a leader once gave me:
‘Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t being done.’
Helped me shape my beliefs on trusting teams, leaders and teachers. Assume the best in people.
The speech the Head gives to staff at the start of the year... I’ve been planning my own version of that speech for years. Now I’m finally planning it FOR REAL! *gulp*
I’ve heard so many of those speeches - some good, some terrible. What have been the best/worst you’ve heard?
A thread of recommended apologies for Lord Adonis.
You should apologise for making sweeping generalisations that show a deep lack of respect for a profession you should know better. 1/
A HUGE shout out to all the members of SLT/staff who are responsible for sorting cover & supply in school. I see you. You currently have the toughest gig. Thank you.
What I know, in my bones, is that I’m in the right school. I had an overwhelming feeling of love and pride today. No matter how hard it is, I’m in it for the long haul. I just love my kids, my staff, my community. Corby... it’s the best place with the best people.

On leadership team briefings..
At our school, the leadership team have a daily briefing at 7.50am. It’s deliberately operational, but it’s impact goes far beyond logistics.

Ofsted visit today was a very positive experience. Very respectful, genuinely interested and highly professional HMIs. Also very human. Definitely nothing to fear. It was a great opportunity for us to articulate what our staff and students have achieved since March.
Official confirmation today that
@lodgeparkacad
has a waiting list. An actual waiting list! 🥳 For those of you who know, you will understand why this is a big deal and the huge difference it will make. 😊
Some reflections on the system for awarding grades this year.
▪️Highly imperfect system, but it’s what we’ve got. Let’s be pragmatic and positive.
▪️Try not to be so upset by the imperfection that you start thinking exams are perfect; they are preferable, not perfect.

I was thinking... our young people might just be - as a result of this pandemic - the most emotionally resilient, self-aware, compassionate, empathetic and politically engaged generation we’ve ever known. It’s what I’m seeing in the young people I’m privileged to know.
I am thrilled to announce that I will be joining the
@DRETnews
family as Principal of Lodge Park Academy in Corby, Northants - my home town.
So happy to be working with
@bobsloan79
and
@educurious2015
on our academy transformation! Feels like the most important job in the world.
Advice for trainees looking for a teaching post for September. Don’t be tempted to join an agency. No matter what they say or what they offer you. Don’t do it. Schools need you. Apply directly.
Hazel (yr 5): Mum, I love SATS
Me: You’re not doing SATs
Hazel: Yeah but yr 6 did so well that they got extra playtime and the teachers completely forgot we were there and let us play too!
I’m excited by our big push on reading
@lodgeparkacad
for the Summer term. Building on the groundwork we’ve put in place for 2 years now, we’re putting reading FRONT & CENTRE 🤩
Here’s how👇
(warning: long thread, probs should have done a blog 😂)
Startling dissonance today between what I know our school to be and how it’s perceived by others. Please don’t make assumptions about schools based on their Ofsted category - ask, listen, visit, learn, know.
The greatest of role models. The Queen understood that her life was entirely in the public gaze, and took the responsibility of that very seriously. That truly is service. To act in the interests of others at all times, even in times of great personal grief.
Tonight I re-watched episode 1 of season 1 of Game Of Thrones. This demonstrates how much of a strategic planner I am. Even without a release date, I will re-watch every episode before season 8 begins. The kids have no clean uniform for tomorrow morning, but winter is coming.
Did my staff briefing from home today and now I’m getting stick from my senior team for having a white board in my house. Surely I’m not the only one? Surely? Don’t you all have whiteboards in your house?
A short story👇
In the closing weeks of last term,
@bobsloan79
& I were really pleased to welcome
@Ofstednews
to
@lodgeparkacad
for our much delayed section 8 inspection. Despite a pandemic the school is transformed & we wanted the improvement validated for our community.

Love this. Very relevant for young people too. Don’t make sweeping judgements of them based on misjudgments they make. We’re all imperfect, complex, emotional human beings. Fresh starts every time. Don’t hold grudges.
As a teacher, when you make this call, you never do it lightly. You know it’s risky, but you also know the risk of not making it is greater. And you KNOW it is right. This thread is testament to the rightness of that call. So keep making it. Keep making it.

Went to do a job in Baildon this morning, and turned into one truly emotional roller coaster
Pulls up, bloke about 70 greets us, I look and think I recognise you, he speaks and I know the voice, but just can't place it at all
He wants observatory he is building waterproofed 1/?
Overheard at dinner..
Hazel (yr4): 😃I know SO much about History because of my teacher.
Eleanor (yr8): 🙄 Meh. You don’t. Your teacher didn’t *specialise* in History. My History teacher is a *specialist*
Hazel: 😡 Yeah.. well, my teacher specialises in being a TEACHER!
😂
You need and want the break and you’re grateful for it, but the anxiety and the pressure and the expectation for tomorrow morning is huge. Regardless of role. Got to dig deep. Got to click into role. Not always easy. But.. we’re all in it. Let’s go. We’ve got this.
@tes
In that case, I’m delighted to lead a Special Measures school where I most certainly will not be asking my teachers to do this. Actually I think that makes us... outstanding 😁 Our staff are precious, their well-being is paramount and teachers who are happy are better teachers.
‘If we tell students they have been irrevocably damaged by their lockdown absence, they will feel, most probably, irrevocably damaged’ - so let’s not do that! Let’s be relentlessly positive! Brill from
@johntomsett
who writes what I think 😁
I shouldn’t be surprised because it happens every day, but I’ve just walked around the whole school & feel so moved seeing all students in all classrooms silently reading. I’m so appreciative of the school culture that the staff here create daily through their high expectations.
Having covid is rubbish but today my daughter said she’d cheer me up by making me a cake.
How lovely, I thought, picturing a light yet moist Victoria Sponge with a fresh cream and strawberry filling.
😳
Talking about possible secondary schools with my daughter today. I asked her what she would look for in a school. Here is her list:
1. Kindness
2. No rubbish
3. Good teachers
4. Good children
5. Good learning
6. Tidy classrooms
Fair enough.
#kidsknowbest
My daughter’s teacher hand painted one of these for each child in her class. Each one is decorated with something the child loves.
Primary school teachers are utterly awesome.
#humbled
And so, if you’re feeling like it’s all too much & you start looking at how much tea shops cost..
Allow your feelings space, but don’t put them in charge. And talk to someone.
Recognise that everything that seems tough now, will seem less so in future.
We’ve got this ❤️

On my way to get jabbed I had a flat tyre so pulled over. Caretaker picked me up, took me to get jab, then back to my car and changed my tyre. 3.10pm & the kids from
@lodgeparkacad
walked past: are you okay Miss? Can we help; & they thanked the caretaker for looking after me. 😍
Just back from a walk with Hazel (7).
Hazel: It was really cold outside today.
Me: Well, you should have zipped your coat up.
Hazel: I’ll choose my own path in life thanks.
🤣
Me: As agreed, it’s now time for you to go upstairs and tidy your room. No arguments. Off you go.
*Daughter stomps upstairs*
Her: Alexa, play IT’S A HARD KNOCK LIFE, VOLUME TEN.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
✅ You can’t be afraid to say you’re wrong and you’re sorry.
✅ Being happy, positive and courteous makes a difference to the people around you.
And finally:
✅ I’m more determined than ever. ✅ I’m glad it’s half term.
For all that is wrong with CAGs, I don’t miss the stress of not knowing what results days will bring. That is stress like nothing else. And it’s nice not caring about headline results or performance tables. The only headlines are the students and their achievements. I like that.
The opposite! This is exactly what an AHT in charge of T&L should be doing. Role modelling humility & continued learning. Showing that we improve when we watch & reflect.. when we are open to feedback.. when ego has no role. Thank you

THREAD. Absolutely agree with
@RealGeoffBarton
here. Those centres who over-inflated grades? Deal with them. It will be obvious who they are. Don’t let the vast majority lose out because of the behaviour of a few. 1/9
Every other country that performs highly in education trusts its teachers -
@RealGeoffBarton
says that should have happened in England rather than create a system that has given a student predicted a C grade, a U. In the systems eyes she has failed an exam she couldn't even sit.
We had a TF trainee this week on placement. As she left she told me what a great week she’d had, how fantastic our culture is, how supportive our teachers are and how brilliantly behaved our kids are. This made me happy. Then she told me how surprised she was by all of this and..
That thing that some aren’t keen on but I’m really keen on because I want to show the world how incredible our staff and students are well it’s happening this week and I’m that excited I can’t punctuate but also I’m a bit gutted it won’t change our grade but hey ho bring it on 😊
Feeling so motivated. Would happily work 24 hours a day if I could! Buzzing about my new role and just can’t get enough of it at the moment (I know, I know - the calm before the storm!). Preparations for September are well underway. Bring it on!
#excited
Me: That’s it, Let’s not watch another episode. Need to get to bed.
Next episode starts in 10, 9, 8...
Me: No! Quick, turn it off! Where’s the remote?
4, 3, 2...
Me: Okay just one more.
So infuriatingly effective. 🙄
Our Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning
@DanceMarts
, shared something with me this week that shows how brilliant she is. She was embarrassed to tell me, thinking that it revealed a flaw. It’s the opposite.
She told me this..
I’m reflecting tonight on how angry and upset I felt earlier. I think, in the end, only kindness matters. And you never ever know what a person is going through. I need to remember not to judge even when judgement is so easy to pass. Life is too short and fragile.
This evening’s mission has been to finish all the Christmas chocolate before term starts tomorrow. I’m nearly there. Just two Galaxies and a Lindt bear to go. I can do this.
I just found a huge Toblerone in the back of the cupboard. Not only is this a wonderful thing, it is also the SECOND time this has happened to me in my life. How is it possible not to know you have a huge Toblerone in your house, twice? I need to get a grip.
Inspired by reading about Coco Chanel, my daughter decided to have all her hair cut off. She doesn’t want to conform to a certain ‘look’. She also decided to donate her hair to a charity that makes free real-hair wigs for very poorly children.
Feeling proud.

Final school week of the most incredible, most frustrating, most joyful, most infuriating, most satisfying, most despairing, most exciting, most manic, most awe-inspiring, most heartbreaking, most amazing year of my career to date. 😅
#neverboring
…how anxious she was the week before because of the ‘things’ people had told her about our school. This made me sad.
Wish people wouldn’t just lazily repeat outdated views. Visit us instead. Come and see.
THREAD: Found my grandmother’s O Level exam papers from 1954.
(kids got to keep their papers? 😮)
They’re fascinating.
Do we demand more or less of kids today?
What do the papers tell us about the curriculum in 1954?
Could you answer the questions?

Supply teacher told me at the end of the day today that
@lodgeparkacad
is totally transformed and he’d had a brilliant day. He said our students were the best behaved and most polite he’d encountered.

Day 2
@lodgeparkacad
Loving being the phone-answering, email-responding, query-resolving, food-distributing, letter-franking, tech-advising (yes really) voice of Lodge Park Academy.
I love being a Headteacher but by God I’d make a brilliant receptionist.
And therefore, you should apologise because ordinary people like me, saw a tweet from a person with power and privilege like you, misrepresent their profession with a dismissiveness and ignorance that ignores the exceptional and brilliant work schools do every single day. 14/14
Watched Nativity! last night. Yes, I’m tired. Yes, I’d had a few mulled wines. Which is probably why I just could not stop crying / laughing. What a lovely and funny film. And those kids! My goodness. Brilliant acting.
Fab film? Or was I bit tipsy and over emotional? 😂
Can anyone tell me what spaced-practice in teaching is? It’s a term I’ve only just heard today and I’m wondering what it is. Is it a covid thing? Space teachers out so we don’t spread the virus? That’ll be it, I bet.
✅ You can do the hard stuff and still be a nice person.
✅ There are loads of traps to fall into so you need to keep being reflective.
✅ If you think you’re working hard, it’s nothing compared to the teacher on 22/25 lessons a week.
