Mary Peltola is set to become the first Alaska Native to represent Alaska in Congress. She would serve for the next four months, to fill what's left of Don Young's term. In official returns, she narrowly defeated Sarah Palin in the state's first ranked choice voting election.

Alaska's vote count is complete. Gov. Mike Dunleavy finished above 50%, making a ranked choice sorting unnecessary. After the count is certified, he will be the first Alaska governor to be reelected since Tony Knowles in 1998. The final vote count was 266,573. #akleg #akgov

We’ve gotten questions about where the Alaska Beacon’s name came from. Most of the U.S.’s coastline is in Alaska, and since 1902, Alaska’s lighthouses beacons have helped Alaskans navigate. We’d also like to be a source people can turn to in stormy times. #akleg

Of those who preferred Nick Begich to either of the others, 27,042 had Sarah Palin as their next preference, 15,445 had Mary Peltola and 11,222 had their ballots exhausted. This wasn't enough for Palin to overcome the 16,479-vote lead that Peltola had in first-preference voters.
